The fungus destroyed about one-third of that year's crop, and nearly all that of 1846. After a season's remission, it also ruined most of the 1848 harvest. These repeated attacks made the Irish famine more protracted than most. Partial failures of the potato crop were nothing new in Ireland before 1845, but damage on the scale wrought by the ecological shock of potato blight was utterly unprecedented (Solar 1989; Bourke 1993; Clarkson and Crawford 2001). However, the famine would not have been nearly so lethal had Ireland's dependence on the potato been less. The experience of other European economies in the 1840s is telling in this respect. In Ireland the daily intake of the third or so of the population mainly reliant on the potato was enormous: 4-5 kilos daily per adult male equivalent for most of the year. After allowing for non-human consumption and provision for seed, the 2.1 million acres (or 0.8 million hectares) under potatoes in the early 1840s produced 6.2 million metric tons for human consumption. That amounted to an average daily intake of 4.6 lbs (or over two kilos) per man, woman, and child.

    This interdisciplinary study analyses three 20th century fictional representa- tions of the Great Irish Famine in relation to nationalist, revisionist, and post-revisionist historical interpretations of the event. It examines how writers of history and fiction respectively portray the causes and consequences of the famine, and particularly how they view the question of responsibility, which is still a matter of contention. He entered the Royal Navy in 1796 as a volunteer on HMS Thetis, commanded by his father. He was made a lieutenant in 1805 and became a captain within a year. He served in the West Indies in 1807-9, taking part in the capture of the Virgin Islands and Martinique, and in North America in 1811-14. From 1820 to 1824 he commanded HMS Forte on the North America Station. In 1825 Cochrane was appointed the first governor of Newfoundland. After representative government was introduced in 1832, his relations with the colonists worsened and he was eventually recalled by the Colonial Office in 1834. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1839 to 1841. Cochrane was made a rear-admiral in 1841 and in 1842 he was appointed second in command of the East Indies Station. Based in Hong Kong, which had become a British colony following the 1839-40 Opium War, the East Indies Station extended from the Red Sea in the west to the Philippines and New Zealand in the east. When Admiral Sir William Parker returned to England in 1844, Cochrane succeeded him as commander-in-chief. At the same time, the Station was divided into two divisions, with the western (Indian Ocean) division headed by Commodore Sir Henry Blackwood and the China division headed by Cochrane.

INTRODUCTION Newport is a truly unique place. Its superb and dramatic natural setting, its river, bridges, church and fine Main street make a visit to Newport unforgettable. It is different from all other Irish towns. As Newport continues to evolve it is important to ensure that this unique character is preserved and enhanced, and that new development and future growth is suitable and harmonious with this character. This Town Design Statement sets out to present a vision making the most of Newport’s many strengths, addressing its weaknesses and ensuring that its future growth is of the highest and most suitable quality. It stands in the famine graveyard in Sligo. Conlon wrote this description of Faoin Sceach: This Bronze Tree stands as a symbol of dignity. It marks the final resting place of the unnamed dead of this area who perished in the Great Famine of 1845-1847. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger) was like a never-ending win­ ter. Its chill of desolation brought hunger, disease, and death. In Ireland the lone tree or Sceach was held in a position of high importance from early Celtic mythology to recent times. The boulder stones surrounding the base allude to ancient forms of burial.

The Irish potato famine played a significant role in the migration patterns from Ireland to the United States, however, much of the research has solely focused on the men in these migration patterns. The women involved in these migration patterns, long neglected and overlooked by historians, were equally important to the history of the famine and subsequent migration patterns from Ireland to the United States. The men, women, and children impacted by the Irish potato famine experienced excruciating heartache and loss, as well as extreme conditions and deprivation. Yet, through it all, those who were able to migrate to the United States contributed to the growth of the Irish population and protected Irish culture.
