And he shut the door himself, and left her there alone. And so the poor miller's daughter was left there sitting, and could not think what to do for her life: she had no notion how to set to work to spin gold from straw, and her distress grew so great that she began to weep. Then all at once the door opened, and in came a little man, who said: "Good evening, miller's daughter; why are you crying?" "Oh!" answered the girl, "I have got to spin gold out of straw, and I don't understand the business." Then the little man said: "What will you give me if I spin it for you?" - "My necklace," said the girl. The little man took the necklace, seated himself before the wheel, and whirr, whirr, whirr! three times round and the bobbin was full; then he took up another, and whirr, whirr, whirr! three times round, and that was full; and so he went on till the morning, when all the straw had been spun, and all the bobbins were full of gold. At sunrise came the king, and when he saw the gold he was astonished and very much rejoiced, for he was very avaricious. He had the miller's daughter taken into another room filled with straw, much bigger than the last, and told her that as she valued her life she must spin it all in one night. The girl did not know what to do, so she began to cry, and then the door opened, and the little man appeared and said: "What will you give me if I spin all this straw into gold?" "The ring from my finger," answered the girl. So the little man took the ring, and began again to send the wheel whirring round, and by the next morning all the straw was spun into glistening gold. The king was rejoiced beyond measure at the sight, but as he could never have enough of gold, he had the miller's daughter taken into a still larger room full of straw, and said: "This, too, must be spun in one night, and if you accomplish it you shall be my wife." For he thought: "Although she is but a miller's daughter, I am not likely to find any one richer in the whole world." As soon as the girl was left alone, the little man appeared for the third time and said: "What will you give me if I spin the straw for you this time?" - "I have nothing left to give," answered the girl. "Then you must promise me the first child you have after you are queen," said the little man. "But who knows whether that will happen?" thought the girl; but as she did not know what else to do in her necessity, she promised the little man what he desired, upon which he began to spin, until all the straw was gold. And when in the morning the king came and found all done according to his wish, he caused the wedding to be held at once, and the miller's pretty daughter became a queen. In a year's time she brought a fine child into the world, and thought no more of the little man; but one day he came suddenly into her room, and said: "Now give me what you promised me." The queen was terrified greatly, and offered the little man all the riches of the kingdom if he would only leave the child; but the little man said: "No, I would rather have something living than all the treasures of the world." Then the queen began to lament and to weep, so that the little man had pity upon her. "I will give you three days," said he, "and if at the end of that time you cannot tell my name, you must give up the child to me." Then the queen spent the whole night in thinking over all the names that she had ever heard, and sent a messenger through the land to ask far and wide for all the names that could be found. And when the little man came next day, (beginning with Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar) she repeated all she knew, and went through the whole list, but after each the little man said: "That is not my name." The second day the queen sent to inquire of all the neighbours what the servants were called, and told the little man all the most unusual and singular names, saying: "Perhaps you are called Roast- ribs, or Sheepshanks, or Spindleshanks?" But he answered nothing but: "That is not my name." The third day the messenger came back again, and said: "I have not been able to find one single new name; but as I passed through the woods I came to a high hill, and near it was a little house, and before the house burned a fire, and round the fire danced a comical little man, and he hopped on one leg and cried: You cannot think how pleased the queen was to hear that name, and soon afterwards, when the little man walked in and said: "Now, Mrs. Queen, what is my name?" she said at first "Are you called Jack?" - "No," answered he. "Are you called Harry?" she asked again. "No," answered he. And then she said": "Then perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?" "The devil told you that! the devil told you that!" cried the little man, and in his anger he stamped with his right foot so hard that it went into the ground above his knee; then he seized his left foot with both his hands in such a fury that he split in two, and there was an end of him. Literature / Rumpelstiltskin. A miller boasts to the king of his daughter's (exaggerated) domestic skills; in an effort to appear important, the miller tells him that she can even spin straw into gold. The king takes a bit more interest than intended, and the daughter soon finds herself in a room full of straw with nothing but a spinning wheel and a death threat from the king, to make good on her father's empty boast. The task is impossible; she despairs; and a little man suddenly appears and offers to spin the straw to gold for her, in exchange for her necklace. The next night, under the same conditions, he again appears and does the work in exchange for her ring. The third night, the king tells her he will marry her if she completes the work, but she has nothing left to give the little man. At his suggestion, she promises him her first-born child, and he does the work on spec, as it were. She and the king get married and have a child, and sure enough, the little man shows up and tries to take it away. However, seeing her grief, he relents and gives her a loophole: If she can guess his name in the next three days, she can keep the child. So, for the next couple of days, the young queen lists every name she can think of, and sends out messengers to collect new ones, but the little man always denies that any of them is his name. By the third day, things are looking grim, until her messenger tells her that he overheard a little man singing a peculiar song: And so, at the last minute, the queen guesses the man is called Rumpelstiltskin; in some versions, he is so enraged that he stamps his foot right into the floor and tears himself in two while in others he flees into the night never to return. Rumpelstiltskin's reaction to his name varies depending on the version of the story; in the tale the Grimms first collected, he flew out of the window on a spoon. In the Grimms' early editions, he simply left in a huff. Later, they gave him the interesting but anatomically improbable death above (complete with illustration!). In yet another version, his stomp creates a hole in the floor through which he falls to Hell. (See Deal with the Devil below.) Rumpelstiltskin: A Fairy Tale Analysis. Ever since reading Women Who Run with the Wolves , I’ve been fascinated by the depth of meaning I often find in fairy tales. Recently, Rumpelstiltskin has really come alive for me as a metaphor. On some levels, it’s a coming of age story. The main character doesn’t have an identity of her own at first. She is the miller’s daughter. She is known by her relationship to her father. Her tasks are assigned to her by the miller’s boasting and the king’s greed, which both land her with an impossible task—spinning straw into gold. We all start out being the “daughter” or “son” of someone else, struggling to forge our own identities. And whether it be in a relationship, job, or school, we eventually face something over which it feels impossible to succeed. We don’t live in a society that prepares us to say “no” to unreasonable demands. We don’t live in a society that respects those who do. Like the miller’s daughter, we often feel trapped in trying to meet other’s expectations…but not just other’s expectations. We internalize those same expectations until they become our own. And the consequences aren’t negligible. In the story, the miller’s daughter is threatened with death if she fails. In life, when an employer exhibits the same greedy attitude as the king, a job can be at stake. Or maybe it’s a grade for school…or a relationship. And with those on the line, it can often feel like being threatened with death. If we fail, we might lose our ability to provide for ourselves or our career options or our love—in short, the future. At some point, Rumpelstiltskin shows up. He can spin straw into gold. He can save the miller’s daughter…for a price. The miller’s daughter doesn’t think twice before giving up her necklace. Sure it’s valuable. It might even be an heirloom. But it’s seems like a small sacrifice in the moment. How many of us get sucked into a similar deal? It might be sleep, time with friends, a principle, a boundary, but it’s something that seems small at the time. Sacrificing it gets us through. Makes us successful. Puts off that dreaded something that we would lose. But it’s a setup. In the morning, when the king comes and sees the impossible accomplished, he wants more. The miller’s daughter is given more straw to spin into gold and locked up for another night. Again, Rumpelstiltskin shows up offering to help, and the miller’s daughter is quick to hand over her ring now too. In the story, the miller’s daughter does this twice before Rumpelstiltskin ups the ante. But in life, this could go on any number of times. Some of us have more little valuables to bargain with than others. However, the specific number of times isn’t as important as the fact that it becomes habitual —so habitual that the sacrifice no longer even crosses our mind as such. It’s just what we do. The third time, the miller’s daughter is promised not just the oh-so-appealing promise of keeping her life but also of becoming the queen. She’s promised an identity—and power! Even if that power might be in service to the king that had been making the unreasonable demands in the first place. But the sacrifice this time is different. It’s not the one time sacrifice of giving up a trinket (symbolically, giving up a night of sleep or ignoring the violation of a boundary). No, this time, it’s big. Rumpelstiltskin has taken all of the little sacrifices already, now he feels the right to demand the future, to demand her first-born child. Habituated to the sacrifices and her own dependence on Rumpelstiltskin, she agrees. After the third night, the miller’s daughter becomes her own person. She is referred to as the queen now. Does she love the king? Can she love the person who threatened to kill her if she failed to fill his coffers? Presumably, he doesn’t ask her to spin more straw because she doesn’t have any contact with Rumpelstiltskin until she gives birth to her child. Children are symbolic of our hard work and our creativity. Her child is a product of her union with the king just as our creative enterprises will draw from our previous experiences, but it is genuine to her. Rumpelstiltskin helped her “fake it ‘til she made it.” But her child—that’s her own genuine creation. Her genius, so to speak. It’s the one thing that Rumpelstiltskin can’t create. He’s good at parlor tricks, doing what others want, scheming his way through life. But he cannot germinate and gestate something of his own within him. He can’t give birth to life. He can’t create; he can only manipulate. But Rumpelstiltskin comes back to demand the sacrifice of before. This time, though, instead of helping to succeed, he threatens to destroy what has come naturally from the queen. That habit of sacrificing boundaries, well-being, or principles comes back to haunt. The three days that the queen has to guess Rumpelstiltskin’s name are significant. A perfect mirror of how long it took her to enslave her future to this creature. But the naming part is also significant. Within a psychodynamic perspective, bringing the unconscious to light is the majority of the “cure” of talk therapy. It’s not that once we understand what is driving us to behave a certain way that we automatically change. We do have to work at it. But it’s far easier to change when we know what we’re up against. Naming is powerful magic. It’s only when the queen is able to name Rumpelstiltskin for what he is that she truly comes into her own power, the power to protect her creation and hold her own boundaries. Rumpelstiltskin. Rumpelstiltskin is depicted on this East German postage stamp issued in 1976. "Rumpelstiltskin" (German: "Rumpelstilzchen" ; [1] also published in English as "Rumpel-Stilts-Kin" and "Rumpel-Stilts-Ken" ) is a German fairy tale. It is included in Kinder- und Hausmärchen ( Children's and Household Tales ), the 1812 anthology of German folktales compiled by the . Similar stories exist in the folklore of the British Isles, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Iceland, Russia, Slovakia, Arabia, Japan and Latin America. The plot of "Rumpelstiltskin" is set in motion when a man falsely boasts that his clever daughter is able to use a spinning wheel to change straw into gold. The king hears this and orders the young woman to spin straw into gold for him. The story's title character, a mysterious little man with supernatural powers, comes to the young woman's aid. He agrees to spin straw into gold for her on the condition that she gives him her first born child. There have been many adaptations of the "Rumpelstiltskin" story to other media. The tale and its title character are often referenced in popular culture. Contents. The little man comes to the aid of the miller's daughter. The little man once again comes to the aid of the miller's daughter. He agrees to change all of the straw into gold for her in exchange for her ring. The king orders the miller's daughter to change yet more straw into gold for him. He tells her that if she succeeds this time, he will marry her and make her his queen. The little man once again appears and offers to change all of the straw into gold for the miller's daughter again. This time, however, the miller's daughter has no objects of any material value to give him in return. The little man says that he will do the work if the miller's daughter agrees to give him her first born child. She agrees to this bargain. The miller's daughter marries the king and becomes the queen. A year passes. She gives birth to a son and forgets all about the little man. Then the little man suddenly appears. He tells the queen to give him the child that she promised him. The queen begs the little man not to take her son. Seeing how distressed the queen is, the little man feels sorry for her. He makes another bargain with the queen. If she can guess his name within three days, he will not take her child. Rumpelstiltskin dances and sings. Each time, however, the little man responds, "That's not my name." The queen sends out a servant to ask people who live nearby what their names are in order to compile a list of more unusual names. [2] The servant returns with a long list of unusual names. When the little man returns, he tells the queen that his name is not one of those on the list. The queen sends out the servant again to compile another list of unusual names. At the edge of the forest, the servant sees a little man dancing around a fire and singing that a child will be given to him because the queen will never guess that his name is Rumpelstiltskin. The servant tells the queen what he saw and heard. [3] When the little man returns, the queen first puts two common names to him and asks him if those names are his. She then asks him if his name is Rumpelstiltskin. The little man angrily shouts, "The Devil told you that!" In his anger, he stamps his right foot so hard that it sinks into the floor. He then grabs his left foot with both hands and tears himself in two. [4] Adaptations. Works of modern literature inspired by the "Rumpelstiltskin" story include a poem called "Rumpelstiltskin" by the American writer Anne Sexton that is included in the 1971 anthology Transformations , the 1988 novel Sleeping in Flame by the American writer Jonathan Carroll, the 1988 short story "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter" by the American writer Diane Stanley, the 2006 novel A Curse Dark as Gold by the American writer Elizabeth C. Bunce, the 2012 novel Curses by the American writer J.A. Kazimer, the 2014 short story "Rampasatusan: A Retelling of Rumpelstiltskin" by the New Zealand author Shelley Chappell, the 2015 novel The Good, the Bad and the Smug by the British writer Tom Holt and the short story "Little Man" by the American writer Michael Cunningham that is included in the 2015 anthology A Wild Swan and Other Tales . Live-action films based on "Rumpelstiltskin" include a 1915 American silent movie, a 1940 Nazi German propaganda film, a 1955 West German film, a 1987 American-Israeli musical that was released as part of the Canon Movie Tales series and a 1995 American comedy horror B movie. Rumpelstiltskin is the main antagonist in the 2015 direct-to-video American fantasy adventure film Avengers Grimm , in which he battles against , , and . Rumpelstiltskin also appears as a character in the 2006 German comedy film 7 Dwarves: The Forest is Not Enough (German: 7 Zwerge: Der Wald ist nich genug ). Rumpelstiltskin appears in the 2007 American animated film Shrek the Third and serves as the main antagonist in its 2010 sequel Shrek Forever After . The character of Rumpelstiltskin also appears as one of the villains in the 2007 German-American animated film Happily N'Ever After . The second episode of the American TV series Shirley Temple's Storybook is an adaptation of "Rumpelstiltskin". The episode first aired on NBC on February 2, 1958. "Rumpelstiltskin" was adapted as the second episode of the American TV series Faerie Tale Theatre . The episode was first shown on the Showtime channel on October 16, 1982. It stars Hervé Villechaize, the French-born dwarf actor of Filipino descent, as Rumpelstiltskin. A version of "Rumpelstiltskin" is told by comedian and actor Rik Mayall in the ninth episode of the first season of the British children's TV series Grim Tales . The episode was first broadcast on the ITV network in the United Kingdom on June 9, 1989.

The twenty-first episode of the second season of the Japanese anime series Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics (Japanese: グリム名作劇場; Gurimu Meisaku Gekijō ) is an adaptation of "Rumpelstiltskin". The episode was first shown on TV Asahi in Japan on March 12, 1989. The fifth episode of the American animated TV series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child is an adaptation of "Rumpelstiltskin". The episode, which first aired on HBO on April 9, 1995, gives the story a Caribbean setting and has a predominantly African-American voice cast. It features the voices of Jasmine Guy as the miller's daughter, Denzel Washington as the king and Robert Townsend as Rumpelstiltskin. The eleventh episode of the Austrian-German animated TV series Simsala Grimm is an adaptation of "Rumpelstiltskin". The episode originally aired on the German channel Kinderkanal on November 15, 1999. "Nameless", the sixteenth episode of the American supernatural drama series Grimm , was inspired by "Rumpelstiltskin". The episode first aired on NBC on March 29, 2013.
