  • Growing Cleavages in India? Evidence from the Changing Structure of Electorates, 1962-2014
WID.world WORKING PAPER N° 2019/05 Growing Cleavages in India? Evidence from the Changing Structure of Electorates, 1962-2014 Abhijit Banerjee Amory Gethin Thomas Piketty March 2019 Growing Cleavages in India? Evidence from the Changing Structure of Electorates, 1962-2014 Abhijit Banerjee, Amory Gethin, Thomas Piketty* January 16, 2019 Abstract This paper combines surveys, election results and social spending data to document the long-run evolution of political cleavages in India. From a dominant- party system featuring the Indian National Congress as the main actor of the mediation of political conflicts, Indian politics have gradually come to include a number of smaller regionalist parties and, more recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These changes coincide with the rise of religious divisions and the persistence of strong caste-based cleavages, while education, income and occupation play little role (controlling for caste) in determining voters’ choices. We find no evidence that India’s new party system has been associated with changes in social policy. While BJP-led states are generally characterized by a smaller social sector, switching to a party representing upper castes or upper classes has no significant effect on social spending. We interpret this as evidence that voters seem to be less driven by straightforward economic interests than by sectarian interests and cultural priorities. In India, as in many Western democracies, political conflicts have become increasingly focused on identity and religious-ethnic conflicts

Where are our women ? Where are our women? Where are our women? As our movement for Dalit liberation continues, one of the most vigilant questions we can ask ourselves is, "where are our women?" They are our mothers, our wives, our daughters and sisters. But do we recognize them as our leaders, our thinkers, and our visionaries? I ask you again. Do you know where they are in our movement? Hindu ideology has been extremely successful in dividing our base and blinding us to our essential truths. Under Hinduism, we have forgotten the ways of our matriarchal culture, and, how strong a foundations our families could have had if we had confronted patriarchy that divides us still. As a united Dalit people, we must put at the center of our struggle those who are most oppressed by the hindu system. Our women. Dalit women face the double oppression of caste and patriarchy exacted by both men outside and within our own communities. In organizing and building our movement we must take heed that we do not perpetuate models of leadership that replicate the very systems we are struggling to defeat. To recognize Dalit women’s leadership in the field. D-Mag plans to launch a monthly interview column dedicated to Dalit women's organizations.

  • Statewide Analysis of the 14Th General Elections in India
INDIA. ELECTIONS 2004 STATEWIDE ANALYSIS OF THE FOURTEENTH GENERAL ELECTIONS IN INDIA HARYANA CSDS Team with Ashutosh Kumar The Congress swept the polls in Haryana 9 of the 10 Lok Sabha seat and polled 42.1 percent votes, nearly seven percent higher than what the party polled in 1999 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP managed to win the Sonepat seat. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) could not even open its account and polled 22.4 percent votes. The twin factors, which worked against the ruling INLD in Haryana were, first breaking of the alliance between the BJP and the INLD and the non- performance of the state government. During the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, when, the INLD contested the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP, they had won all the 10 seats and the alliance had polled 57.9 percent votes. Assuming that these two political parties had contested the 2004 elections as allies, the alliance would have polled 39.6 percent votes. But they would still have remained far been the Congress in terms of votes polled. If BJP-INLD had contested the elections in alliance they would have won only 3 Lok Sabha seats and still Congress would have managed to win 7 seats. It is not only the breaking of the alliance which explains the rout of the INLD, but there is some thing more to explain why voters in Haryana, voted for the Congress in large numbers. High level of dissatisfaction of the people with the Chautala government is the real reason why people turned away from the ruling INLD.

  • Evolution of Party System in India
Vol. VI, Issue 1 (June 2020) http://www.mzuhssjournal.in/ Evolution of Party System in India L. H. Chhuanawma * Abstract The paper begins by defining the terms 'political party' and 'party system'. It then traces the evolution of the party system in India from the Indian independence in 1947 and takes us through the various phases of the evolution of the Indian party system. Keywords : Party, Party System, Indian Democracy. Like all modern democracies of the world today, successive Indian governments, whether at the Centre or at the states, have always been formed by political parties. It is therefore obvious that an understanding of party system in India is vital for understanding the Indian political system. What is a Party? According to The New Encyclopaedia Britannica (1981, p.677), “Political parties are groups organized for the purpose of achieving and exercising power within a political system”. A political party differs from other organized groups in that it necessarily seeks power with a view to form a government or influence governmental policies. What is a Party System? Party system is “the system of interactions”, says Sartori in his classic work Parties and Party Systems: A Framework for Analysis, “resulting from inter-party competition. That is, the system in question bears on the relatedness of parties to each other, on how each party is a function (in the mathematical sense) of the other parties and reacts, competitively or otherwise, to the other parties” (Sartori, 1976, p.4). Similarly, The Encyclopedia Americana (1983, p.338) also defines party system as “the number of parties and the pattern of relationships among the parties within a nation”.
