Eddie : Mascotte d’Iron Maiden et personnage fantastique probablement le plus connu du heavy metal. Dans la tournée World Slavery Tour, Eddie incarne un Pharaon préoccupé par sa propre mort et la vie dans l’au-delà. World Slavery Tour 1984-85 : Tournée internationale de spectacles suivant la sortie de l’album Powerslave. Première tournée d’Iron Maiden avec les éléments visuels de grande envergure qui font aujourd’hui la marque de commerce du groupe, tels une scène sur plusieurs paliers et des apparitions d’Eddie toujours plus impressionnantes. Cette légendaire tournée de 197 spectacles avait pour thèmes l’Égypte ancienne, l’esclavage, la mort et la vie après la mort. Live After Death : Album concert enregistré à Long Beach Arena, CA, pendant la tournée World Slavery Tour. Cet album connaîtra un franc succès en particulier au Canada et aux États-Unis. Power Slaves : Groupe hommage à Iron Maiden fondé par Pierre-Étienne Drolet à Québec en 1997. Power Slaves s’est bien établi au Québec depuis ses débuts au d’Auteuil et à Ex-Machina, puis en tant que pionnier des soirées hommage à l’Agora du Vieux Port de Québec pour finalement performer sur scène avec Paul Dianno (Premier chanteur d’Iron Maiden) en 2006. C’est en 2008 que Power Slaves a commencé à étudier la faisabilité du Projet MADE IN IRON. Projet MADE IN IRON : Projet de spectacle à grand déploiement démarré en 2009 par Power Slaves et ayant pour objectif la reconstitution du World Slavery Tour dans tous ses excès. MADE IN IRON - Phase 1 : La phase 1 présentait la première version de la scène sur 4 étages, ainsi que le décor égyptien, les costumes d’époque et un Eddie mobile se déplaçant sur scène et mesurant 12 pieds. Le lancement de la Phase 1 a eu lieu au Medley à Montréal en 2009. MADE IN IRON - Phase II : La Phase II présente ajourd’hui une scène gigantesque (les mêmes dimensions que celle d’Iron Maiden en 1984), ainsi qu’un Eddie de 25 pieds de haut, et plusieurs autres incréments par rapport à la Phase 1. Power Slaves devient MADE IN IRON : Le groupe Power Slaves abandonnera ce nom le 1er janvier 2013 pour devenir définitivement MADE IN IRON. Même groupe, même spectacle, meilleur nom. En effet, le groupe Power Slaves était à l’affiche ce soir au Capitole de Québec pour nous faire revivre, en intégralité, la performance live du spectacle du célèbre groupe Iron Maiden, Live after death, tiré de la tournée World Slavery Tour. Le défi était de taille : recréer l’immense scène, aménagée sur 4 niveaux et mesurant 40 pieds de long sur 25 de haut, de cette tournée mémorable. Je peux vous confirmer que le défi fut réalisé et haut la main. Le magnifique décor de style égyptien était tout simplement à couper le souffle !! Aucun espace de la scène n’était laissé libre. Les effets de lumières accompagnant le tout ont réellement permis de créer une ambiance spéciale. Évidemment, les costumes d’époques aussi, puisque nous avons eu droit aux fameux lycras extra moulants, les ptits bas aux genoux, les espadrilles Adidas et les bandeaux serre-tête pour tenir toutes ses longues chevelures en place. La totale quoi !! La foule très réceptive dès l’arrivée du band sur les planches, ne s’est jamais lacée d’applaudir et de chanter avec Philippe Harvey, alias Bruce Dickinson. Que ce soit les plus vieux, nostalgiques de leur adolescence, ou la jeune génération de fans de Iron Maiden, peu de gens présents ne connaissaient pas au moins un des succès interprétés ce soir. Définitivement, la set list de ce show comprend plusieurs classiques des plus connus tels The trooper, The number of the Beast, Run to the hill et bien entendu, Phantom of the Opera effectuée durant le rappel. On aurait quasiment dit un best of des plus grands succès en carrière du groupe britannique. Aussi, mention spéciale ici à Philippe Harvey qui, par sa voix très ressemblante au chanteur originel, nous fait presque imaginer le groupe live en vrai lorsque l’on écoute la performance les yeux fermés. MADE IN IRON – Dossier de presse 2012 p.4 Et que serait un spectacle hommage à Iron Maiden sans leur mascotte Eddie ? De ce côté, les spectateurs en ont eu pour leur argent. En effet, les membres de Power Slaves, en plus de recréer tout le décor, ont aussi donné vie à non pas un, mais bien deux Eddie !! Le premier mesurant 12 pieds de haut a fait une brève apparition durant une des chansons, tandis que le deuxième mesurant 25 pieds et doté de bras mobiles, fut intégré au back ground de la scène pour les derniers hits de la soirée. Bref, une magnifique soirée inoubliable autant pour le public que pour les membres de Power Slaves. Si vous n’avez jamais eu la chance de les voir live, je vous les recommande fortement. Avec l’argent amassé ce soir, la phase III de leur projet Made in Iron promet d’être encore plus incroyable ! C’est tout un défi que Philippe Harvey (alias Bruce Dickinson), P-E Drolet (alias Adrian Smith), Fred Bergeron (alias Dave Murray), Bruno Tremblay (alias Steve Harris) et Maxime Beauséjour (alias Nicko Mcbrain) ont su relever. C’est avec brio qu’ils ont reproduit intégralement les décors, costumes et pièces musicales de la tournée Live After Death d’Iron Maiden. On a ainsi eu le plaisir d’entendre Two Minutes to Midnight, The Trooper, The Number of The Beast, Iron Maiden, Phantom of The Opera, Run to The Hills, Revelation, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner et plusieurs autres grands succès de Maiden. Tout était parfait, un bon son, des éclairages appropriés et… ah oui, j’oubliais, Eddie qui est venu faire son tour sur scène au grand plaisir des spectateurs. Qui est Eddie? C’est la mascotte d’Iron Maiden. Bref, un spectacle bien rodé avec d’excellents musiciens et tout ça devant un public de connaisseurs qui savaient par coeur toutes les paroles de la majorité des pièces. Et bien, cette vie après la mort existe bel et bien sous la forme de ‘Live After Death’ qui a repris forme en ce soir d’Halloween 2010 au Capitole de Québec avec une performance magistrale des musiciens de Powerslaves. L’intégral de cette performance historique de Iron Maiden lors de l’une des plus grosses tournées ‘métal’ jamais organisées fut un délice pour les nombreux amateurs s’étant déplacés au centre-ville, certains déguisés pour les circonstances.

    Iron Maiden – Live After Death DVD Review By Michael Makuch 3/9/08 I just purchased a blast from the past in the form of Iron Maiden’s “Live After Death” DVD. For the first time in over 20 years this live show documents Maiden’s seminal Powerslave Tour. I used to have a VHS copy many years ago and I haven’t seen the show for many years so it is a treat to be able to own this treasure of a concert film in a high quality DVD format. In fact, this is the first time this concert has been available in any format since it was originally released in the mid 80’s. “Live After Death” is a 2 DVD set and is affordably priced at around $15. The first disc is the original concert while disc 2 contains documentaries, rare live footage, a picture gallery and two promo videos from the Powerslave album. The set beautifully reproduces the graphics and contains a decent booklet, which is a rarity in most DVD packages. We’ve all come a long way from the time I found a busted cassette of “Live After Death” (no doubt tossed from a car in a fit of disgust with regard to the thin tape used in ‘double length’ single cassettes and their ability to bind easily with in-dash cassette players), that needed some reconstructive work that required a risky tape transplant to another tape body and razor sharp splicing to resurrect the music contained therein, to the point where I now possess said concert on CD audio and, now, DVD video formats I couldn’t have conceived of in the old days! The music itself, of course, is timeless.

Throughout its existence, heavy metal has been mired with controversies; critics slighted the music by shunning it off as being riddled with overblown adolescent theatrics, and conservative groups have accused the genre of being provocative due to its evil lyrical content. Inspite of all those adversities, heavy metal has held its stance as one of the most consistent forms of rock music. Metal music, through its efforts has reinstated the “ancient Indo-European spirit of vir”1 through a Romantic, Faustian form of music culture. This has staggered the general concept of mainstream music and has hence, since long, remained controversial. Heavy metal has never been popular with the mainstream masses, primarily due to the nature of the music. Amongst other things, lyrical content of the songs is one thing that is largely frowned upon and often considered to be one of the primary reasons why metal music has never struck a chord with the masses. But such allegations, while partly true, remain biased to a large extent.

Aqui propomos tecer uma reflexão geral acerca de diversos aspectos versados na capa do álbum intitulado Powerslave, da banda Iron Maiden, como a relação entre produção, consumo e apropriação de elementos da cultura do Antigo Egito pela indústria cultural da década de 1980. Também debatemos a ressignificação desses elementos para funcionar no contexto fantasioso da ilustração. Por fim, abordamos a relação da morte com o rock e, finalmente, como as funções específicas da capa como proteção do LP e a sua funcionalidade como suporte visual. Here we propose to weave a reflection, in a very general way about a number of aspects on the cover of the album titled Powerslave, by the musical group Iron Maiden, as the relationship between production, consumption and appropriation of the old elements of Ancient Egyptian culture by the cultural industry of the 1980's. We also discuss the redefinition of these elements to operate in the context of fantasy illustration. Then, we approach the relation between death and rock'n'roll, and finally the specific functions of the cover as a protection and its functionality as visual support.

    Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Canção – ISSN 2238-1198 Natal, n.3, jan-jun 2013. www.rbec.ect.ufrn.br Historical Themes in Iron Maiden Songs (Part I): From the Cavemen to the Vikings Lauro Meller1 [email protected] Abstract: This paper intends to deepen some of the ideas put forward in a previous study of ours, “Historical Characters and Facts in Iron Maiden Songs: a journey from Pre-History to The Second World War” (MELLER, 2005). Our aim is to demonstrate that the lyrics to Maiden’s songs stand out in the Heavy Metal scenario (whose lyrics usually have as subject matters Satanism, sex, drinking, and drug abuse). Avoiding these commonplace topics, Steve Harris, the main songwriter in the group, invests in more elaborate lyrics, either inspired by literary works or about historical themes. In fact, there are so many songs in the band’s discography that deal with historical themes that it is even possible to draw a timeline that stems from Pre-History and reaches The Second World War. While our analytical approach tends to focus on the lyrics, it will not ignore some aspects that are crucial to a better understanding of songs, namely the strictly musical elements (melody, harmony, rhythm, arrangement, etc.), and performance. SAN MANUEL AMPHITHEATER FRIDAY – SEPTEMBER 13 WITH VERY SPECIAL GUESTS: MEGADETH ANTHRAX TESTAMENT SABATON OVERKILL (Los Angeles / Monday – April 8, 2013) IRON MAIDEN continue their MAIDEN ENGLAND WORLD TOUR into 2013 with a welcome return to the U.S.A., stopping off to play some select shows en-route to Latin America where they will once again headline at the legendary Rock In Rio Festival, Brazil, their show there having recently sold-out to 70,000 fans in just a couple of hours. Following the hugely successful opening leg of the MAIDEN ENGLAND TOUR 2012, Maiden’s most extensive tour of North America for many years, the band wanted visit even more U.S. cities where their fans hadn’t had a chance to see them play for a very long time, so utilizing the journey to Brazil seemed an ideal opportunity to make this happen. Very special guests on all the dates will be Megadeth*. Included in these seven selected U.S. shows is a very special event at San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA. THE BATTLE OF SAN BERNARDINO will take place on Friday 13 th September. Anthrax, Testament, Sabaton and Overkill will join Maiden and their special guests Megadeth for this performance only, making for a big, loud and exciting day out for Metal fans in Southern California.
