MADAGASCAR: The Wonders of the “8th Continent” A Tropical Birding Custom Trip October 20—November 6, 2016 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos taken during this trip by Ken Behrens Annotated bird list by Jerry Connolly TOUR SUMMARY Madagascar has long been a core destination for Tropical Birding, and with the opening of a satellite office in the country several years ago, we further solidified our expertise in the “Eighth Continent.” This custom trip followed an itinerary similar to that of our main set-departure tour. Although this trip had a definite bird bias, it was really a general natural history tour. We took our time in observing and photographing whatever we could find, from lemurs to chameleons to bizarre invertebrates. Madagascar is rich in wonderful birds, and we enjoyed these to the fullest. But its mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are just as wondrous and accessible, and a trip that ignored them would be sorely missing out. We also took time to enjoy the cultural riches of Madagascar, the small villages full of smiling children, the zebu carts which seem straight out of the Middle Ages, and the ingeniously engineered rice paddies. If you want to come to Madagascar and see it all… come with Tropical Birding! Madagascar is well known to pose some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, but we enjoyed perfectly smooth sailing on this tour. We stayed in the most comfortable hotels available at each stop on the itinerary, including some that have just recently opened, and savored some remarkably good food, which many people rank as the best Madagascar Custom Tour October 20-November 6, 2016 they have ever had on any birding tour. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. With an itinerary set in one of South Africa’s premier birding provinces, the Limpopo Province, we were getting ready for a birding extravaganza. The forests of Magoebaskloof would be our first stop, spending a day and a half in the area and targeting forest special after forest special as well as tricky range-restricted species such as Short-clawed Lark and Gurney’s Sugarbird. Afterwards we would descend the eastern escarpment and head into Kruger National Park, where we would make our way to the northern sections. These included Punda Maria, Pafuri, and the Makuleke Concession – a mouthwatering birding itinerary that was sure to deliver. A pair of Woodland Kingfishers in the fever tree forest along the Limpopo River Detailed Report Day 1, 24th February 2019 – Transfer to Magoebaskloof We set out from Johannesburg after breakfast on a clear Sunday morning. The drive to Polokwane took us just over three hours. A number of birds along the way started our trip list; these included Hadada Ibis, Yellow-billed Kite, Southern Black Flycatcher, Village Weaver, and a few brilliant European Bee-eaters. -

MADAGASCAR TRIP REPORT Aug.-Sept 2012 John Clark ([email protected]) Our London friends, Dick and Liz Turner, Mary Ward-Jackson and I spent almost 4 weeks in Madagascar. Our primary focus was Birds, But we were also interested in nature more Broadly and culture. The tour was excellently prepared By our guide, Fanomezantsoa Andrianirina (Fano) – who was a perfect guide as well as Being great fun to travel with. The trip was excellent and we ended up seeing 122 of the endemic (and endemic Breeding) Birds of Madagascar, plus 54 non-endemics. Fano was not only an excellent Bird-guide himself, But he had lined up local guides in most of the locations – most of whom were terrific (especially, perhaps, Jaqui in Ampijoroa). Fano is doing much to help develop these local guides as more experienced and confident bird-guides in their own right. The logistics and places to stay were excellent – well, as excellent as an inevitaBle dependence on Madagascar Air permits! (They don’t call it Mad. Air for nothing; it is quite the worst airline I have ever had to use!). Fano’s drivers were also terrific (and keen budding birders!) So our main advice, for those planning a birding (or indeed broader nature/wildlife) trip to Mad. is to use Fano if at all possible. He was totally professional, accurate, dogged, scientifically knowledgeaBle about the Bird, mammals and other species and became a good friend. We explored all of these and more during our 25-day adventure across the country. Highlights were many and included Orange River Francolin, thousands of Cape Gannets, multiple Secretarybirds, stunning Knysna Turaco, Ground Woodpecker, Botha’s Lark, Bush Blackcap, Cape Parrot, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Caracal, Oribi and Giant Bullfrog, along with spectacular scenery, great food and excellent accommodation throughout. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Despite havoc-wreaking weather that delayed flights on the other side of the world, everyone managed to arrive (just!) in South Africa for the start of our keenly-awaited tour. We began our 25-day cross-country exploration with a drive along Zaagkuildrift Road. This unassuming stretch of dirt road is well-known in local birding circles and can offer up a wide range of species thanks to its variety of habitats – which include open grassland, acacia woodland, wetlands and a seasonal floodplain. Cape Weaver Is Considered a Winter Visitor to the Coastal Belt (Cyrus & Robson 1980; Quickel- Berge 1989)

In both KwaZulu-Natal and the Transkei, the Cape Weaver is considered a winter visitor to the coastal belt (Cyrus & Robson 1980; Quickel- berge 1989). Breeding: Breeding is in the wet season. In the winter-rainfall region of the southwestern Cape Province (Zone 4), breeding is primarily August–November (cf. Winterbottom 1968a), but appears to be still earlier (July–October) in the northwestern Cape Province (Zone 3). In the eastern summer-rainfall regions, breeding is chiefly September–January, with marginal dif- ferences in timing between Zones 6–8. Peak breeding is October–December in the Transvaal (Zone 6) but about one month later in KwaZulu- Natal (Zone 7), a difference which is also found in published information (Dean 1971; Tarboton et al. 1987b). Interspecific relationships: It is often as- sociated with Red Bishops Euplectes orix at both roosting and Cape Weaver breeding sites in reedbeds, and it will also flock and roost with Kaapse Wewer other Ploceus and Euplectes species, and with European Star- lings Sturnus vulgaris. In addition it may forage in mixed Ploceus capensis flocks at abundant food sources, particularly with other seedeaters, including sparrows and canaries. Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Observations of naturalised plants and animals will also be considered. Biodiversity Observations will also publish a variety of other interesting or relevant biodiversity material: reports of projects and conferences, annotated checklists for a site or region, specialist bibliographies, book reviews and any other appropriate material.
