In the meantime I found a boathook - Jack New Dock Transporter By Ron Guido Fall is a special time of year in Ontario’s challenging as every Cottager knows from Cottage Country. Putting all the cottage experience. In years gone by, I was capable of summer stuff away for the upcoming hard doing the work myself and later we began hiring water season requires a bit of work before the a crew. However, eventually, finding a crew to Big Chill sets in. The boats require some time remove the dock became increasingly difficult. and effort, but the heavy lifting literally comes Bonnie and I have been “cottagers” for twenty when removing the marine rail system and years on Doe Lake, north of Huntsville, dock at the end of the boating season. The dock Ontario, Canada. The marine rail system and spring installation and fall removal are dock are installed in the spring and removed in the late summer. Removing the rail system is fairly easy as the rail sections are six feet long, pinned together, and made of lightweight aluminum. The four section aluminum dock is a little more difficult; each section is twelve feet long. Three sections are six feet wide and the fourth is eight feet wide. After removing the cedar decking, dock sections weigh about 175 and 220 pounds respectively. Finding a reliable crew became ever more challenging. And frustrating. And expensive. We decided to take things into our own hands and began making wooden prototypes on pneumatic wheels to transport the dock sections. After almost ten years of building

The Deep 6 Page 11 of 25 United States Power Squadrons® its Bulldog jacks, adjust the dock legs as necessary, and then roll the dock in or out of the water. The Transporter is on pneumatic tires that work well on our hard packed sand lakebed. We usually place the Transporter just forward of the mid-point of the dock. This placement, and resultant leverage gained, provides easier control with minimal lifting requirements. Once the Transporter in place, it's relatively easy to roll the docks into place. It's important to realize that our Transporter was designed specifically for our dock dimensions and water depth. For example, our Bulldog jacks have a ten inch rise limit. For three of our dock sections, the Transporter rolls under the frame easily, but the section in the shallowest water requires the dock to be lifted slightly to roll the Transporter in place. I use a Farmer’s Jack to raise the dock. Or, we could also simply adjust the dock legs up or down, as necessary. In the spring, we can easily roll the sections into place because of a slight slope; however, in the fall, we use a winch to bring the Transporter and dock sections up the incline and above spring freshet water levels. Our lake’s water level comes up about three to four feet in the spring because of lake water level management. If necessary, a single person can perform dock installation and removal. I have been installing the dock single handed in the prototypes that “almost” worked, we discovered spring using the Transporter. It's probably an inherent design flaw. We could not extricate safer with two people in the fall because of the larger wood prototypes from under the dock winch operation. We have successfully used the sections once we reached deeper water as the Dock Transporter four times, twice in 2015 and wood floated up between the frame members. twice in 2016. By the end of 2017, we will have recovered our initial investment. We began serious design work in late 2014 after a particularly frustrating dock removal effort that fall. We discussed design, fabrication, and costs with General Welding in Elma, NY. They thought our concept was functional and suggested several modifications. They completed the newly minted “Dock Transporter” in early spring 2015. The Transporter cost between $1,500 and $1,800, including minor modifications since initial fabrication. The concept is to roll the four feet by four feet Transporter between the dock legs, extend the “arm wings” of the Transporter to outer edges of the dock frame, raise the Transporter using Page 12 of 25 The Deep 6 Fall 2016 We also removed large granite stones from our path between our winter storage location and water’s edge. This allows the Transporter to roll smoothly, reducing stress on our 120V, 1,500 pound capacity winch. We also have a standby DC winch if needed. Next spring, we will pour a small concrete pad where the 120V winch will be mounted. We have been securing the DC winch to a tree stump. We laugh when we talk about our many “cottage projects”. We have to work smarter, not harder, as time goes by. Necessity is definitely the Mother of Invention in Cottage Country. And beyond that, thar be dragons! - Ron

Susquenango’s Summer Sailings By D/Lt/C Nancy Bieber, P This summer has been a busy one for Susquenango Sail and Power Squadron with lots of membership involvement in on-the- water activities.

Several members visited the Dragon Harald Hårfagre while it was in Port on the St. Lawrence River. Its home port is Haugesund, Norway and it had traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to attend numerous Tall Ship Challenges in the Great Lakes. The shiphands indicated they had a bad crossing with severe storms and a number of mishaps. At 110 feet in length, it was built as The Deep 6 Page 15 of 25 United States Power Squadrons® an authentic replica of a Nordic ship from several hundred years ago. Some members were fortunate enough to see it in full sail as it navigated the St. Lawrence River. We took part in the tradition of mail delivery along the shores of Skaneateles Lake aboard the historic Barbara S. Wiles. Twenty members sailed the three hour mailboat cruise as it traveled the length of the lake. There were roughly twenty stops where a certified U.S. mailman delivered the mail and inserted it in a mailbox located at the end of a dock or handed it to the addressee. If there was a dog with the person collecting the mail, it also received a dog bone compliments of the mailman. The highlight of the weekend was our sail on the Empire Sandy. She has a length of 203 feet overall and her homeport is Toronto, Canada. The Empire Sandy was built as an Englishman/Larch Deep Sea class tugboat for war service by the British Government in 1945. After the war, the current owner converted her

District 6 Fall Conference Keynote Speakers Bill Herrick, JN Our Fall Conference will be held in Binghamton the weekend of November 4th. Friday night’s Council meeting will be followed by a town hall and then we’ll enjoy some social time together. Saturday morning’s Conference meeting will be followed by two very informative afternoon sessions. We’ll be visited by two upstate authorities on the state of the medium we enjoy: Water.

Dr. John Halfman’s knowledge and continuing research about water quality in the Finger Lakes and especially Seneca Lake is unsurpassed. We’ll learn about changes in the lakes over the years, what part we play in those changes, and what the future may hold for the lakes. His studies aboard Hobart and William Smith’s R/V William Scandling involve college and high school students giving them a sound foundation for further work. R/V William Scandling

Bill Foster, Director of Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom, will tell us about the educational opportunities available aboard the M/V Haendel: Eco-cruises, student mini-lab cruises studying sediment cores, water clarity, invasive species and more. Students from fifth grade and up learn how scientists do research and perform the same tasks using sophisticated equipment.

Look for room and meal reservation forms at the end of this issue and come to Binghamton!
