Publications du Centre Pierre Paris GRANDS DOMAINES ET PETITES PROPRIÉTÉS DANS LE PÉLOPONNÈSE SOUS L'EMPIRE* Abstract. — Latifundia system was not développée in Greece and particularly in the Péloponnèse. On the contrary the impression left by the sources is that there was considerable room for large private holdings. The Empire encouraged concentration of land by favouring cities' well-to-do bourgeoisie of landowners. In addition literary and epigraphical evidence attests the parallel existence of small free cultivators and herders. The picture of economic depression, population loss and site abandonment, given by ancient sources, from the late hellenistic period onwards, is generally confirmed by modern archaeological research. At that time infertile and mountainous land was abandoned or devoted to herding (e.g. Arcadia) which acquired greater importance; agriculture was practiced in the more fertile areas and especially near the coastal urban centres. The villa system was particularly developped in areas situated in the proximity of some important towns, consuming centres of rural products of any kind and at the same time important regional markets. In spite of the existence of a schematic apportionment of zones of special rural and economic activities, the countryside economy remained diversified according to the relief, the soil's nature, the tradition and the social practices. Criterion (ii): The Mycenaean civilisation, as exemplified by Mycenae and Tiryns, had a profound effect on the development of classical Greek architecture and urban design, and consequently also on contemporary cultural forms. Criterion (iii) and (iv): Mycenae and Tiryns represent the apogee of the Mycenaean civilization, which laid the foundations for the evolution of later European cultures. Criterion (vi): Mycenae and Tiryns are indissolubly linked with the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, the influence of which upon European literature and the arts has been profound for more than three millennia. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS The Archaeological Sites of Mycenae and Tiryns are imposing ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilisation which dominated the eastern Mediterranean world in the 15th to 12th centuries BC and which played a vital role in the development of the culture of classical Greece. These two cities are indissolubly linked to the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, which have influenced European art and literature for more than three millennia. -

Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 2, Issue 4 – Pages 243-254 Applying Current Methods in Documentary Linguistics in the Documentation of Endangered Languages: A Case Study on Fieldwork in Arvanitic By Efrosini Kritikos Arvanitic is a language of Greece also called Arberichte or Arvanitika. UNESCO has classified Arvanitic as a “severely endangered language” in Greece, which is in need of documentation as it is being used by the last generation of speakers. In the case of Arvanitic in Greece, it appears more weight has been given to the process of description at the expense of documentation proper. This paper will discuss how current methods in documentary linguistics are being applied in its documentation. It will report on a field study being carried out with the last native speakers in the community of Zarakas, Laconia, Greece. The aim of the fieldwork being carried out is to create a reliable, representative, comprehensive and lasting record of the language in this specific community, in light of new developments in information, communication and media technology which can aid not only its documentation but also its archiving, processing, preservation as well as its accessibility. It places importance on collaboration with the local native speakers as well as ethics involving the speakers’ needs and rights of privacy and ownership, while at the same time giving something back to the community. Its administrative capital is Sparta. The word laconic is derived from the name of the region by analogy—to speak in a concise way, as the Spartans were reputed by the Athenians to do. Geography Eurotas (river) outside the city of Sparti. Laconia is bordered by Messenia to the west and Arcadia to the north and is surrounded by the Myrtoan Sea to the east and by the Laconian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It encompasses Cape Malea and Cape Tainaron and a large part of the Mani Peninsula. The islands of Kythira and Antikythera lie to the south, but they administratively belong to the Attica regional unit of islands. The island, Elafonisos, situated between the Laconian mainland and Kythira, is part of Laconia. The Evrotas is the longest river in the prefecture. The valley of the Evrotas is predominantly an agricultural region that contains many citrus groves, olive groves, and pasture lands. It is the location of the largest orange production in the Peloponnese and probably in all of Greece. -
