Last summer in Gstaad, all eight seeds made it through. Prior to that, the last time it occurred was at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal where the top seeds advanced to the quarter-finals. In the first match on, top seed Roberto Bautista Agut and No. 8 Adrian Mannarino meet for the third time (tied 1-1). They also split two meetings on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2009 and ’11. Bautista Agut is playing in his first match of the week after a bye and walkover vs. Filip Krajinovic. Bautista Agut is the top seed in an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time in his career. He is off to a career-best 9-2 start, having captured his third career ATP World Tour title in Auckland (d. Sock) last month and following with a fourth round showing at the Australian Open (l. to Berdych in five sets). Mannarino is playing in his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season. The Frenchman is trying to reach his first semi-final since the final in Bogota in July. In the second match on, No. 3 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez takes a 2-0 head-to-head advantage against No. 6 Gilles Muller. Their last meeting came almost seven years ago in June 2009 at the Queen’s Club in London as the Spaniard prevailed in straight sets. Garcia-Lopez is attempting to reach his first semi-final since getting to the final in Shenzhen in October (l. to Berdych). Muller, who at 32 is still looking for his first career ATP World Tour title, reached the semi-finals in Sydney last month (l. to Dimitrov). In the evening session, No. 5 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber brings a 4-1 head-to-head lead against No. 2 Viktor Troicki. The German has won the last four meetings since losing their first match at the 2008 US Open. Kohlschreiber is appearing in his first quarter-final of the season and he’s looking to reach his first semi-final since Moscow last October. Troicki is off to a career- best 8-2 start and last month he repeated his title in Sydney (d. Dimitrov). He then advanced to the 3R at the Australian Open (l. to Raonic). In the final match on, No. 7 seed Martin Klizan plays No. 4 Andreas Seppi, who won both previous meetings (’12 ATP Masters 100 Paris, ’15 Hamburg). Klizan, who came into Sofia with an 0-3 record in 2016, is appearing in his first quarter-final of the season. Seppi is trying to reach his first semi-final since Hamburg last July.
