PHILARET OF NEW YORK AND THE ‘HERESY OF ECUMENISM’ https://www.academia.edu/19643413/ST._PHILARET_OF_NEW_YORK_AND_T HE_HERESY_OF_ECUMENISM Retrieved on 5/30/2016 When St. Philaret became Metropolitan of New York, he was hardly known outside China and Australia. And yet his career was already one of immense courage and holiness. In the 1940s he had suffered torture at the hands of the Japanese for refusing to bow to an idol in Harbin; in 1945 he was the only clergyman in the city who refused to accept a Soviet passport or commemorate the Soviet authorities that now took control of China; and in the 1950s he was subjected to torture by the Chinese communists, who unsuccessfully tried to blow him up but left him permanently injured. Involuntarily, after 1945 he found himself in the Moscow Patriarchate. But this burdened his conscience greatly, and he continued to denounce the Soviet Antichrist. Finally he got his chance to escape the nets of the communists and Soviet church: in 1961 he was able to leave China. “When, finally, with the help of God I managed to extract myself from red China, the first thing I did was turn to the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Anastasy, with a request that he consider me again to be in the jurisdiction of the Russian Church Abroad. Vladyka Metropolitan replied with mercy and love, and immediately blessed me to serve in Hong Kong already as a priest of the Synodal jurisdiction, and pointed out that every church server passing into this jurisdiction from the jurisdiction of Moscow must give a special penitential declaration to the effect that he is sorry about his (albeit involuntary) stay in the Moscow jurisdiction.

THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX PRESENCE IN AUSTRALIA: The History of a Church told from recently opened archives and previously unpublished sources. Submitted by MICHAEL ALEX PROTOPOPOV B. Theol., B. Ed., Gr Dip Ed Admin., M. Phil., T.P.T.C. A thesis submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Philosophy and Theology Faculty of Arts and Sciences Australian Catholic University Research Services Locked Bag 4115 Fitzroy, Victoria 3065 Australia 31 January 2005 A History of the Russian Orthodox Presence in Australia. ABSTRACT The Russian Orthodox community is a relatively small and little known group in Australian society, however, the history of the Russian presence in Australia goes back to 1809. As the Russian community includes a number of groups, both Christian and non-Christian, it would not be feasible to undertake a complete review of all aspects of the community and consequently, this work limits itself in scope to the Russian Orthodox community. The thesis broadly chronicles the development of the Russian community as it struggles to become a viable partner in Australia’s multicultural society. Many never before published documents have been researched and hitherto closed archives in Russia have been accessed. To facilitate this research the author travelled to Russia, the United States and a number of European centres to study the archives of pre-Soviet Russian communities. Furthermore, the archives and publications of the Australian and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church have been used extensively. The thesis notes the development of Australian-Russian relations as contacts with Imperial Russian naval and scientific ships visiting the colonies increase during the 1800’s and traces this relationship into the twentieth century.

1 PART VI Comprehensive Index of the Bishops of the Church Abroad with Short Biographies In this section, biographical sketches of all the bishops who have been in the jurisdiction of the Church Abroad since 1920 will follow.i The length of their membership, jurisdictional change or schism from the Church Abroad have played no role in their inclusion in the index. Thus, for example, all the hierarchs of Metropolitan Eulogius’s Paris Jurisdiction or of the American Metropolia have been included while these two jurisdictions were part of the Church Abroad. Likewise included were those bishops who separated from the Church Abroad and went over to the i Translator’s note: Due to the high interest that these biographies may be expected to receive, some of the information has been updated, including the introduction, the list of First Hierarchs (by adding the most recent ones: Metropolitans Vitalis, Laurus, and Hilarion), and the hierarchs who have been glorified. Short biographies of the following hierarchs who were ROCOR bishops at the time when the book was preparing to be published in Munich have been added to the original: Bishop Agathangelus (Pakhovsky) Bishop Ambrose (Cantacuzène) Bishop Benjamin (Rucalenko) Bishop Cyril (Dimitriev) Bishop Daniel (Alexandrov) Bishop Eutyches (Kurochkin) Archbishop Gabriel (Chemodakov) Bishop Innocent (Petrov) Bishop John (Legky) Archbishop Lazarus (Zurbenko) Bishop Mitrophan (Znosko-Borovsky) Bishop Valentine (Rusankov) 2 Moscow Patriarchate (e.g., the clergy in the Far East and individual hierarchs in the West). For hierarchs who separated themselves from the Church Abroad, the biography will cover only the time until their separation and will give only limited data for the subsequent time.

The history of Alaskan Christian missions is unique: Alaska developed as an arbitrary cultural/geographical construct and also one of the few regions where representatives of all three main historical branches of Christianity – Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant – proselytized simultaneously. Alaska is viewed as a special landscape where dynamic cross-cultural interactions and multi-denominational – in the case of Protestant – missionary ventures took place. Fierce competition characterized the regional cultural exchange at some times, reciprocity and friendly contacts at others. Those involved were the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church, Jesuit missionaries, Presbyterian, Episcopalian and Moravian preachers – men and women – as well as representatives of the Russian American Company, the Hudson‘s Bay Company‘s entrepreneurs and American fur traders.

D I R E C T O R Y 2015 (Based on data from August 2014) The work of compiling this contact data for parishes and clergy is an ongoing process. All diocesan bishops did give us their lists of parishes and clergy. It was not possible to contact all clergy listed for confirmation of address details before going to print with this booklet. To view the most updated information, check the free PDF downloads available at jordanville.org or the online database at directory.stinnocentpress.com If you have corrections, please send them to [email protected]; the change will be verified and entered into the online database from which data will be taken for the next printed version.
