LONSDALE SOUTH OF THE SANDS

Is bounded on the north by \Vestmorland; on the east by Yorkshire; on the south by the hundred of .Amounderness ; and on the west by the great bay of . It is twenty-two miles in length from north to south, and sixteen in breadth from east to west, and its area is about 150,622 acres. The rh·er Lune, which rises in the mountains of \Vestmorland, and enters near Kirby Lonsdale, sweeps nearly across ~outh Lonsdale in a south-westerly direction, through the delightful vale of Lunedale, and after receiving in its romantic cour!:le of about forty-seven miles, the Leek, the Cant, the Greta, the \Venning,the Artlebeck, and the Conder, falls into :, the great receptacle of the waters of Lonsdale. The soil to the north of the Lune is chiefly of the dry friable and limestone kind, and the land stretching out to the southern border of the estuary formed by the same noble river, is of the rich loamy kind, but a great portion of the eastern side of the hundred consists of high moorlands. South Lonsdale contains the parishes of Bolton-le-Sands, Claughton, Cockerham, Halton, Lancaster, Melling, Tatbam, Tun stall, W arton, and Wbittington, with the township of Dalton in Burton-in-Kendal; and its population in 1801, was 24,955; 1811, 25,776; 1821, 29,541; 1~31, 32,L1J5; and in 1841,34,0-12. The annual value of the property in South Lonsda1e, as assessed for land tax in I 692, was £5244. Jls. 6ld.; 1815, £175,()49; 1829, £161,176; and in 1841, £17 4,863., being an increase in 14 9 years of :~300 per cent.
