I am elated to write to you through this Alumni Annual Report which seeks to communicate the wonderful initiatives made possible at the Institute by the alumni community. The initiatives have brought about transformation in academics and student-experience, which are the two most critical differentiators of any educational institution and your participation has been the key to realizing these. We need your help further, especially in the context of the recently announced fee hike. I would take this opportunity to brief you about the ‘Learn, Earn and Return’ programme. This is driven by the need to motivate our current students to follow your legacy in the way that you have been contributing to KGP. Your contribution towards the subsidy of the fees of deserving students will imbibe a culture of gratitude and giving back. So let us drive this initiative ‘Learn, Earn and Return’ together from this year. As always, I look forward to hearing from you on how you can participate in the Institute’s yajna to enhance student experience at IIT KGP and support the career goals of your junior KGPians. Prof. Partha P. Chakrabarti (CS/85/RK) Director, IIT Kharagpur From the Desk From 3 ALUMNI ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16 Message from the Dean Greetings from IIT KGP! It is time again for us to bring you good news from all the initiatives that have been taken at your Alma Mater over the year gone by. As always the alumni have been acting as accelerators of several positive transformations that KGP has undergone this year. Several key projects have been operationalized in the financial year 2015-16. The Shri Gopal Rajgarhia International Programme has been initiated this year to support international travel of students and scholars. It makes significant contribution to our academics and R&D by bringing distinguished experts in contact with our students and faculty. The Centre for Excellence for Petroleum Engineering, seed funded by Shri Asoke Dey Sarkar and Ms. Ruma Acharya, has been launched and we are ready to select the first batch of students for the academic programme. The Centre is also allocated physical space as moving infrastructure to begin its existence. The Centre is acquiring resources and organizing its programme to be rolled out for dual degree students. An innovation centre named after Professor M N Faruqui and seed funded by Shri Arjun malhotra, has been set up to promote students’ innovation. The Kirttan B. Behera ‘Best All Round Award’ for all round performance of students of all years has been approved by the Senate. Halls of residence are being renovated and facilitated with modern equipment with support from alumni. Alumni support has happened for RK Hall and Nehru Hall. Similar support is likely for several others. Similarly alumni are coming forward to make niche commitments to departmental infrastructure such as in departments of mechanical and chemical engineering. All this has been possible because several of you have taken active interest in the holistic development of the Institute. ID Program We have created various campaigns for you to contribute the way you want. We have a campaign to commemorate your batch, a campaign for your hall development, annual donations as well as options for contributions towards our international programme, scholarships, chair professorship or any other specific cause. This year we have also launched a CSR campaign to show care and support the strong streak of socially relevant research that is done at Kgp. So those of you who are in the corporate sector or are entrepreneurs can now directly facilitate our CSR programme. We also need your help in building brand awareness for the Institute in India and abroad. A lot of work remains to be done and you as our flag-bearers need to march ahead. Get in touch with the Institutional Development team to deliberate on how you can help build the tempo that is transforms at IIT KGP on the path of its vision. We formally define mobile shopper marketing as the planning and execution of all mobile-based marketing activities that influence a shopper along and beyond the path-to-purchase: from the initial shopping trigger, to the purchase, consumption, repurchase, and recommendation stages. However, not much is known about mobile shopper marketing. We plug this gap by first discussing mobile shopper marketing and its scope in depth and then presenting a process model that connects the mobile shopping journey with four key entities, i.e., shopper, employee, organization, and mobile technology.     Dam Edited by – Ashis Roy Dam a structure built across a stream, river, or estuary to store water. A reservoir is created upstream of the dam to supply water for human consumption, irrigation, or industrial use. Reservoirs are also used to reduce peak discharge of floodwater, to increase the volume of water stored for generating hydroelectric power, or to increase the depth of water in a river so as to improve navigation and provide for recreation. Dams are usually of two basic types - masonry (concrete) and embankment (earth or rock-fill). Masonry dams are used to block streams running through narrow gorges, as in mountainous terrain; though such dams may be very high, the total amount of material required is much less. The choice between masonry and earthen dam and the actual design depend on the geology and configuration of the site, the functions of the dam, and cost factors. Auxiliary works for a dam include spillways, gates, or valves to control the discharge of surplus water downstream from the reservoir; an intake structure conducting water to a power station or to canals, tunnels, or pipelines for more distant use; provision for evacuating silt carried into the reservoir; and means for permitting boats or fish to cross the dam. A dam therefore is the central structure in a multipurpose scheme aiming at the conservation of water resources. Water levels in the reservoir upstream is controlled by opening and closing gates of the spillway which acts as the safety valve of the dam. In addition to spillways, openings through dams are also required for drawing off water for irrigation and water supply, for ensuring a minimum flow in the river for riparian interests downstream, for generating power, and for evacuating water and silt from the reservoir.

Attendees from Washington and Oregon were joined by members and guests from many other states and Canada. One of our special guests was Sylvia Quinn from Spokane, Washington. Sylvia is well known nationally as the long time Bloomsday race director. She has run all 38 Bloomsday races and won her age group 35 times! At Saturday’s Yakima River Canyon Marathon, Sylvia absolutely crushed the WORLD MARATHON RECORD for 78 year old women, cruising to a 4:23 finish. Congratulations, Sylvia! Report Summary Developed economies today are dominated by services, and in developing economies, services are growing by leaps and bounds. Business-to-business (B2B) firms, which account for the majority of the market transactions, are increasingly using new services or service innovations (B2B-SIs) to grow and garner competitive advantage. Such service innovations are associated with a certain degree of risk. For example, new services are often hard to scale since they may have to be “produced” at the customers’ locations and cannot be manufactured and inventoried at a central location ahead of time. To better assess the return and risk outcomes of B2B-SIs, it is useful to compare them to business-to-consumer service innovations (B2C-SIs). In this study, Thomas Dotzel and Venkatesh Shankar analyze a unique panel data set of 1,668 service innovations (B2B-SIs as well as B2C-SIs) across 14 industries. They empirically examine the effects of B2B-SIs on firm value and firm risk and compare these effects to those of B2C-SIs.

Branded retailer mobile apps have been shown to significantly increase purchases across channels. However, app service failures can lead to decreases in app usage, making app failure prevention and recovery critical for retailers. Does an app failure influence purchases in general and within the online channel in particular? Does it have any spillover effects across other channels? What potential mechanisms explain and what factors moderate these effects? We examine these questions empirically, employing a unique dataset from an omnichannel retailer. We leverage a natural experiment of exogenous systemwide failure shocks in this retailer’s mobile app and related data to examine the causal impact of app failures on purchases in all channels using a difference-in-differences approach.

It has the potential to change the paradigm of retailing from one based on consumers entering the retailing environment to retailers entering the consumer's environment through anytime, anywhere mobile devices. We propose a conceptual framework that comprises three key entities: the consumer, the mobile, and the retailer. Report Summary In recent years, the penetration of mobile devices has reached unprecedented levels. In particular, mobile apps are increasingly dominating mobile device use. Despite the widespread use and the potentially significant effects of mobile apps and different app features, their consequences have been underexplored. Not much is known about how app adoption affects the net monetary value of purchases after accounting for product returns. In this research, Unnati Narang and Venkatesh Shankar reveal new insights about the effects of mobile app adoption on shopping behavior across channels. They study a rich set of managerially important outcomes, such as individual purchase incidence and amount and product return incidence and amount. They use a large-scale dataset from an omnichannel retailer of video games, consumer electronics, and wireless services with 30 million shoppers. This unique dataset identifies individual app adoption date and allows the authors to isolate the effects of the app using a difference-in-differences regression. The research reveals that app adopters buy 21% more often but spend 12% less per purchase occasion and return 73% more often than non-adopters after adoption.

    Contributors Aydın Alptekinoğlu Aydın Alptekinoğlu is an Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management and Robert G. Schwartz University Endowed Fellow in Business Administration at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business. He holds a Ph.D. in Operations Management from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. His broad research interest is in product strategy. In particular, he studies product variety management, assortment plan- ning, (mass) customization of goods and services, retail returns, pricing, and other aspects of product strategy that lie at the interface of operations and marketing. His current research projects include developing a discrete choice model, studying flexible product designs that can be reconfigured on demand for different uses by consumers, and understanding store returns for online purchases. He is currently teaching a capstone course to Smeal seniors majoring in supply chain management, and a Ph.D. course on the tools (e.g., discrete choice theory) and topics (e.g., product variety management) that make up the operations-marketing interface research. He is also serving Penn State as the Research Director of the Center for Supply Chain Research. Zhiling Bei Zhiling Bei is a fourth-year doctoral student in marketing at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His research interests include retailing and channel management. It has the potential to change the paradigm of retailing from one based on consumers entering the retailing environment to retailers entering the consumer's environment through anytime, anywhere mobile devices. We propose a conceptual framework that comprises three key entities: the consumer, the mobile, and the retailer. The framework addresses key related issues such as mobile consumer activities, mobile consumer segments, mobile adoption enablers and inhibitors, key mobile properties, key retailer mobile marketing activities and competition. We also address successful retailer mobile marketing strategies, identify the customer-related and organizational challenges on this topic, and outline future research scenarios and avenues related to these issues. © 2010 Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, Inc.
