Nieuwsbrief #39 Phaedra CD in Flanders' Fields Vol. 88 # 92088 Newsletter | Nieuwsbrief #39 Phaedra CD In Flanders’ Fields Vol. 88 # 92088 Code: 5412327920889 The Core of all Things: Romantic Art Songs by De kern van alle dingen: Romantische kunstliederen van Edgar Tinel | Peter Benoit | Gustave Huberti | Arthur Verhoeven | Arthur Meulemans | Robert Holl ROBERT HOLL, bass JOZEF DE BEENHOUWER, piano This CD offers the listener a short anthology of the Flemish romantic art song. In his Grave Songs, Edgar Tinel shows his mastery of the macabre, ghostlike ‘Legendenton’ (Schumann’s term) in conjuring up fantastic romantic visions. The two songs by the young Peter Benoit recorded her belong to the avant-garde of his time. Later he was to devote himself exclusively to pursuing his social ideals: the cultural edification of the Flemish people and the foundation of the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp. Gustave Huberti was an ardent supporter of Benoit’s ideals, but at same time an admirer of German art song. As far as we know, this is the first time he appears on a published recording. Arthur Verhoeven studied at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp with LodewiJk Mortelmans, August de Boeck, Paul Gilson and others, and a prolific composer, mainly between the two world wars. At the time his song cycles set to texts by Jozef Simons (1888–1948) earned him quite a name. He has over two hundred songs to his name, a number of them set to texts by the Dutch poet Hélène Swarth (1859–1941). Arthur Meulemans was Edgar Tinel’s favorite pupil. He set the sensitive and atmospheric song recorded her to a poem by Guido Gezelle (1830–1899) early in his career. Robert Holl, besides being a renowned singer, is also a composer of art song “par coeur” (in Schönberg’s sense, of ‘one who must compose’). He strives “to adequately render the quintessence of the poet”. In his opinion, the poet and novelist Felix Timmermans (1886–1947) is “the soul of Flanders”. One reason for choosing The Core of All Things, the title of Holl’s song set to Timmermans’s wondrous poem, as the title of this entire CD. The Dutch bass Robert Holl is a renowned singer of song and opera, who has appeared on the major stages in the world. This is Jozef de Beenhouwer’s 19th Phaedra CD. He is an internationally recognized interpreter of Schumann and Brahms as well as a famous accompanist of art songs. He gave me an original exemplar of Carl Relnecke's edition of the concerto, and provided me with photocopies of Schumann's autograph manuscript, the wind parts from the first printed edition, and Clara Schumann's "Instructive edition." Mr. Frager. who was the first to publish information on the textual content of the autograph manuscript, made It possible for me to use his discoveries as a foundation for further research. I am deeply grateful to him for giving me this opportunity. I express sincere appreciation to my adviser Dr. Lois Rosow for her patience, understanding, guidance, and insight throughout the research.

  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.

PB 1 WWW.PHAEDRACD.COM · 1992 - 2012 Phaedra’s Whys and Wherefores !is catalog simultaneously lists and celebrates the achievements of Phaedra in the twenty years of its existence. At "rst blush publishing just over one hundred CDs in twenty years time may not look impressive. But it is very impressive, as you will see once you know the whys and wherefores of Phaedra. It is the purpose of this introduction to tell you about them. In spite of the .com extension in the URL of its website (www.phaedracd.com), Phaedra is not a commercial undertaking. It is part of a non-pro"t organization, Klassieke Concerten vzw. It was started by one man, and it still is almost entirely the work of one man. He has no sta#, not even a part-time secretary. His o$ce is a room in his house; his storage space, another room. He does everything himself. He decides which music Phaedra will publish, often searching out totally unknown works, including quite a few that are available only as manuscripts. He chooses the performers, in consultation with the composers if these are still alive. He takes care of the logistics of the recording sessions, and of the production process, of the covers and booklets as well as of the CDs proper. He is in charge of all publicity and of marketing Phaedra. It is impossible to justly evaluate the achievements of Phaedra without knowing it is a one-man operation. Like most Flemish non-pro"t organizations, it is also a shoestring operation.
