The strengthening of the international development agenda has taken place against a background of an accelerated globalisation process, a rise in international terrorism and conflicts in the poorest countries, increased migratory flows and a rise in illicit trafficking and LOUIS MICHEL global environmental threats. Geography Part Two: How and Why is the Territory Developing Chapter 5: Development of Overseas French Territory Key ideas French overseas territory is spread around all the continents and oceans. This means that France has the second largest exclusive economic zone in the world after the USA. An exclusive economic zone (EEZ) is the maritime zone that extends 200 nautical miles (370km) from the coast of a territory and is reserved for the exclusive use of that territory. To promote the development of the island a project has been started to better connect the various towns and villages of the island. -

I argue that these colonial legacies reached a watershed moment in 1989 with the headscarf affair and further provoked violent and socially divisive events such as the 2005 riots and the 2015 terrorist attacks. Furthermore, I argue that the effects of France’s colonial past have created a psychological empire that is negatively affecting many of France’s youths of immigrant -

The World Factbook Australia-Oceania :: Wallis and Futuna (overseas collectivity of France) Introduction :: Wallis and Futuna Background: The Futuna island group was discovered by the Dutch in 1616 and Wallis by the British in 1767, but it was the French who declared a protectorate over the islands in 1842, and took official control of them between 1886 and 1888. Notably, Wallis and Futuna was the only French colony to side with the Vichy regime during World War II, a phase that ended in May of 1942 with the arrival of 2,000 American troops. In 1959, the inhabitants of the islands voted to become a French overseas territory and officially assumed this status in July 1961.
