Authentication of the Tropicana Photo Shoot Car By Glenn Lueders

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Editor’s note - In the January 2017 issue, the left photo was shown in the top corner on the cover, which Tropicana Photo 1 prompted Glenn Lueders to contact me to tell me that he believes that it is the same car he owns today. Shoot Car I asked him to give me the whole story about his Edsel and he graciously provided the following:

In the spring of 1986, I answered an advertisement to buy Edsel parts in Kingman, AZ. That is President’s 2 where I found my Edsel Citation . It had been vandalized, but it was basically com- Letter plete. I purchased the car with the intent of putting it back on the road as I had been a fan of the Edsel since I was a kid, when my father purchased a 1958 Edsel.

Tropicana Photo 3 Even though I knew that my car was a very low production-model, I was never aware that this Shoot Car – car was anything special until August 2010, when I received an email from Jere Gauss with a continued “Tropicana Reborn” advertisement from the L.A. Times attached. Jere is a recognized authority on the Edsel automobile options and technical features. I consider him a great friend and was Jim Popp’s passing 3 amused and skeptical when his email suggested the car shown in the advertisement might be the car that I own today.

Without a record of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle used in the original Registration for 4 photo shoot, it is not possible to make a determination with 100% certainty. Authentication National EOC that a surviving classic car today was the same as the one in a 59-year-old picture is a very Meet in Dearborn difficult task. However, due to the relatively low production of the Edsel Citation Convertible, the color scheme, and equipment of the car shown in the photos, it became a less difficult task to authenticate this car. Tentative Schedule 5 of Events EOC Jere Gauss, Phil Skinner, and Ty Triplett have studied my Citation convertible and the 1957 Meet in Dearborn Tropicana photograph and have determined that there is ample convincing evidence that the Citation convertible I own is the same car used in the 1957 Tropicana photo shoot. The photo Mike Cowles’ 6 shows one 1958 Citation convertible, two 1957 Fords and one Thunderbird. It is recollection of 1957 unlikely that all these vehicles were privately owned and it is more likely that they were provid- ed by a regional office of the . Ford used separate dealer networks for Ford and Edsel, making it less likely that all vehicles pictured were provided by a single local dealer. Calendar of Events 7 and welcome new It has been possible to determine approximately when the photo shoot took place and deter- members mine that that my Citation convertible could have been in Las Vegas at the time. The photo shoot most likely took place between September 4, 1957, and the end of October 1957 when Green Line Edsel 8-9 the 1958 Fords were introduced to the general public. The Edsel was introduced to the general Action Ads public on September 4 1957, the 1958 Ford was introduced nationwide end of October 1957, and the 1958 Thunderbird was introduced in December of 1957. About The Edsel 10 Continued on Page 3 Owners Club The Big E Page 2

Greetings Friends and Edsel Owners,

It is now starting to clear up here in California from all the much-needed rains. After a long drought and much flooding, most of our reservoirs are once again at capacity - good for another year!

The really good news is that our new Pacer two-door hard top arrived from Florida on February 3, 2017. I noticed back in October, 2016 that this Edsel was going to auction with a scheduled date as January 7, 2017. I held my breath thinking that several other people would take notice and there would be some fierce competition. I called Phil Skinner and he confirmed that this particular car had an excellent history - no rust or damage issues and that it was built at the San Jose assembly plant on November 25, 1957.

Phil met me in Orlando a couple of days before the Rupp Auction and we drove to Ft. Lauderdale where the event was located. Most of the history of the car indicates that it remained in the Southern California area until about two years ago when it ended up in Louisiana. From there, it was purchased from the owner by several successive car dealers who were hoping to make some extra cash along the way. Unfortunately, not one of these dealers cared very much about the car, so when something broke they took the easy way out, such as chopping through the floor to put in a floor shifter, by-passing the starter solenoid and almost burning up the wiring, and so forth.

Fortunately, I was the high bidder and soon made arrangements to have the car shipped back to California. This Pacer has very low miles and is finished in Snow White with Ice Green scallop and roof. It has one repaint and in- cludes the original interior that is in very fine condition, with exception to the seats which will be replaced with the original materials.

Mr. Dave Gilbert , my good friend and EOC mechanic extraordinaire, will be putting the back together again thanks to our parts supplier Jerry Lasseigne. Also, many thanks to Ray and Jeannine Phipps, (who were visiting here from Vancouver, WA, when the transport truck arrived) I now have all the necessary parts to start my restoration on this project.

Fortunately, not much really needs to be brought up to the high standards that this Edsel deserves. With a little elbow grease and some tinkering around, this car will be driven to the Oregon EOC convention in 2018. She is a beauty and will definitely be driven around for all special occasions here in my local area. I am really glad that I waited for just the right car to come along because it was a long and hard search. Many Edsel owners simply do not want to part with their prized possessions and I found this out with over a year and a half of searching. Just moments after the car arrived on our drive way, Jeannine Phipps took this photo of two very elated and happy Edsel owners as the car was parked for inspection.

By the time this Edsel News arrives, many of us will be attending the Laughlin Edsel Meet in Nevada on March 16 - 19, 2017. Robert and I will be flying into the Las Vegas airport and renting a car to drive to this long time gathering of Edsel Owners and good friends. It should be exciting and I am looking forward to the river boat cruise where Jeannine has promised me a dance with Ray's approval. We will be looking at many of the local Edsel cars on display and exchanging ideas and photos of our beloved cars that didn't make the trip. It will be good to see many of the familiar faces who attended our Southwestern Regional meets back in the mid-to late-’90s.

Once again, I am looking forward to our EOC Convention in Dearborn, Michigan. this summer. We are celebrating the Diamond Anniversary of the Edsel this year as many of you know and I certainly hope that you will be able to attend this momentous occasion. I just can't imagine, when I was a boy first looking at the new cars on the show room, that I would be here representing the Edsel and still enjoying the fun and camaraderie of our Club.

Happy trails to all and drive safely,

Michael Cowles

Tropicana Photo Shoot Car — continued from Page 1 During this period Ford Motor Company was engaged in an aggressive promotion of the Edsel as the newest thing on wheels. It seems rea- sonable for the Tropicana to take advantage of this to promote the newest casino in Las Vegas. After October the 1958 Ford products would have been like featured rather than the 1957 models. Also, in the closing months of 1957, it was becoming evident to Ford and the general public that sales of the new were not meeting expectations. The name Edsel was quickly becoming synonymous with failure and it would have been unlikely for the Tropicana or any other business to have used the Edsel to promote its product.

The VIN plate on my Citation Convertible shows a scheduled build date of August 15, 1957, in the Somerville, Massachusetts assembly plant. According to Jere Gauss, delivery of a 1958 Edsel from the Somerville plant to the Western United States between August 15 and September 4 was within the capability of the Ford Motor Company.

The Edsel database maintained by Phil Skinner indicates Nevada state registration records for the calendar year 1957 and gives us the fact that only 48 Edsels statewide were sold by year-end against a nationwide total of 26,681. Furthermore, records from the Los Angeles Dis- trict sales office, which include Nevada records for year-end 1958, show only 32 Citation sold in the Los Angeles district at year's end, against 485 nationwide.

We have not located original customer delivery documentation for my Citation Convertible. The Las Vegas dealer of record for the 1958 Edsel was Desert Edsel in Las Vegas. Was this car sold by year's end? We don't really know. But numbers are so thin as to suggest there probably wasn't more than one Citation convertible ever delivered to the state of Nevada in 1957.

My Citation convertible bears the Todkill Edsel dealer badge. Todkill Edsel was located at the current site of the Stratosphere Casino, 2000 South 5th Street (now Las Vegas Blvd). However, Todkill began selling Edsels in 1959, which leads us to speculate that the Tropicana photo shoot car remained unsold in the Desert Edsel inventory until it went out of business and was eventually transferred to Todkill who badged the car with its name and sold the car as a “late model demonstrator.”

The equipment and color play a role in authenticating the car. The Citation Convertible was the top-of-the-line flagship and was often mar- keted with a premium set of options including the station-seeking radio with power antenna. Both the car used in the 1957 Photo shoot and my car had a manual antenna. The rocker panel moldings were more common, but both the car used in the 1957 Photo shoot and my car had them. Spinner wheel covers were options that could easily be changed so they can't be used to reliably authenticate the car. The car in the photo shoot was equipped with bumper guards. My car, as I found it in 1986, was missing its front bumper guards, but the bumpers showed evidence of once having the bumper guards on them. The front license plate bracket was provided by the Edsel factory on automo- biles delivered to states requiring a front plate. Nevada Revised Statute NRS 482.275 requiring display of a front license plate became ef- fective in 1959. The front license plate bracket was absent from both the 1958 Edsel pictured in the photo shoot and my Citation when I bought in 1986. It is likely that the Edsel I own was originally delivered to a state that did not require use of a front license plate.

Is my Citation convertible the one used in the Tropicana photo shoot? At this point we do not have conclusive evidence, but there are many details that lead us to believe it very well could be the same car.

Jim Popp 1940—2016

We were recently informed of the passing of a well-known Edsel enthusiast, Jim Popp, of Maryland. He passed away at the age of 76 on December 5th, 2016.

In December of 1959, Jim purchased a brand new Edsel, a Sahara Beige 1960 Ranger 4 door sedan, that he drove regularly. After retiring the car, he kept it, and restored it to perfection many years later.

He had a large collection of Edsels, along with Mercurys and Lincolns. Jim was a perfectionist and had his cars restored into very high quality show cars. He was very competitive at car meets and his cars usually won first place.

He was also instrumental in getting SMS to reproduce the original fabrics for Edsels.

Jim was often asked to be a judge at Edsel meets due to his extensive knowledge about Edsels. He was known to share his knowledge freely to anyone who was interested in learning about Edsels.

Many thanks to EOC member, Bob Baer, of Maryland for passing along this information. The Big E Page 4

The Big E Page 6 The way it was: Looking Back at to 1957 Part 2 By Mike Cowles (Part I was the “From the President’s Desk” message in the January 2017 issue)

As I stood there dumbfounded and about to faint, I noticed that the heavy curtains high above my head started to shake and begin to shutter to a close! The music stopped and there was a brief pause as I gained my composure and looked at my two partners. There was a scuffle outside the curtain which was now fully finished closing and I could hear that something had gone wrong with one of the cameras on stage. It was just enough time for me to begin pulling myself together while the technicians were scrambling to correct the situation.

After a brief pause everything was back to normal and the music started up once again and in plenty of time for me to remember my routine. I was relieved as I took off with a fire under my seat and I tapped and danced around that floor like there was no tomorrow! My partners were close behind as the flood lights were turning colors like the vintage Christmas trees that were all the rage back then!

Finally, it was over... and there was a standing ovation as the news crew began introducing us and the brand new Oldsmobiles. I was told to be sure to say what I thought about the new Oldsmobile, using adjectives like, "Oh, it's REALLY NEAT," and it looks like a "ROCKET SHIP", and how "COOL" the interior was and especially, "I WISH MY DAD WOULD GET ONE!" Yeah, right! I wish my dad would go back to that Edsel dealership! So, I told him that I wanted to see more of the Edsel down the street.

Mom and dad were proud beyond words. I was the little king of entertainment and on LOCAL T.V. Yes, they knew who I was when we entered the other showrooms to look at the cars. After all, I still had on the little bow tie and was dressed in my wool coat. It was like being a movie star! So much attention for such a little fellow and I soaked it in. As far as the entertainment went, no one noticed that I was frozen in fear since the tech- nicians were frantically fixing the machinery. It was all okay.

Next, it was off to the Cadillac dealership. Upon entering the doors and the spectacular displays that were presented, I remember the most beau- tiful women who were on the stage introducing the different Cadillacs. Oh, those Cadillacs were so dreamy with huge tail fins and colors to in- spire every kid and adult alike. While my practical dad was looking at the four door sedans, I caught a glimpse of the most dreamy, utterly fan- tastic metallic blue Brougham slowly spinning around on a platform just three feet off the floor. An elegant, young woman, wearing a white sequined dress with elbow length white gloves, would open the door to present the glorious interior fitted with blue and silver brocade cloth and lamb’s wool tinted blue shag carpeting. She would glide her hand over the pillar-less hard top, running her fingers sensuously over the brushed stainless top and explaining that no details were left untouched, the car was perfect. I was so impressed that I stood there, jaw -dropped, gawking at one of the most momentous occasions of my life... and even today, it still remains with me as vividly as it did so many years ago.

Next, the Pontiacs, Buicks and . But what about the Edsel?! It was getting late in the day and my father had not made up his mind yet what he wanted to see next. This was FREE entertainment, and I already had enough brochures to fill any young boy’s treasure chest and I need to sort through it all. Of course I stayed up all evening long, thumbing through the colorful pages and finally going to bed late that night and dreaming about what all young boys would — driving one of those glorious machines when I grow up!

Next day, it was off to the Fords, Mercurys and finally the Edsel. I remember the endless up and down that the Ford hard top convertible made through its routine during the entire day. The Mercurys were just too bizarre for my taste at the time. I remember a Turnpike Cruiser with the tuck- and-roll dash board, sporting some rather odd-looking dash pod designs. It seemed confusing and overwrought with too many gizmos!

Then, we were off to the Edsel Dealership. Yes, the "ONE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU!" It seemed that the Edsel had already been introduced, so the crowds were not as busy as the other car displays. There was a beautiful white and black Citation convertible with red and white interior on a rotating stand similar to the Cadillac display.

Lots of catchy signs with many impressive slogans were all around the room with phrases like: "Just Above the Lowest and Below the Highest." "Newest Thing on Wheels!" I was more interested in the car than I was about the catchy slogans. Soon, a salesman, no doubt noticing my father just behind me, asked, "Well, son, what do you think?" I replied that I thought it was a neat car and liked it very much. Then, the salesman quipped, "How about that crazy transmission, huh?" I looked inside and just as the slogan stated, it was like "Falling in Love!" Yes those buttons were a kid’s dream! Like something from Buck Rogers and just begging for me to reach out and touch them. "Go ahead!" He was no doubt more interested in getting my dad in for a better look - like dangling a sardine over a sea bass! Wow, I thought, and then I did reach out to feel those lighted buttons. It WAS like falling in love. The new car smell was intoxicating and the rotating drum in the center of the dash pod was simply dreamy. I did get a chance to sit in the front seat and was quite impressed with the beautiful and stylish interior. There was a brief discussion that my dad had with the salesman on the floor, and then we mingled with the other Edsels on display. I asked my dad, "Can we?!" And, I will never, ever, forget what he said at that moment: "This must be the UGLIEST car I have EVER seen!" We made our way out the door and headed back to the old Ford wagon with dreams of beautiful cars and pretty dressed up models, and wondering what it would be like next year?

So much for my two days at the 1957-58 car dealerships: a time to remember and an experience that I will never forget! Volume L, Issue 2 Page 7 Edsel Calendar of Events
