J2 / dimanche 29 juillet 2012 Camille MUFFAT devient la seconde nageuse française de l’histoire à conquérir un titre olympique et la 4e, les deux sexes confondus. Il s’agit du second titre olympique au 400 m nage libre dames après celui remporté par Laure MANAUDOU à Athènes en 2004. Camille n’avait pas encore 15 ans ! Si l’on ajoute la médaille d’or de Jean BOITEUX en 1952, à Helsinki, ce sont 3 titres (sur les quatre) qui ont été remporté dans cette épreuve par nos représentants français. Elle est la 5e nageuse de l’histoire à accéder à une finale olympique sur cette épreuve, quatre ans après Laure MANAUDOU et Coralie BALMY en 2008. Les deux autres finalistes sont Yvonne GODARD (1932) et Héda FROST (1956). Il s’agit de la 11e médaille de l’histoire pour la natation féminine (2 en or, 4 en argent et 5 en bronze). Toutes obtenues dans des épreuves individuelles. Coralie BALMY accède pour la seconde fois consécutive à la finale olympique du 400 m nage libre, après celle de Pékin en 2008.
