ROBERT SLOSS PUBLICATIONS

Robert Sloss Publications have their genesis in the three 1988 Bi- centenary 7 day celebration bushwalks, from Katoomba to Mittagong, a distance of 140km. Constant requests for maps and notes for this walk resulted in the publishing of the Ensign Barrallier Guide Book. Having been bitten by the literary bug the Author then set out to record all the known tracks in the bushwalking areas between Blaxland and Nowra. He has discovered near forgotten walks as well as creating over 18 new walks.

St Matthew’s Anglican Church The Oaks

Circa 1838 /39: Built by the families of John Wild of “Vanderville” and Major Russell of “Orthez” for their servants and families, it is constructed of local timber. Archival photos show the church to have been originally L shaped but it had to be extensively renovated in 1923 due to damage by white ants. The church was renovated again in 1983 by The Oaks Historical Society volunteers. The cemetery contains some interesting headstones, included that of First Fleeter, Henry Kable, and caskets removed from Burragorang Valley before it was flooded for the Warragamba Dam.

The Viaduct off Menangle Street Picton commenced being built in 1862 and took several years to complete. It has five 12.2 mtr arches, is 84 mtrs long with the highest point being 23.8 mtrs above the creek bed. It is now the oldest existing stone archway over water in NSW which is still in use.
