International Conference on “DemetriosGalanos and His Legacy: Report Indo-Greek scholarship 1790-2018″ Sudhir Lal Project Director, Bharat Vidya Prayojana

he Bharat Vidya Prayojana of the Indira TGandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) organized an International Conference on “DemetriosGalanos and His Legacy: Indo-Greek scholarship 1790-2018” from 3rd Feb-10th Feb. 2018 in two editions; the first one at Delhi and the second at Varanasi. The conference was supported by the Embassy of Greece, New Delhi, the International Center (IIC), Delhi, the Bharat Adhyayan Kendra of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Indo-Hellenic Friendship League, New Delhi. The conference was aimed at examining the age-old academic and cultural exchanges between India and Greece, with DemetriosGalanos (born 1760–1833), the Athenian; at the centre-stage of this rich exchange; as he had spent the final forty Prof. Bharat Gupt, H. E. Panos Kalogeropoulos, Prof. Satyavrat Shastri and years of his life at Varanasi, translating Sanskrit texts Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi at inaugural like the Srimadbhagvadgita, the BhagavatPurana etc., from Sanskrit to Greek. A 9000 word trilingual dictionary (Sanskrit-English-Greek) is also one of the highpoints of his literary achievements. Prof. Bharat Gupt presented a very scholarly paper on Greek / Indo- European dramatic traditions. Some of the employees also planted trees around the campus. A poster competition was also organised in which everyone was invited to create a poster highlighting the message of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. On 24th April, a film screening, ‘Swachhta Devatva ek Samaan’ was hosted for school children. The film highlights the conditions of pious places of Tree plantation by S/S Vinod Rawat, Satyavrat Tripathi, Dinesh Sharma, Suresh and Bhagat India which include, ‘Ghats’ of Varanasi; ‘Swarn Mandir’ of Amritsar; ‘Ajmer Sharif Dargah’ and Venkateswara Temple of Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh. It points out how Indian citizens leave no stone unturned to spread filth around religious places which otherwise they consider to be pious. It also cites Tirumala temple as an example which should be adopted by all other religious places of India; it uses a unique technology to dispose off its waste and sewerage.
