In Človek a spoločnosť [Individual and Society], 2019, roč. 22, č. 3, s. 11-42. doi: http://www.doi.org/10.31577/cas.2019.03.557 Abstract: The representation of the idea of justice through the ancient Roman goddess-figure, recently known as Lady Justice, has constituted an essential part of European culture for centuries. This paper outlines these statues in town halls, courthouses, and public spaces in Hungary, and examines some of them in detail. The aim of the study is to draw a general picture of such statues in a Central and Eastern European country, namely in Hungary, to identify the characteristics of these sculptures, reflecting their social and political context, and in some cases to contrast them with that of those which were characteristic in Western Europe. The nature of this study is multi and interdisciplinary, so it applies several methods in exploring its theme; for example, art and cultural history were mixed with reference to social history and legal history. The paper focuses on the legal and political culture – conceived in the cultural context, institutional prerequisites and behavioral patterns as components of law and politics – and treats statues of Justice as part of this culture. As a way of introduction, the paper gives a brief overview of three murals, and discusses, briefly, the controversy around the authorship of one of them; stating that its attribution to Boticelli is, in all probability, misleading. -

The cantos differ significantly in terms of their dominant imagery, 1 of 28 motifs, structure, topography and astronomy, and characters. Nonetheless, despite these major differences, there are some suggestive parallels between the cantos that relate to their portrayal of women. Across the Eighteens, Dante alludes to female figures in classical, biblical and historical sources, which are often — but not always — negative and narrowly prescribed. Positive and negative images of women in the cantos share a number of characteristics and behaviours, and women are often defined in terms of their political or social functions — specifically in terms of how they aid or impede men engaged in military or heroic exploits, or in terms of their reproductive roles. -

Lieutenant Colonel Lawson provides a look into the balancing act U.S. Army chaplains as non-com- batants in Afghanistan are involved in with regards to Information Operations. Colonel Reyes discusses his experiences as the MNF-I C2 CIOC Chief, detailing the problems and solutions to streamlining the intelligence effort. First Lieutenant Winwood relates her experiences in integrating intelligence support into psychological operations. From a doctrinal standpoint, Lieutenant Colonels McDonough and Conway review the evolution of priority intelligence requirements from a combined operations/intelligence view. Mr. Jack Kem dis- cusses the constructs of assessment during operations–measures of effectiveness and measures of per- formance, common discussion threads in several articles in this issue. George Van Otten sheds light on a little known issue on our southern border, that of the illegal im- migration and smuggling activities which use the Tohono O’odham Reservation as a corridor and offers some solutions for combined agency involvement and training to stem the flow. Call for Justice Museum Hof van Busleyden Mechelen 23 MARCH - 24 JUNE 2018 ART AND LAW IN THE NETHERLANDS (1450-1650) Justice and injustice are two of the most prominent themes during the Golden Age of Netherlandish art in the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth century. The dukes of Burgundy wanted to combine their territories in the Netherlands into one political entity, which in turn occasioned sweeping changes to the judicial system. They established central institutions, such as the Great Council of Mechelen, thereby effectively curtailing the authority of the local courts. While the legal process became more professional, it also became more cumbersome and less accessible. The discovery of the New World, the Dutch Revolt and the Spanish Inquisition unleashed a rampage of unprecedented horror. People who were different or held a different opinion were cruelly punished. Almost all the important painters of this period, from Rogier van der Weyden to Antoon van Dyck and Rembrandt all focused on the themes of justice, injustice and law in their work. They were inspired by examples of righteous behaviour in Biblical stories, allegories, myths and history. Their artworks show how crime is punished and provide solace for injustice. Contemporary abuses are mocked and denounced. The art of justice and injustice was used to decorate town halls and churches, and also penetrated the domestic sphere, mainly through books and prints. 1. Illustrating Justice between Literal Representation and Visual Metaphor Amany Ismail, University of Alexandria, Egypt The European Conference on Arts & Humanities 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Artists have been representing justice as an abstract concept for long centuries, revealing and interpreting its comprehensive meaning through illustrations, taking different forms: as a visual documentary for a situation though treated as a historical evidence, or visual commentary expressing an opinion and treated like an evidence of a special point of an artist view or just as a kind of evidence in a vivid entertaining way. This paper aims to trace the historical development of artistic depictions illustrating justice through two illustrative styles: First literal representation that depict real conditions with a degree of simplification, abstraction, and idealization including courtroom sketch that convey most directly the personalities and dramatic scenes of the trial work to the general public .Second visual metaphor, including editorial illustrations which may use irony and satire, through idioms and puns to encourage insights, which motivate the reader to think and analyze the drawings that need interaction between these external visual metaphors and his internal knowledge representations to interpret the latent meaning derived from the illustration . Additionally, this paper as an analytical study clarify that illustrating justice through literal representations and visual metaphors shape the reader’s understanding and have significant effect to bring the imaginary picture of justice through choosing the effective compatible illustrative style to transmit the proper concept of the image of justice not only the single vision of the artist. Justitia was introduced by emperor Augustus, and was thus not a very old deity in the Roman pantheon.
