TLW 127 12 13 TLW 127 The beauty of scrabble is that anybody can beat anybody. Well, pretty much. A year and a half after I started playing scrabble in English I was in sunny Thailand playing Panupol, at that time the World Champion en titre. My hands were shaking but fortunately my head was LETTERS also responding. I played SOFTISH to win the game. It took me another year to realize that it wasn’t such a great achievement. You give a player a gun and the other player a sword. Most of the time, the player with the gun will win no matter how skilled the player with the sword is. And as far as I know, Zorro is still doing movies. Tamas Adrian A new thread this month that started on UK Scrabble, it could run and run. If you have something you are proud of or just want to share with others send it in. Ed My “great” moment came in the finals of the 1994 NSC (in those days there were quite a Greatest victory or most notable scalp taken few of us at the Finals having qualified at regional events!). It was also my 40th birthday weekend.

I was playing Mark Nyman (Who’d won the WSC the previous year) and I was well behind. At the end, he’d just played JASPE and picked up the last 6 letters. My rack was BERLINS Since I began playing 15 years ago it had always been my ambition to play a reigning world which I played making SCUP. Quite appropriate really as his pickup scuppered his chances champion. In the UK Open in Coventry on Jan 8 this year in game 34 I sat down opposite of keeping the win - I think they added up to about 18 points. Sadly I’ve never been able Nigel Richards. He began with the very open MOG h7 suggesting he had at least 1 S but to repeat that performance against him in our subsequent encounters. Mike O’Rourke allowing me to play the 7 from EGNNORT i8 [1]. I drew EILOSTW so had the unblockable OWLIEST along either row 6 or 15. Nigel replied with REASTED 15f so OWLIEST/SMOG 6c it was. Nigel probably had drawn 7 consonants so dumped R(E)WTH D4 (30) & from my At a Winter Matchplay some considerable time ago, I overheard (as did everyone else in the draw of ADHIOOT DOT(H) a8 (24) seemed good. I drew EU? to AHIO & saw the 8 with the room, and probably not a few in neighbouring counties) a player examining the next round’s T from DOTH immediately hoping Nigel would play elsewhere. Thankfully he scored well fixture list with some dismay. “I’ve just lost my first three games, and who do I get next?” he from another bad rack with GLIAL/LOWLIEST b2 (29) so down went the 8 from AEHIOT? enquired rhetorically. He proceeded to ejaculate “The World Sodding Champion!” [2] putting me +77. We each scored steadily until the endgame, Nigel steadier than me, his best play from another awful rack being CICU(T)A for 22+5 & after 10 moves each I was I hadn’t thereto known that Mark Nyman was good with lawns. Steve Thomas leading 396-341. Again Nigel had to have had a poor rack & from his side 2 S’s & a ? were still unseen. He opened with REEDE 4d for 8 but I held AEPSSU? so PAUSErS/PE 3h (72) taking the last tile out the bag ended it. He replied with JOEY l1 (44) I played out with the T & with Nigel left with LPRZ there was a big swing of 30 at the countback*. Trouble with Nigel, as expected was very gracious in defeat & as we broke for dinner after the game, & he was at my table along with Julie, my wife, all the Romanians, Llewellyn Jegels from Stuttgart Do you also have trouble with tile tracking? You do not have that systematic, methodical & fellow Scot Jim Wilkie where, I have to say, I didn’t hide my light under a bushel. character that ensures you get it right each time? You get distracted by a recount on a move score, or a comment on an adjacent board or it simply slips your mind to do the job after I thought Nigel might consider retiring after losing to such a schlemiel but he did finish 3rd a pithy move? and went on to finish 2nd behind young Malaysian starlet Suanne Ong the following week in Malaysia!! Having recently lost a game when, at the end, my opponent had GUAA on his rack and only one place to go out with GUAVA I could have kicked myself. Incidentally, I downed UK Champion Allan Simmons in both our games here also along with another high-flyer Mikki Nicholson and my efforts were rewarded with the C group ratings It would be interesting to hear what techniques and strategies players use to ensure accurate tracking both during the game and at the endgame stage. prize and a ratings increase of 8 points, 7 of which have been lost since. Ray Tate

P.S. Allan got his revenge in BEST this week as you may have seen. Perhaps, once say, 80 odd tiles have been played, one needs to allow time to check that one has an accurate account of which 20 remain. How long should one allow on one’s clock to do this?

TLW 127 14 15 TLW 127 Next issue in Across the Board there will be special coverage of the recent ABSP Masters tournament, and as a special preview of this we have an extra board position for you to consider this month. The game is Allan Simmons vs. Paul Gallen, and you’re in Allan’s shoes ACROSS THE BOARD as he trails 281-331. What would you do under the circumstances? TLW 127 16 17 TLW 127 In Allan’s words:

I had to go for QUATE or QUARE top right and there were good chances with the number of Es unseen. So that left me DZNT or DZNR to use. I wanted to play three tiles to give the best shot but could only see TREZ which used the T and R so had to settle for REZ which at least bagged 22 points meanwhile. There’s no point in playing QUAT or QUAD this turn because I needed a better comeback score than that. I would have preferred to keep the R (Quackle has pointed out TENZON through E and ON does this which keeps alive possibilities of a tws Q play ending in RE, forming RAIA. If I’d seen that I might have compromised another R.I.P. 7 points to give two comeback options. Celia Osborn Ask the Experts I am so sorry to pass on the sad news that Celia Osborn passed away on Thursday 28th May after a long battle with cancer. From issue 128 onwards there will be a new feature in Across the Board by the name of ‘Ask the Experts’. If you’ve had a tricky play in a game- tournament, club or kitchen table, it Celia set up the Coventry Scrabble Club doesn’t matter, where you were faced with numerous moves and wished you could consult some 18 years ago and has run the club with some of the country’s best players about it, here is your chance to get that help (albeit quietly and efficiently throughout all those retrospectively). Please send all moves to the usual address. If you’re rated 175+ and wish years. She truly loved the game win or lose to join the panel, then by all means- the more the merrier! and was always keen to help and encourage new members.

Scrabble has certainly helped Celia over these last difficult months by keeping her active. Her last tournament was Little Miss Perfect at Sutton Coldfield at the end of March and her last club session just four weeks ago.

She belonged to Brighton and Hove Scrabble Club, went on Viv and John’s Scrabble holidays, and came Miss P realised that a huge number of allowable words are not used by to my home every Tuesday evening for some friendly games.
