Com realização da Opus Promoções, a dona do hit A Thousand Years, lançado no filme Amanhecer da saga Crepúsculo, fará apresentações em três cidades em abril: Rio de Janeiro (dia 22, no Teatro Bradesco Rio), São Paulo (dia 24, no Teatro Bradesco) e Porto Alegre (dia 25, no Auditório Araújo Vianna). Esta é a pergunta que Christina Perri fez quando ela começou a compor seu segundo álbum, uma coleção de canções catárticas que buscam sintetizar como tomamos decisões no amor e na vida. O primeiro álbum da cantora, lovestrong., abordava as consequências de um rompimento, assinalando Perri como uma artista honesta e verdadeira pronta para compartilhar sua jornada emocional com seus fãs. Esse disco, lançado em 2011, foi impulsionado pelo sucesso do single de Perri Jar of Hearts e levou a cantora a nove turnês ao longo de 27 meses. Seu último show para promover lovestrong. ocorreu em 9 de outubro de 2012 no emblemático Hollywood Bowl de Los Angeles com Jason Mraz. Duas semanas depois, Perri compôs a primeira música para head or heart, seu segundo álbum. “Eu não sei ficar sem compor”, diz Perri. “Como eu continuo a me apaixonar e desapaixonar, com frequência eu me encontro nesses enormes altos e baixos. Eu escrevi ideias para o álbum dois, mas eu nunca o chamei de álbum dois. Essas eram as músicas que estavam me ajudando durante a turnê. Mas quando cheguei em casa, eu compus uma música chamada Trust e tive uma epifania. Eu tentei confiar no meu coração, tentei confiar na minha cabeça e me sinto como se eu tivesse escolhido errado todas as vezes. Eu sabia que o álbum tinha que se chamar head or heart e metade das músicas seria canções do coração e metade seria canções da cabeça. Esse foi o momento em que ele começou para mim criativa e conceitualmente.” Perri passou dois meses compondo e demonstrando por conta própria no final de 2012, antes de passar vários meses no início de 2013 escrevendo junto com quase 30 outros compositores. Ela dizia “sim” a qualquer colaboração, recusando-se a entrar em seu próprio caminho criativo. "Eu queria jogar um jogo chamado sim”, explica a cantora. Perri saiu dessas sessões contínuas na primavera com quase 50 possíveis canções para head or heart. A cantora sabia imediatamente quais levar para o estúdio, principalmente porque instintivamente ela sabia quais canções se encaixam para criar o quadro geral que ela queria que o álbum pintasse. Um grande fator na seleção das músicas também foi uma preocupação sobre como elas se traduziriam no palco, especialmente porque Perri fez inúmeras turnês em sua estreia. A cantora escolheu 16 para gravar e voou para Londres para se encontrar com o produtor Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran). Perri inicialmente pretendia escrever uma faixa com Gosling, mas acabou ficando na fazenda dele em Bagshot (Reino Unido) durante o verão para gravar no “pequeno estúdio” dele. A dupla produziu nove das 13 músicas do álbum juntos e eles terminaram de gravar em Los Angeles em agosto. Lá, Perri também gravou com Butch Walker, John Hill e Martin Johnson. Sua música final, I Don’t Want to Break, foi coescrita com Jack Antonoff, do fun.’s, que coproduziu a trilha com Hill em Nova York no famoso Electric Lady Studios. O álbum começa com Trust, uma música penetrante e evocativa que faz a pergunta definitiva do álbum. Para Perri, “confiança” é a pergunta e todas as canções que se seguem são suas possíveis respostas. A comovente e propulsiva Sea of Lovers começou como um poema que Perri transformou em música, ao passo que Human, o primeiro single efervescente do álbum, apresenta intensidade com urgência inspiradora. head or heart encerra com comoção sincera em uma trilha chamada I Believe, que Perri compôs para um evento organizado pela entidade beneficente To Write Love On Her Arms. A canção, em grande parte baseada em afirmações, se tornou viral após sua apresentação no evento e entrou automaticamente no álbum. A música – e o próprio álbum – termina adequadamente com as palavras “This is not the end of me/This is just the beginning” (Este não é o meu fim; é apenas o início). “Eu sabia que a única maneira de fazer o meu segundo trabalho dar certo era por dizer a verdade", Perri explica. "Não estou fingindo que eu percebi isso. Estou fazendo com que todo mundo acompanhe a jornada do meu coração e da minha cabeça e essas músicas são o que aconteceu, mas eu não conheço a forma de confiar em ambos. Acho que essa é a resposta – confiar em ambos – mas eu ainda não descobri como fazer isso. O modo como me mantive autêntica é por ser completamente honesta. A cura para mim vem de tocar músicas ao vivo. Há feridas que não cicatrizam até eu fazer isso. Estou ansiosa para ver o que essas músicas farão emocionalmente para mim nos próximos anos.” Essas músicas, em muitos aspectos, parecem ser uma extensão lógica de lovestrong., um álbum que primeiramente permitiu a Perri abrir seu coração para o mundo. A carreira da cantora deu um salto para a frente depois que Perri apresentou seu single de platina triplo Jar of Hearts no programa So You Think You Can Dance. Ela rapidamente assinou um contrato com a Atlantic Records, criando o seu álbum de estreia, uma coleção agridoce de canções sobre o amor e perda do mesmo.
