This tour will take the delegation to the world’s leading examples of Sustainable Development, demonstrating how the future’s key issues are being solved. Going on to the Youth Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the delegates will represent New Zealand as young leaders, sharing their perspectives at a conference full of speakers, changemakers and other young global citizens, and engaging with their potential to make the world a better place. This trip will equip students with the knowlege, skills and experiences that are vital to New Zealand’s continued presence on the world stage. Having worked and volunteered for UN Youth for the last four years, I know the youth of New Zealand are capable of so many amazing things. They are driven, inspired and talented, and as a country we are responsible for helping them realise this and make good of the opportunities that they have available to them. Within our group, we have students who thrive in their own respective arenas. Among the delegation we have local board representatives, liaisons to MPs, school leaders and more. In the trip’s application process, there was one common trait that united this diverse bunch - they all wanted to know how they could do more. They were hungry to see the world and learn from it, seeing the Global Development Tour as their means to do exactly that. This Sponsorship Proposal will take you through what the Global Development Tour is and introduce you to the young people who have done everything they can to be a part of it. It gives me great pride to present this initiative to you and your organisation. I sincerely hope you see the Global Development Tour as I do, an unprecedented opportunity to contribute towards to the development and enrichment of New Zealand’s future generation of leaders. Thank you for your consideration. Yours sincerely, Brendon Lee Global Development Tour 2017 Director UN Youth New Zealand Global Development Tour 2017 3 THE GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT TOUR The Global Development Tour is an educational tour. This opportunity was created by UN Youth to offer something alternative to school field trips, foreign exchanges and the traditional OE. Instead, the Global Development Tour will teach and contextualise global issues and policy making. It fulfils a growing interest from the next generation about how the world’s interconnected, diplomatic community functions, and how this plays a vital role in global development and resolving the world’s ongoing issues. Historically, UN Youth has directed an annual delegation to the The Hague Model United Nations (THIMUN) in The Netherlands. As a leading civics education charity, we have taken time to consider the learning outcomes of past delegations to THIMUN. This year the decision has been made to take the delegation of students to Europe and New York as we have done before, but not attend the THIMUN conference. The structure of the trip instead is being adapted to follow on more accurately from the educational material we offer domestically, and as a replacement the delegation will be attending the Youth Assembly held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Each stop on the tour relates to a focus area of the Sustainable Development Goals - basic needs, equity and education, business and innovation, environmental sustainability and global partnership. While in each new city, relevant policy makers, businesses and NGOs will be visited for educational meetings, which will be used to inform the delegates’ knowledge to be shared at the Youth Assembly. For 2017, the Global Development Tour is focusing specifically on the United Nation’s 2030 Goals for Sustainable Development. These universally agreed targets represent how we hope to see the world change for the better in the next 15 years. Showcasing the businesses, NGOs and civil servants leading this vision to our young people will set them an example to follow in their time at university and their careers. We will highlight these issues in context and the nuances considered in their resolution. This first hand approach will empower our delegation to take on these problems themselves in their own communities, bringing home all they have gained back to New Zealand. 4 Sponsorship Proposal YOUTH ASSEMBLY AT THE UN The Tour culminates in the Youth Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, demonstrating to the delegation how to apply their knowledge to meaningful change in their own communities. Youth Assembly has held 17 sessions since 2004, and is connected to permanent missions as well as organisations such as the International Youth Council and Resolutions Project. The conference will feature panel discussions and speeches by UN high officials and ambassadors, the private sector and civil society, and youth leaders. In addition, students will have opportunities to engage in roundtable discussions lead by heads of non-governmental organizations, corporations, and government or UN officials about planning for and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. UN YOUTH NEW ZEALAND UN Youth is a charity that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom. Through fun workshops, Model UN, and outreach events, we engage secondary and tertiary students in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. UN Youth provides young people with the necessary educational and social skills to excel. Annually, over 2000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Invercargill attend UN Youth events. UN Youth is powered by a body of 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their week to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
