    HELFORD RIVER SURVEY A survey of the Pisces (Fish) of the Helford Estuary A Report to the Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area Group funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature U.K. and English Nature P A Gainey 1999 1 Summary The Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (hereafter HVMCA) was designated in 1987 and since that time a series of surveys have been carried out to examine the flora and fauna present. In this study no less that eighty species of fish have been identified within the confines of the HVMCA. Many of the more common fish were found to be present in large numbers. Several species have been designated as nationally scarce whilst others are nationally rare and receive protection at varying levels. The estuary is obviously an important nursery for several species which are of economic importance. A full list of the fish species present and the protection some of them receive is given in the Appendices Nine species of fish have been recorded as new to the HVMCA. T is usual to write something as a preface, and this generally appears to be to make some excuse for having written at all. In a pre- face to Tom Toole and his Friends — a very interesting book published a few years ago, by Mrs. Henry Sandford, in which the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, together with the Wedgwoods and many other eminent men of that day figure,—the author says, on one occasion, when surrounded by old letters, note books, etc., an old and faithful servant remon- " " strated with her thus : And what for ? she " demanded very emphatically. There's many a hundred dozen books already as nobody ever reads." Her hook certainly justified her efforts, and needed no excuse. The great majority of us are convinced that the county of our birth is the best part of Eng- land, and if we are folk country-born, that our parish is the most favoured spot in it.     Weekly Newsletter 16th October 2015 Dear Parents, We are so excited about next week’s Aspirations Week………. Next week, we have invited a number of people from our local comminity into school to talk about the skills that they need to complete the jobs, careers and volunatry occupations in which they are involved. From farming to F1 Motorboat racing, surgery to stained glass making and architecture to app programming, we are giving our children the opportunity to have a ‘window on the world’ outside of school. Following on from the success of last year’s Aspirations Week, we are focusing on building skills in the short term (I would like to improve my handwriting/use of place value/ability to complete a 360 degree spin on my scooter) to longer term skills. By speaking to these people, we want to raise our children’s understanding of the vast array of opportunties that are available, right here in Cornwall. I am looking forward to letting you know how we get on in next week’s newsletter. Nao Robot Thank you to Andy and Mark from NCI Technologies, who came to an assembly on Wednesday to demonstrate how a Nao Robot (aka Toby!) could help enhace our children’s understanding of computer programming and coding; key skills for the digital world in which they will work in the future.
