It came from the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire and followed the slight ridge of the watershed between the Thames and the Severn just north of Moreton in Marsh. Its course from the Four Shire Stone is probably marked by the short stretch of county boundary across Uolford Heath to Lemington Lane. The subsequent line is diffi- cult to determine; it may have struck north west across Batsford Heath to Dorn or, perhaps more likely, may have continued along Lemington Lane around the eastern boundary of the Fire Service Technical College, so skirting the marshy area of Lemington and Batsford Heaths. In the latter case, it would have continued across the Moreton in Marsh-Todenham road and along the narrow lane past Lower Lemington which crosses the Ah29 road (the Fosse Way) to Dorn. From there it would have continued to follow approximately the line of this road up past Batsford and along the ridge above to the course followed by the Ahh, thence following the Cotswold Edge southwards. The Salt Hay from Droitwich through Campden followed the same route through Batsford and Dorn to the Four Shire Stone, where it divided into two routes. One followed the same line as the previous way through Kitebrook and past Salterls Hell Farm near Little Compton to the Ridgeway near the Rollright Stones.

Gloucestershire Parishes Hundred boundaries are occasionally inaccurate and detached parts of parishes cannot be shown for reasons of scale. List of Gloucestershire Parishes This is a list of all the Church of England parishes in the Diocese of Gloucester, in alphabetical order. It gives the reference number of the parish records held by Gloucestershire Archives. Some parishes at the edges of the county are in other dioceses and their parish records are not held by Gloucestershire Archives. • Moreton-In-Marsh ABC GUIDE to LOCAL BUSINESSES
Moreton-in-Marsh ABC GUIDE TO LOCAL BUSINESSES Summer 2021 Includes 150 plus Companies Web Addresses Location Maps Local Contacts Business Information Local Authority Details Leasing Industrial Properties Small Business Rates Relief Published by BANKIER SLOAN Chartered Surveyors, Sugarswell Business Park, Shenington, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX15 6HW Tel: 01295 688384 Mob: 07831 338111 www.centre-p.co.uk [email protected] BUSINESSES MORETON-IN-MARSH INTRODUCTION Summer 2021 Welcome to a very unusual Spring. The hospitality businesses would usually be looking forward to the large number of visitors attracted to the Cotswold by The Cheltenham Festival and soon after by Easter. Neither will happen this year as far as local businesses are concerned. The aim for all is to attempt to remain in business until lock-down ends and travel becomes acceptable. UK visitors may come in their thousands, but they will not spend as overseas visitors spend. The High Street will take a full twelve months to recover, whilst local industry will in our opinion bounce back much quicker. It does not rely on dollars, euros and yens! BANKIER SLOAN have managed, for over 20 years on behalf of the long-time owners, the Fosseway Business Park. We have also represented many tenants and owners of commercial property in the North Cotswolds. We believe we are the only firm of Chartered Surveyors in the region that deal exclusively with commercial, industrial and retail premises. We regularly give advice on rent reviews and lease renewals, as well as the letting and sale of premises. In recent years we have also become recognised nationally for our on-going reports on Small Business Rates Relief.

  • 1 the Anglo-Brabant Massif
The Anglo-Brabant Massif: persistent but enigmatic palaeo-relief at the heart of western Europe Tim Pharaoh British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham, NG12 5GG [email protected] ABSTRACT The surface geology of central England and Belgium obscures a large ‘basement’ massif with a complex history and stronger crust and lithosphere than surrounding regions. The nucleus was forged by subduction-related magmatism at the Gondwana margin in Ediacaran time, and partitioning into platform and basin was already evident in Cambrian/earliest Ordovician time. The accretion of the Monian Composite Terrane during the Penobscotian deformation phase preceded late Tremadocian rifting, and Floian separation, of the Avalonia Terrane from the Gondwana margin. Late Ordovician magmatism in a belt from the Lake District to Belgium records subduction beneath Avalonia of part of the Tornquist Sea. This ‘Western Pacific-style’ oceanic basin closed in latest Ordovician time, uniting Avalonia and Baltica. Closure of the Iapetus Ocean in early Silurian time was soon followed by closure of the Rheic Ocean, recorded by subduction along the southern margin of the massif. The causes of late Caledonian deformation are poorly understood and controversial. Partitioned behaviour of the massif persisted into late Palaeozoic time, when both late Devonian and Carboniferous sequences show strong onlap, and during the Variscan Orogeny, when a wedge-shaped mountain foreland uplift was driven by orogenic indentation. Permian to Mesozoic sequences persistently exhibit onlap onto the massif. Keywords: Anglo-Brabant Tectonics Palaeo-relief Avalonia Caledonian Variscan 1. • Deerhurst's Earliest Patrons: Æthelmund and Æthelric
Trans. Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society 130 (2012), 151–182 Deerhurst’s Earliest Patrons: Æthelmund and Æthelric By MICHAEL HARE The Anglo-Saxon minster church of St Mary, Deerhurst, Gloucestershire (OS Nat. Grid SO 870299) is one of the outstanding buildings to survive from the Middle Saxon period (Fig. 1). Recent art-historical study of the sculpture and painted remains has indicated a date in the first half of the 9th century for the main phase of building.1 The testament of Æthelric, a document bearing the date 804, tells us that Æthelric bequeathed four estates to Deerhurst, a bequest which apparently took effect in the early 820s. The context suggests that in all likelihood Æthelric’s father, Æthelmund, had also been a patron of Deerhurst. The historical and art-historical evidence thus allows for the possibility that it was the patronage of Æthelmund and Æthelric which enabled the minster community at Deerhurst to enlarge their church and to create the surviving monument with notably more art in situ than any other English building from the pre-Norman period. The aim of the present essay is to explore the available evidence for both Æthelmund and Æthelric. Æthelmund – the prosopographical problem The name Æthelmund occurs in a Mercian context in various sources between 767 and 802. However, an account of ‘Æthelmund’ is by no means straightforward, as scholars are not in agreement that all these occurrences relate to a single person. In the following account I will deal first with references to Æthelmund, son of Ingeld, who is found in documents bearing the dates 767 and 770.
