CRETE BIRD REPORT 1989 CRETE BIRD REPORT 1989 CRETE BIRD REPORT 1989 CRETE BIRD REPORT 1989 CRETE BIRD REPORT 1989 Compiled by: Stephanie Coghlan Crete Bird Report 1989 WEATHER The Winter and Spring of 1988/1989 had been very dry with very little winter rain or snow. In late March a heavy storm ruined the Independence Day parade on 25th. April was mild and sunny but there were still periods of rough weather. The weather settled down after this. The Summer was very, very hot. In October the weather was mixed being cold and wet and stormy at times. This produced a disappointing migrant evidence. Amongst the hirundines there were plenty of swallows but few martins, and only one species of Wheatear was recorded. The rivers were dry and recent rain produced pools in the riverbeds but these did not attract birds. BIRDS The dry weather resulted in fewer records of wildfowl this Spring. However there were plenty of other records of interest with Greater Sand Plover, Pacific Golden Plover, Kittiwake, White-breasted Kingfisher, Upchers Warbler, Spectacled Warbler, Marmora's Warbler, Rock Nuthatch, Crossbill and Bullfinch amongst others being reported and Penduline Tit turned up again in October. SYSTEMATIC LIST of BIRDS RECORDED IN 1989 Please note that some of these records are printed subject to verification. LITTLE GREBE Tachybaptus ruficollis Common on open water. • Spatial Distribution and Abundance of the Endangered Fan Mussel Pinna Nobilis Was Investigated in Souda Bay, Crete, Greece
Vol. 8: 45–54, 2009 AQUATIC BIOLOGY Published online December 29 doi: 10.3354/ab00204 Aquat Biol OPENPEN ACCESSCCESS Spatial distribution, abundance and habitat use of the protected fan mussel Pinna nobilis in Souda Bay, Crete Stelios Katsanevakis1, 2,*, Maria Thessalou-Legaki2 1Institute of Marine Biological Resources, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), 46.7 km Athens-Sounio, 19013 Anavyssos, Greece 2Department of Zoology–Marine Biology, Faculty of Biology, University of Athens, Panepistimioupolis, 15784 Athens, Greece ABSTRACT: The spatial distribution and abundance of the endangered fan mussel Pinna nobilis was investigated in Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. A density surface modelling approach using survey data from line transects, integrated with a geographic information system, was applied to estimate the population density and abundance of the fan mussel in the study area. Marked zonation of P. nobilis distribution was revealed with a density peak at a depth of ~15 m and practically zero densities in shallow areas (<4 m depth) and at depths >30 m. A hotspot of high density was observed in the south- eastern part of the bay. The highest densities occurred in Caulerpa racemosa and Cymodocea nodosa beds, and the lowest occurred on rocky or unvegetated sandy/muddy bottoms and in Caulerpa pro- lifera beds. The high densities of juvenile fan mussels (almost exclusively of the first age class) observed in dense beds of the invasive alien alga C. racemosa were an indication of either preferen- tial recruitment or reduced juvenile mortality in this habitat type. In C. nodosa beds, mostly large individuals were observed. The total abundance of the species was estimated as 130 900 individuals with a 95% confidence interval of 100 600 to 170 400 individuals.

Autumn flowers were slow to emerge from the parched ground but, nevertheless, we saw everything we expected, except in smaller quantities than we may have hoped for. We had a great week exploring the wilder parts of western Crete and many aspects of its fascinating geology, history and archaeology. Our success was due, in no small part, to the enthusiasm and good humour of the group, the interesting walks and good food. Day 1 Tuesday 17th October We arrived in Crete in mid-afternoon. The weather was sunny, settled and clear, with a temperature in the mid- twenties and it remained that way for the rest of the week. After checking into our hotel, we made the short journey to the Theriso Gorge, in the foothills of the White Mountains, a little way south of the city. We made a few brief stops in the narrow gorge, finding our first Cyclamen graecum subsp. candicum, wedged into tight crevices in the limestone. On the cliffs, we identified some of the commoner endemic plants, typical of Crete’s interesting chasmophyte flora, many of which we would encounter during the rest of the week.

  • Chapter 3 Canea and Suda1
3: CANEA AND SUDA CHAPTER 3 CANEA AND SUDA1 Foundation of Canea Canea was founded by the Venetians to keep the Greeks in subjection in the middle of the 13th century. Pashley quotes an interesting passage recording this from the entry for the year 1252 from a manuscript Cronaca Veneziana:i “The Greeks of the island of Candia have always been badly disposed towards the Venetian Government, not content to dwell under it. With this knowledge the Venetian Government planned to found a city between Candia and Retimo2 and in this way the site of Canea was made a city, and many men of noble birth were sent to dwell there on the terms on which the rest of the men of noble birth were sent to Candia.” The error of the chronicler as to the position of Canea is curious. Canea Siege Canea is still surrounded to some extent by its Venetian fortifications, though the gates have disappeared since the Turk left and especially on the south the wall has been sadly diminished and is still more threatened. Their historic charm is antipathetic to the Greek. The best stretch of walls is that to the west of the town, which is in general form an oblong, with the two short sides on the east and west, one long side to the north along the sea and the other to the south where the gate stood; this side has been much destroyed and on the site of a part of the wall a large market erected, doubtless more sanitary than the old bazaars, but of a painful ugliness.3 But it was these walls which sustained the siege of 1645 when the Turks took the town after attacking it for [60] days and thus got their first footing in the island, after the preliminary occupation of the island of Saint Theodore.
