“About a year and a half ago, these three people saved my life. I am happily and forever indebted to them.” Grateful Patient Spotlight

Faye Lee, MD, Elena Rossman, Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner, Ryan Gerber, and Randall F. Roberts, MD

Ryan Gerber, a downtown Los Angeles resident in his 30s, felt chest pains while at the gym just a few blocks from California Hospital Medical Center. He Googled “emergency room” on his smart phone and came to our hospital. It turned out that he had a serious heart condition called an aortic dissection and an aneurysm. There is a very small window of time in which you can treat this condition before it is fatal. Mr. Gerber is grateful for the doctors and nurses who saved his life that day and to California Hospital for being his community hospital.

“The nurses, doctors, and staff were all pretty awesome. They really looked after me and my mom, who was there for almost the entire time. Amazing people like Nurse Practitioner Elena Rossman treated us like family and really took care of me at my weakest, when I couldn’t even take care of myself. They’re good people and I really am indebted to them for the rest of my fortunate life. Did I mention how awesome they are?” —Grateful Patient Ryan Gerber

4 A View Inside the Foundation Q&A with Margaret R. Peterson, PhD President, California Hospital Medical Center

It’s been nearly two years since Margaret R. Peterson, PhD, stepped into the position of President of California Hospital Medical Center. With more than 30 years experience in healthcare, she was well equipped to lead the operations of a complex institution such as California Hospital.

Over the years, California Hospital has seen its fair share of change in the healthcare sector. However, with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare,” the pace and magnitude of these shifts are greater than ever before. We sat down with Dr. Peterson to examine some key questions regarding reform, our community, and what the future holds for California Hospital.

How have the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Covered California impacted hospitals?

Dr. Peterson: When healthcare reform became law and insurance cards were issued to so many people who never had health insurance before, providers knew our emergency departments would be inundated because this familiar place would be the consumers’ first point of contact with a healthcare provider. This past year, many low-income health plans were rolled into Medi-Cal. This is the state’s insurance program serving low-

While we are on the subject of community, what are your thoughts on the renaissance that downtown Los Angeles is experiencing?
