ANU SINHA About ANU SINHA About: Anu Sinha is an established kathak exponent with an aim of promoting dance, music and cultural activities. She has been performing at major national and international events in the past 20 years, and get exposure in more than 1000 events, most of them from the Government Sector. Growing up in Jamshedpur, young Anu dreamt of learning kathak. Coming from a family where dance did not match up to a good living, and with no scope in the city for it, Anu Sinha went through the routine of life – wedding at 18 and motherhood at 21. It was only after some years, that she could finally live her dream! Anu has been learning kathak for more than two decades now, and is also successfully running her school Foundation for Krishna Kala & Education Society in Noida, where her students are aged between five and fifty. Her performances have taken her through the length and breadth of the country, and also abroad. She credits her Guru - Rajendra Kumar Gangani for it. Having garnered name and fame, Anu’s first goal was to reach out to many like her, who were caught in the rigmarole of life and couldn’t pursue their ‘dream’. Recent Performances: 1. In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

  • CHAPTER XV EDUCATION and CULTURE Historical Background
CHAPTER XV EDUCATION AND CULTURE Historical Background Kurukshetra remained a great seat of learning during ancient period. A major part of Vedic literature, including the Brahmanas, the Aranvakas, the Upinshadas and the Canoncial Sutras , was composed on the banks of the sacred river Saraswati where Rishis lived with large number of their disciples. A detailed scrutiny of the Mahabharata leaves us in no doubt that a major portion of the great epic was also composed here. Lord Krishna recited Gita in the battlefield of Kurukshetra and Manu wrote his great smriti (Manusmriti) sitting on the banks of the Saraswati at Prithudaka (modern Pehowa). The Ashramas of ancient Rishis were the most important centres for study of subjects which formed bed rock of ancient Indian culture, namely, religion, philosophy and ethics. According to Vaman Purana , the hermitages of Vishvamitra and Vasistha, the vedic sages, were located in Kurukshetra region. These hermitages used to be the seat of learning where pupils from different parts of the country gathered together for instructions in divine knowledge.1 Mahabharta also tells about numerous hermitages where pupils from distant and different parts of the country gathered for instructions around far- famed teachers. 2 The object of ancient Gurukul system of education was three- fold; the acquisition of knowledge, the inculcation of social duties and religious rites and above all, the formation of character. The teacher was the central figure, the very pivot of the educational system. He was the sole incharge of his moral, mental and physical upbringing. The teacher was the most revered person, who was considered by the pupils to be above their parents.

The trees here fulfill all desires, and the waters of immortality flow through land made of philosopher’s stone. Here, all speech is song, all walking is dancing and the flute is the Lord’s constant companion. Cows flood the land with abundant milk, and everything is self-luminous, like the sun. Since every moment in Vrindaban is spent in loving service to Krishna, there is no past, present, or future. —Brahma Samhita Acknowledgements Thanks go to Dr.

India. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT An attempt has been made to evaluate the water quality of supplemented and ground water in Tirumala and Tirupati, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. The Tirumala and Tirupati are the most popular pilligramage and education areas in Andhra Pradesh. Twelve areas of Tirumala and Tirupati have been selected, where the peoples are used supplemented and groundwater for drinking purpose, and the water samples were subjected to systematic analysis with a view to understand the potability of drinking water sources. The values obtained for different parameters have been compared with the standard values given by ISI/ICMR/ WHO and the variations were notable for the parameters like electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness and nitrates for few samples. Medical survey has been carried out to study the harmful effects on the society due to these four parameters at the areas - Tiruchanur, Renigunta and Karakambadi. Key words: Physico-chemical parameters; Total dissolved solids; Total hardness; Electrical conductivity. ______________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION Water is one of the most essential components for the existence of life on earth. Although water pollution is an age- old problem, in this modern age, the problems like growing population, sewage disposal, industrial waste, radioactive waste, etc. have polluted our water resources so much that about 75 % rivers and streams, not only of India but also of all the countries, contain polluted waters [1].
