Began in management while still a player at Coventry in November 1996 before ending his on-field career aged 40 to concentrate on coaching, keeping the club in the Premier League until 2001. • Although sacked early the following season, he was swiftly appointed by Southampton – whom he guided to eighth place in the English top flight in 2002/03 and the 2003 FA Cup final. Strachan stepped down in March 2004 to concentrate on media work. • Installed as Martin O'Neill's successor at Celtic in summer 2005, Strachan proceeded to win the Scottish Premier League in record time and also lifted the Scottish League Cup in his first campaign. In 2006/07, Celtic triumphed in both league and Scottish Cup, and got past the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time, falling in extra time to eventual winners AC Milan in the last 16. • Steered the Bhoys to the round of 16 again in 2007/08, this time succumbing to FC Barcelona, and a tremendous late surge took Celtic past Rangers FC to retain the Scottish championship. Stepped down at Celtic in 2009 after failing to defend the league crown. • After an unsuccessful year with Middlesbrough, was appointed national coach in January 2013, helping reinvigorate a Scotland team that went on to win home and away against Croatia in their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying pool, despite failing to make the cut for Brazil. David Wilson Date of birth: 22 February 1974 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Kilmarnock FC, Ardeer Thistle FC, Kilwinning Rangers FC, Worthing FC, Newport (IW) FC, Bashley FC, Troon FC, Saltcoats FC, Auchinleck Talbot FC Coaching career: Gibraltar (assistant coach), Gibraltar (caretaker) • Became one of Kilmarnock's first professional apprentices at the age of 16 and spent the next two years at the club. Gave up football professionally at 18 to join the forces while playing at semi-professional level, playing one youth international for Scotland in a 5-0 win in Northern Ireland. • After joining the Royal Navy in 1994, Wilson played for a host of non-league teams in England, winning the Southern League Eastern Division in 2001 with Newport (IW). • A marauding full-back adept at getting forward and overlapping midfielders, Wilson returned to Scotland in 2002, representing non-league outfits Troon, Saltcoats and Auchinleck Talbot. • Throughout his military career, he played 118 times for the Royal Navy senior side and represented the British Combined Services in six separate campaigns. • Wilson's first coaching experience came as an assistant to Allen Bula, who guided Gibraltar through their first games following admission to UEFA. Following Bula's dismissal on 8 March 2015, Wilson was named as interim boss. 6 Scotland - Gibraltar Sunday 29 March 2015 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Hampden Park, Glasgow Match officials Referee Mattias Gestranius (FIN) Assistant referees Jan-Peter Aravirta (FIN) , Mikko Alakare (FIN) Additional assistant referees Antti Munukka (FIN) , Dennis Antamo (FIN) Fourth official Jukka Honkanen (FIN) UEFA Delegate Bert Andersson (SWE) UEFA Referee observer Nuno Castro (POR) Referee UEFA EURO Name Date of birth UEFA matches matches Mattias Gestranius 07/06/1978 2 33 Mattias Gestranius Referee since: 1996 First division: 2006 FIFA badge: 2009 Tournaments: 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship Finals N/A UEFA European Championship matches featuring the two countries involved in this match No such matches refereed Other matches involving teams from either of the two countries involved in this match Stage Date Competition Home Away Result Venue reached 22/03/2009 U17 ELITE Italy Scotland 3-1 Stegersbach 28/07/2011 UEL 3QR Paksi FC Heart of Midlothian FC 1-1 Szekesfehervar 10/09/2012 U21 QR Austria Scotland 3-2 Altach 31/07/2014 UEL 3QR Saint Johnstone FC FC Spartak Trnava 1-2 Perth 7 Scotland - Gibraltar Sunday 29 March 2015 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Hampden Park, Glasgow Competition facts 8 Scotland - Gibraltar Sunday 29 March 2015 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Hampden Park, Glasgow Match-by-match lineups Scotland European Qualifiers Matchday 1 (07/09/2014) Germany 2-1 Scotland Goals: 1-0 T.

  • Reframing Scottish Football: Strategy and the Short-Term Nature of the Football Industry
Edinburgh Napier University Business School Reframing Scottish Football: Strategy and the short-term nature of the football industry Stephen Robertson Doctor of Business Administration A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Edinburgh Napier University, for the award of Doctor of Business Administration July 2015 “In human behavior there was always uncertainty and risk. The goal of the Oakland front office was simply to minimize the risk. Their solution wasn’t perfect, it was just better than the hoary alternative, rendering decisions by gut feeling.” Lewis (2011 p.136) Abstract Despite football being deeply entrenched in Scottish culture it is under- researched from a business perspective. This research develops a conceptual framework that views professional football clubs from a number of different perspectives. It draws on strategic management literature since this views the firm as the intersection between internal competence, customer perception and competition within an industry. A review of previous sports business research highlighted five main themes that were used to create a structure for the analysis: on-field performance, attendance, finance, the playing squad and the manager. These themes were used as frames to view the firms within the industry from a number of different perspectives. Each frame allows a different aspect of the firm to be considered singly in turn and then collectively to develop a deeper understanding of the existing frames in use within the industry. The research is based on a pragmatic philosophy that allows mixed methods to be combined to provide both an objective and subjective view of the industry. The subjective view was drawn from five interviews with senior figures within Scottish professional football.
