Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood
Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film. -

Where Stars are Born and Legends are Made™ The Apollo Theater Study Guide is published by the Education Program of the Apollo Theater in New York, NY | Volume 2, Issue 1, November 2010 If the Apollo Theater could talk, imagine the stories it could tell. It The has witnessed a lot of history, and seen a century’s worth of excitement. The theater itself has stood proudly on 125th Street since 1914, when it started life as a burlesque house for whites only, Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater. Dancers in skimpy costumes stripped down to flesh-colored leotards, and comics told bawdy jokes – that is, until then New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia made the decision to close down burlesque houses all over the city. When the doors of the burlesque theaters were padlocked, the building was sold. By S ul the time it reopened in 1934, a new name proclaimed itself from the marquee: the 125th Street Apollo Theatre. From the start, the Apollo was beloved by Harlemites, and immediately of became an integral part of Harlem life. When the Apollo first opened, Harlem boasted a lot of theaters and clubs. But many didn’t admit black audiences. Though the musicians who played in the clubs were black, the audiences were often white; the country still had a lot to American learn about integration. But the Apollo didn’t play primarily to whites. As soon as it opened its doors, black residents of Harlem streamed in themselves to enjoy the show. In the early years, the Apollo presented acts in a revue format, with a variety of acts on each bill. -

" # " $ % & ' " ( # ) * " Peter Maleitzke has recently completed a ten year residence at the American Conservatory Theater as Associate Artist and Music Director. This past year he continued on to Music Direct the first San Francisco performances of Adam Guettel's Myths and Hymns and as the Master Singing Teacher in the M.F.A. program. Recent projects: composing an original score for The Gamester, winning the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award for best Original Score, work-shopping Far From The Maddening Crowd, directing a cabaret production of Pippin, arranger and composer for The Three Sisters; musical direction for Carey Perloff's The Colossus of Rhodes; Brecht’s and Weill’s Happy End (featuring Betty Buckley); and the Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing (performed in three cities to sold out houses), world-premiere A.C.T. productions of The Difficulty of Crossing a Field ( Featuring Julia Migenes and Kronos) and Blitzstein's No for an Answer, A.C.T.'s The Threepenny Opera featuring Bebe Neuworth, Nancy Dusault, Lisa Vroman and Anika Noni Rose (Mr Maleitzke won the Bay Area Theatre Critics' Circle Award and BackStageWest Garland Award for this production). He was the conductor of the first national production of The Phantom of the Opera. His regional credits include Gypsy (Dean Goodman Award), A Little Night Music, Rags, and The Most Happy Fella and Closer Than Ever. Mr Maleitzke has worked extensively as a vocal coach, studio recording pianist and producer for most of the major networks and studios of Los Angeles, most notibly the series: Taken: Executive Producer: Steven Spielberg. -
