Common names: Ateso: Eloa Kwamba: Kesuba, kisuba Luganda: Kirundu Lugi- shu: Lulundu Lugwe: Mulundulundu Lunyuli: Musende Luo A: Olivaa Luo L: Elwa Madi: Ripi Runyankore: Mumaka Rutoro: Muhere, mbondo. Ecology: A forest tree with 3 varieties not clearly distinguished, especially when young. While one is found largely in wooded grassland, the others grow in rain forest, wetter forest, riverine and semi-swamp forests west to Sierra Leone, into southern Sudan and south to Zaire and Angola. It grows in all regions of Uganda except the North Eastern, 1,350-1,700 m. Uses: Timber (veneer, beer canoes), medicine (leaves, roots), bark cloth. Description: A magnificent deciduous tree of the forest canopy, often 20 m, up to 40 m, the crown rounded, branchlets drooping. A large tree may have a tall clear bole with some buttresses at the base. BARK: smooth, pale grey, marked with lenticel dots and ring marks. When cut thin cream latex drips out, becoming darker. LEAVES: variable, usually oval 5-16 cm x 4-11 cm, the upper half often widest to a blunt or pointed tip, the base unequal and rounded. Saplings and coppice shoots have long narrow leaves, the edge toothed—but rare in mature leaves. Leaves are rough, papery with stiff hairs above but softer below. FLOWERS: small male flowers, yellow-green, in clusters about 1.5 cm across, growing just below leaves. Female flowers in disc- or kidney- shaped heads to 3 cm across. FRUIT: bright red, dull and furry, 1.5 cm long, the swollen receptacle contains just one seed. -

Gastropods is an important role in the decomposition process of litter, especially the detritus Gastropods. The presence and diversity of Gastropods is largely determined by their habitat conditions. The mangrove ecosystem in Lambur Village is currently experiencing environmental degradation. This research aims to find out the diversity of species of Gastropods and know the characteristics of Gastropod’s habitat seen from physical and chemical factor of invironment in the mangrove ecosystem of Lambur Village Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency. This research is descriptive explorative, with station determination using purposive sampling. The study sites were divided into three research stations. Gastropods located on the surface of the substrate and attached to the root of the mangrove plant are taken manually by hand collection technique, while the gastropod located inside the substrate is dug collection technique using a shovel. Environmental parameters measured include substrate type, temperature, pH, and salinity. The results obtained were analyzed using index of species diversity and dominance index. Gastropods were found to total 539 individuals including 21 species of 15 genera, which belong to 8 families. The index of the diversity of the three stations was categorized by medium with respectively values of 2,461, 1,893, and 2,533, while the dominant index of the three stations was categorized as low with respectively values of 0.106, 0.201, and 0.096. -

Tas 7000 {<eceived I May /990 The life history of the Short-tailed Shearwater Puffinus tenuirostris has been well documented since it first came to the attention of naturalists. Approximately 23 million birds breed in about 250 colonies in southeastern Australia from September to April. The Short-tailed Shearwater commences to breed when 4 to 15 years. During their completed lifetimes 27 per cent of all individuals produce no young and 19 per cent only one chick. Mortality is age-related with the median survival time for breeding being 9.3 years after first breeding. Many areas remain open for study, with a particular need for interdisciplinary research that includes oceanography. INTRODUCTION The Short-tailed Shearwater was one of the first Australian birds to be banded in large numbers The Short-tailed Shearwater Puffinustenuirostris, (Serventy 1957, 1961) and to be subjected to a commonly known as the Tasmanian muttonbird, long-term scientific study (Guiler et al. 1958). This is one of about I 00 species in the Procellarii study was commenced on Fisher Island in the formes. The diagno�tic feature of the order is the Furneaux Group of Tasmania in March 1947 by external nostrils produced into tubes extending Dominic Serventy formerly of the CSIRO onto the bill. The group stayed in Inveraray and included a number of NOSAS members who enjoyed the usual well researched sites and excellent evening talks. The first site was a Neolithic chambered cairn in Crarae Gardens. This cairn was excavated in the 1950s when it was discovered to contain inhumations and cremation burials. The chamber is divided into three sections by two septal slabs with the largest section at the rear. The next site was Arichonan township which overlooks Caol Scotnish, an inlet of Loch Sween, and which was cleared in 1848 though there were still some households listed in the 1851 census. 7. IMPACTS OF ALIEN LAND ARTHROPODS AND MOLLUSKS ON NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS IN HAWAIfI Francis G. Howarth ABSTRACT Over 2,000 alien arthropod species and about 30 alien non-marine mollusks are established in the wild in Hawai'i, While the data are too meager to assess fully the impacts of any of these organisms on the na- tive biota, the documentation suggests several areas of critical concern. Alien species feed directly on na- tive plants or their products, thus competing with na- tive herbivores and affecting host plants. Alien pred- ators and parasites critically reduce the populations of many native species and seriously deplete the food resources of native predators. Some immigrant species spread diseases that infect elements of the native bio- ta. Others are toxic to native predators. There is also competition for other resources, such as nesting and resting sites. Even apparently innocuous intro- duced species may provide food for alien predators, thus keeping predator populations high with an atten- dant greater impact on native prey. Control measures targeted at alien pests may be hazardous to natives. Mitigative measures must be based on sound research and firmer understanding of the complex interactions and dynamics of functioning ecosystems. Strict quarantine procedures are cost effective in preventing or delaying the establishment of potential pests. Strict control or fumigation is needed for nonessential importations (such as cow chips, Christmas trees, and flowers in bulk). Improved review of introductions for biological control is required in order to prevent repeating past mistakes. Biocontrol introductions must be used only for bona fide pests and used in native ecosystems only in special circumstances. -

Cappenberg Pusat Penelitian Oseanografi (P2O) ± LIPI, Jakarta E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The research was conducted in April 2008 and March 2009, in the Lampung Bay on six locations: Lahu, Ringgung, Hurun Bay, Mutun, Pelabuhan Panjang, and Sebalang. The aims of this research were to determine the diversity of neogastropod and their condition in this bay. The neogastropod samples were collected by using square transect method. A total number of 176 individuals of neo- gastropod consisted of 15 species which were belong to 6 families were collected from the bay. Mo- rula Margariticola and Morula sp. (Muricidae) were the dominance species with relatively wide dis- tribution. The diversity index (H‘) ranged between 0,90 ± 2,10. The evenness index (e) ranged between 0.65 ± 0.91, and the species dominant index (C) ranged between 0.15 ± 0.49. The overall calculation indicated that the diversity of neogastropod in the Lampung Bay was relatively low. Comparison the diversiry of neogastropod from the other various areas in the coastal zone of Indonesia was also dis- cussed in this paper. Keywords: diversity, neogastropod, Lampung Bay. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan April 2008 dan Maret 2009 di Teluk Lampung yaitu di Lahu, Ringgung, Teluk Hurun, Mutun, Pelabuhan Panjang dan Sebalang, bertujuan untuk mengetahui kom- posisi, distribusi, dan keragaman jenis neogastropoda. Contoh jenis neogastropoda didapat dengan menggunakan metode transek kuadrat. Total 176 individu neogastropoda yang ditemukan terdiri atas 15 jenis dan mewakili 5 suku.
