    Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

Bold, honest, intelligent and very funny, his memoir is an up-close look inside the life, heart, and mind of one of the most unique and interesting men in the world; a true icon of rock.     Iron Maiden – Live After Death DVD Review By Michael Makuch 3/9/08 I just purchased a blast from the past in the form of Iron Maiden’s “Live After Death” DVD. For the first time in over 20 years this live show documents Maiden’s seminal Powerslave Tour. I used to have a VHS copy many years ago and I haven’t seen the show for many years so it is a treat to be able to own this treasure of a concert film in a high quality DVD format. In fact, this is the first time this concert has been available in any format since it was originally released in the mid 80’s. “Live After Death” is a 2 DVD set and is affordably priced at around $15. The first disc is the original concert while disc 2 contains documentaries, rare live footage, a picture gallery and two promo videos from the Powerslave album. The set beautifully reproduces the graphics and contains a decent booklet, which is a rarity in most DVD packages. We’ve all come a long way from the time I found a busted cassette of “Live After Death” (no doubt tossed from a car in a fit of disgust with regard to the thin tape used in ‘double length’ single cassettes and their ability to bind easily with in-dash cassette players), that needed some reconstructive work that required a risky tape transplant to another tape body and razor sharp splicing to resurrect the music contained therein, to the point where I now possess said concert on CD audio and, now, DVD video formats I couldn’t have conceived of in the old days! The music itself, of course, is timeless.

    BLAZE BAYLEY CAESAR’S PALACE, MONDAY 5TH MARCH ‘This is a song about how machines are going to take over the world. Because when that happens, there will be a Second Messiah!’ Like, yeah Blaze, whatever man. Let’s get this straight: I don’t like Iron Maiden. I can’t hear that name without thinking of widdly guitar solos, pompous over-the-top lyrics, grown men in shorts, Dungeons & Dragons, scampi flavour Nik-Naks, sacrificial virgins - you get the picture. So what am I doing at a gig whose main attraction is Blaze Bayley, the man who fronted Maiden through what is considered to have been their worst years? Well, there is the added bonus of Risactonia and Black Atom, two bands that are always good to watch. And I have been informed that Blaze’s solo material sounds nothing like that of his previous employers. Anyway, who can resist a good metal gig? This is Aberdeen after all, a lonely outpost that plays host to such diverse names as David Gray and Coldplay. It’s just too good an opportunity to miss. By the time Blaze come on, a steady crowd has gathered, largely made up of old Maiden fans, who seem to crawl out of the woodwork whenever such events come around, plus a good number of metal kids. Even Fudge decide to grace us with their presence. Black seems to be the colour of choice tonight. The band are dressed in black. The stage is black. And I am wearing, well, white for some reason. The other thing I should mention about the stage is the huge drum-kit that takes up half of it.
