A Year to Remember a year TO DECEMBER 2012 remember As 2012 comes to an end, ushering in a brand new year of possibilities, WLIW21 reflects on the indispensable support from members like you. Here’s a look back at some memorable WLIW21 moments from 2012.The year began on a high note with a second season of Downton Abbey and a new weekly series from Bill Moyers. Great Performances brought us the usual lineup of extraordinary talent from Tony Bennett to The Phantom of the Opera, while Nature continued its 30th anniversary season with Raccoon Nation and Cracking the Koala Code. American Masters had an outstanding year with a portrait of Johnny Carson, and Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. provided another audience favorite, Finding Your Roots, which explored the intersecting genealogy of notable Americans. Local programming continued to impress with returning series Live from the Artists Den, Consuelo Mack WealthTrack, and Treasures of New York, which recently showcased its first Long Island “treasure,” the Amagansett Life-Saving Station in Ocean Keeper. MetroFocus provided New Yorkers with a consistent source of local news and insight now on-air twice a month and online. The MetroFocus news crew also worked tirelessly during Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter to provide vital information about the storm’s aftermath. We’ve been there for you this year, and you, in turn, have been there for us. When proposed public television funding cuts took center stage during the first presidential debate, tens of thousands of you in the region spoke up online and through social media to tell us how much public television means to you. And your contributions throughout this year have helped us create the programs of consequence that we present on-air and online each and every day. As we look ahead to the new year, everyone at WLIW21 continues to be committed to providing Long Island with exceptional programming and community service. Thank you for making it all possible. • Multiple Grammy-Winning Recording Artist Natalie Cole Was Just 8 Years
Multiple Grammy-winning recording artist Natalie Cole was just 8 years old when her father, legendary crooner Nat King Cole, recorded his first album in Spanish, scoring an unexpected international smash in 1958. Her father’s foreign-language success was a culturally captivating experience for little Natalie, who got to travel outside the country for the first time with her famous father. She vividly recalls a trip to Mexico during which she saw her first piñata, posed for pictures “as a señorita” in folkloric dress, and most memorably, witnessed first- hand the adulation and esteem that Latin American fans showed for the King, a pioneering African-American superstar. “They loved, loved, loved him,” she recalls. “And I loved what he loved. So I fell in love with the culture.” Now, decades later, the accomplished R&B and jazz vocalist breaks new ground of her own with her first Spanish-language album, “Natalie Cole En Español,” released June 25 on Verve/Universal. In this, her first new studio album in five years, Natalie revisits the rich repertoire of ageless Latin standards that once opened new vistas for her father. The 12 lushly orchestrated tracks, produced by Rudy Perez, Billboard’s Latin Music Producer Of The Decade, features Natalie’s distinctive take on three classics from her father’s catalog, plus several other carefully chosen selections from the Latin American Songbook. The album features a haunting father/daughter duet on the sensual bolero “Acércate Mas,” employing the same recording techniques used for their posthumous pairing on 1991’s “Unforgettable,” which won Record of the Year for the singer and producer David Foster.

Biography “Like Elton John, Hanlon has the ability to focus with laser-like precision on the melodic essence of a song and rework it to find new dramatism. Hanlon doesn’t sing, and you could think the piano would limit him to instrumental albums, but that isn’t the case. Like Chris Botti, trumpeter for Sting, or rock guitarist Ottmar Liebert, Hanlon brings a broad range of guest artists to create fascinating albums. -The Houston Chronicle Chart topping pianist/composer/arranger and Billboard and Emmy-nominee Arthur Hanlon is the single most recognizable name in Latin instrumental music today. Born in Detroit to Irish American parents, Hanlon found his calling in Latin music, becoming the only pianist to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Latin charts and the only pianist to achieve multiple hits on Billboard’s Latin charts. A virtuoso with a master’s degree in piano performance from Manhattan School of Music, Hanlon plays a distinctive blend of Detroit street, classical virtuosity and Latin beats and he has recorded singles with superstars like Luis Fonsi, Laura Pausini, Marc Anthony, Juanes, Chocquibtown, Prince Royce, Myriam Hernandez, Sergio Vallín, Ricardo Montaner and most recently, Ozuna. Now, Arthur releases “Cómo Suena el Piano” along with Cuban trio Orishas, and produced by Grammy winner Andres Castro. The track, a mix of Cuban son and blues, and its video filmed in Cuba, are the inspiration for the “Un Gringo en La Habana” tour that kicked off October 11, 2019 in Miami. “Como Suena El Piano Remix” was released in May, 2020 and features new Puerto Rican superstar Lunay.
