KING ISLAND SHIPPING AND FREIGHT SERVICES Mr RICHARD LOWRIE, INCAT, WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED. CHAIR (Ms Forrest) - We invite you to talk about yourself, your business and, if you are happy to, about your expertise in the area of addressing freight problems for a small island, if you think there are some options within your business and how that might reflect on the terms of reference of the committee. Mr LOWRIE - I am employed with Incat and have been for over 21 years. I was in a sales and marketing role for the first 13 years, which required a lot of travel and living overseas for the company, getting a good handle on the market and a handle on other islands and other areas similar to King Island. I then moved into a human resources role, which has been my role for the last seven-and-a-half years, but I still very much dabble in sales. We are still trying to develop markets in regions closer to home as well - it is quite exciting as to where that may go - hence, a lot of that work especially in Indonesia of late with their multiple islands and all the issues they face. We feel that with that personal experience and certainly with my boss, Robert Clifford, our product technology has developed to a stage where we think there are different options for King Island and Bass Strait. -

(Tony Prescott) INTRODUCTION The popular image of the Manly ferry during the present century has very much evolved around the "class" (to use a naval term loosely) of six very similar double-ended screw steamers built for the Port Jackson Co-operative Steamship Co. Ltd. and the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Co. Ltd. between 1905 and 1922. These six steamers were to be eclipsed in size, speed, accommodation and glamour by the Scottish-built Dee Why and Curl Curl of 1928 (The Log, May 1977) and South Steyne of 1938 (The Log, August 1983, November 1983). However, the smaller boats were to prove more economically practical in the long-term and two of them, both to be described in this article, are still in service while the Scottish boats have been withdrawn. Up to the early years of this century, the Port Jackson company operated a fleet consisting almost entirely of paddle steamers. The reason for the relatively late transition to screw propulsion lay in the necessity of using double-ended ships due to the configuration of Sydney Harbour with its many coves and the difficulties of turning in the Circular Quay terminus. Smaller double-ended ferries had been found to operate quite successfully with screw propulsion, but the Manly service had speed and heavy weather requirements which necessitated fine bows on the ships. -

After ‘reprogramming’, the cells have the ability to form any cell type of the body, including cells of the heart. Under special conditions, these cells can be coaxed into producing heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). What I am going to do is announce my chairman of the board, Mr Michael Grainger, who is going to announce everyone else. Mr GRAINGER - Thank you, minister. On my right is our chief executive officer, Bernard Dwyer, and on the left of the minister is our chief financial officer, Stuart McCall. Mr HIDDING - If I may, just a couple of points as an opening statement. This Government has a plan to grow visitation to Tasmania to 1.5 million people a year by 2020, which the industry tells us will create 8 000 jobs. We are on track to deliver that. As part of this plan, the Government committed to refocus TT-Line on growing its passenger numbers, following a decline that was worrying us in the final years of the former government. -

ABOUT FACE: ASIAN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUSTRALIA Alison Elizabeth Broinowski 12 December 2001 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University ii Statement This thesis is my own work. Preliminary research was undertaken collaboratively with a team of Asian Australians under my co-direction with Dr Russell Trood and Deborah McNamara. They were asked in 1995-96 to collect relevant material, in English and vernacular languages, from the public sphere in their countries of origin. Three monographs based on this work were published in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Australia Asia Relations at Griffith University and these, together with one unpublished paper, are extensively cited in Part 2. The researchers were Kwak Ki-Sung, Anne T. Nguyen, Ouyang Yu, and Heidi Powson and Lou Miles. Further research was conducted from 2000 at the National Library with a team of Chinese and Japanese linguists from the Australian National University, under an ARC project, ‘Asian Accounts of Australia’, of which Shun Ikeda and I are Chief Investigators. Its preliminary findings are cited in Part 2. Alison Broinowski iii Abstract This thesis considers the ways in which Australia has been publicly represented in ten Asian societies in the twentieth century. It shows how these representations are at odds with Australian opinion leaders’ assertions about being a multicultural society, with their claims about engagement with Asia, and with their understanding of what is ‘typically’ Australian. It reviews the emergence and development of Asian regionalism in the twentieth century, and considers how Occidentalist strategies have come to be used to exclude and marginalise Australia. -

"From Quong Tarts to Victor Changs: Being Chinese in Australia in the Twentieth Century" Public seminar at the ANU, 24 May 2000 Henry Chan - Honorary Fellow, School of Science and Technology Studies, University of New South Wales NOTE: Parts of this paper formed the introduction to one that was the closing address at the "Chinese Heritage in Australian Federation" conference in Melbourne on 2 July 2000. Abstract Recently some Australian scholars and historians have reasserted that there must be an Anglo-Celtic "central core" to the Australian identity and that they see this "central core" as being threatened by an equally mythical set of "Asian values". This lecture will challenge such assertions. It will begin with a discussion of the contributions Chinese have made to Australian life and society since Federation and then go on to show how Chinese-Australians have already and will continue to contribute to the development of a truly Australian identity for the Twenty-first century. Introduction It is now a truism to assert that we are living in the midst of a globalising age. The twenty-first century will see a vast acceleration of the movement of peoples, goods, and knowledge across national borders. Flexible transnational citizens will probably become the norm as notions of the nation, nation identity, nationalism will be questioned and even jettisoned. Australia is already a typical immigrant society of twenty-first century, diversity of peoples and cultures. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that 23% of the Australian population in 1998 were overseas born and the 1996 Census showed that a further 27% of persons born in Australia had at least one overseas born parent. -

The small amounts we gain through private donations and sale of items is enough for the day to day running of the association, but we need some serious money if we are to achieve our goal of getting Baragoola slipped and the hull repaired (or areas replaced as needed) if we are to keep this important heritage item going as a viable entity for many years to come.
