The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

MANFRED KRIFKA FOUR THOUSAND SHIPS PASSED THROUGH THE LOCK: OBJECT-INDUCED MEASURE FUNCTIONS ON EVENTS 1 . INTRODUCTION 1.1. Event-Related and Object-Related Readings The subject of this paper* is certain peculiar readings of sentences like the following ones: (1)a. Four thousand ships passed through the lock last year. b. The library lent out 23,000 books in 1987. C. Sixty tons of radioactive waste were transported through the lock last year. d. The dry cleaners cleaned 5.7 million bags of clothing in 1987. e. 12,000 persons walked through the turnstile yesterday. Take the first example, (la) (it is inspired by the basic text of the LiLog project of IBM Germany, which first drew my attention to these sen- tences). It clearly has two readings. The first one, call it the object-related reading, says that there are four thousand ships which passed through the lock last year. The second one, call it the event-related reading, says that there were four thousand events of passing through the lock by a ship last year. The object-related reading presupposes the existence of (at least) four thousand ships in the world we are talking about. In the event-related reading, there might be fewer ships in the world. In the limiting case, a single ship passing through the lock about 12 times a day would be suffi- cient. We find the same ambiguity in the other examples of (1). The library might contain fewer than 23,000 books, there might be less than sixty tons of radioactive waste, there might be less than 5.7 million bags of clothing, and there might be fewer than 12,000 persons - but the sentences (lb-e) could still be true in their event-related readings. -

The downstream of the world’s largest Three Gorges Dam (TGD) along Yangtze River (1560 km) hosts numerous mid-channel bars (MCBs). The morphodynamics of these MCBs are crucial to the river’s hydrological processing, local ecological functioning and socioeconomic development. However, a systematic understanding of such dynamics and their 20 linkages to the TGD across the entire downstream reach remain largely unknown. Using Landsat archive images and a thematic extracting scheme, the work presents comprehensive monitoring of MCB dynamics in terms of number, area, and shape, in the downstream of the TGD during 1985–2018. -

China and India have fought a war over contested territory through which the river flows, and Bangladesh faces human security pressures in this basin that will be magnified by upstream river practices. Controversial dam-building activities and water diversion plans could threaten regional stability; yet, no bilateral or multilateral water management accord exists in the Brahmaputra basin. This project, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, provides greater understanding of the equities and drivers fueling water insecurity in the Brahmaputra River basin. After conducting research in Dhaka, New Delhi, and Beijing, CNA offers recommendations for key stakeholders to consider at the subnational, bilateral, and multilateral levels to increase cooperation in the basin. These findings lay the foundation for policymakers in China, India, and Bangladesh to discuss steps that help manage and resolve Brahmaputra resource competition, thereby strengthening regional security.
