English book owners in the seventeenth century: a work in progress listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: • What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? • How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? • How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate. -

The chapters correspond with four distinct periods in Baddeley’s life: the First World War 1914-19 (Chapter 1), Melanesia, 1932-47 (Chapter 2), the suffragan bishopric of Whitby, 1947-54 (Chapter 3), and the diocesan bishopric of Blackburn 1954-60 (Chapters 4 and 5). -

THE ARCHDEACONS’ FORUM for the Church of England and the Church in Wales Archdeacons’ News Bulletin no. 39 December 2018 from Norman Boakes Archdeacons’ National Development Officer Advent speaks to us of judgment, which tends not to be a popular topic even in churches. This is understandable, because all too often we see examples of people judging other people in a way which appals us. But we cannot avoid the message of judgment, either in the lectionary readings in November, or in Advent. We are reminded that we do need to be able to account for our actions, the way we live and what we do. The problem is that it is too easy to judge others; the real heart of Advent is opening up our own lives to the searching inspection of God’s love. The recent endless arguments on Brexit have seen all too many politicians, political commentators and ordinary people simply having a go at those who disagree with them, in a way which shows an unwillingness to listen and a deliberate vilifying of those of different views. We have lost a deep concern for the truth, a sense of generosity to others, especially those we disagree with, and any sense that we are all God’s children, loved by God and precious to God. None of us knows what will happen in the next few weeks. I suspect we are in for some surprises yet. But if we continue as we are, the quality of all our lives will be diminished. It might benefit all of us to place ourselves under God’s judgment, trusting in God’s love for us, and opening ourselves up to God’s ways of truth, generosity and love. -

Abstract The role of Anglican army chaplains in inter-war church and society will be examined and judgements made on the extent to which their ideas and actions were influenced by their war- time experiences, leading to an impact on the inter-war Anglican Church and British society. The extent to which the intervention of the Church of England in social and industrial issues in the inter-war years was shaped by the activities and opinions of former chaplains will be examined using examples such as as in the work of the Industrial Christian Fellowship and Toc H. The significance of former chaplains in rituals of remembrance and the development of pacifism will be assessed and their contribution to discussions on ecclesiastical controversies such as Prayer Book revision and unity will be analysed. -

ABSTRACT British army chaplaincy, until more recent times, is a subject which has been sadly overlooked by historians. This thesis seeks to help fill that gap; it is a study which explores the origins and development of the early Army Chaplains’ Department. The most significant factor in determining the effectiveness, or otherwise, of army chaplaincy in the latter half of the eighteenth century, can be seen in the way that civilian incumbents served in their parishes, or to be more precise, were often absent from their parishes except through the services of a curate, thus before 1796, regimental chaplains were often absent from their duties. It is clear that the army, especially some of its commanders, valued chaplains as can be demonstrated by the future Duke of Wellington, asking for more quality chaplains.
