How We Met Ed Smith on Vikram Seth My dad was Vikram’s English teacher at Tonbridge School in the 1980s, but the first time I met Vikram was in 1994, just after a A Suitable Boy came out. He visited Tonbridge to give a reading and stayed the night with our family. I was sixteen and we didn’t talk much. He spent most of the time talking to my father. Six years later, in 2000, we met again in Australia. He was in Perth for work and I was there playing cricket. I rang his hotel and said, “Vikram, it’s Edward Smith, Jonathan Smith’s son.” We met up and spent the afternoon chatting, and had dinner that evening. We talked for hours about books and music. It was wonderful. I’d left university a couple of years before and I missed talking about ideas. Vikram’s a serious person, but he’s also great company, intelligent, creative and sometimes very funny. We only see each other from time to time but reading Vikram’s books, listening to him, getting to know him – it’s all taught me a lot. Questions 1.
