Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier – 2021 World Bronze Medalists Upcoming Projects Rebound to Skating This ongoing group of activities has been developed to ensure member clubs and skating schools have the skills, tools and resources necessary to recover from the pandemic, become stronger and increase participation in skating in the coming years. Below are the first three initiatives: 1. Club/Skating School Assistance Grant Program • With support from the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, Skate Ontario is providing this opportunity for member clubs/skating schools to apply for a grant to help off-set some of the financial burden brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Skate Canada Ice Summit – Club/Skating School Delegate Support • This year, Skate Ontario will reimburse each Ontario club/school for one (1) delegate registration fee as our support for Ontario participation at this year’s event. 3. Programs and Marketing Club Support • This comprehensive program will assist clubs to get ready for a return to skating as we exit the pandemic. This will help to re-engage the pre-pandemic membership and work towards growing our membership looking forward. Two-time World Champion Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS) will meet five-time European Champion Carolina Kostner (ITA), who returns to the Grand Prix series after not competing in it in the past three seasons. The event also features Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani (USA), Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev (RUS) and European Champions Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov (RUS). World Junior Ice Dance Champions Rachel Parsons/Michael Parsons (USA) will debut at the ISU Grand Prix.     February 6, 2020 Seoul, Korea ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2020 Day One Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA), Rika Kihira (JPN) and Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro (CAN) took the lead as the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships opened in Seoul (KOR) Thursday with the Rhythm Dance, Pairs and Ladies Short Programs. 100 skaters from 12 ISU members have been entered for this 21th edition of the Four Continents Championships: 25 Men, 21 Ladies, 11 Pair Skating couples and 16 Ice Dance couples. Seoul has hosted the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championship once before in 2015. Hubbell/Donohue (USA) edge Chock/Bates (USA) in Rhythm Dance in Seoul Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue (USA) edged teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates by just 0.19 points in the Rhythm Dance. Canada’s Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier are not far behind in third place. Skating to “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”, Hubbell/Donohue picked up a level four for the twizzles, the straight line lift and the Finnstep Pattern Dance sequence while the Pattern Dance type step sequence and the midline step sequence were rated a level three. The 2019 World bronze medalists achieved a season’s best with 85.95 points. “It’s been a quick turnaround between Nationals and Four Continents. We really wanted to focus on being precise and confident and we feel like we did that today,” Hubbell said. “So our main focus was the mental aspect, staying focused and really putting out a performance that would be competitive here in this field and we accomplished that

Among those competing for a spot are two-time World Champions Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford (CAN), two-time World medalists Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani (USA) and Four Continents Champion Nathan Chen (USA). Bridgestone Skate America is the sixth and last event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series that culminates in the Final. ISU World Figure Skating Ice Dance silver medalists Victoria Sinitsina/Nikita Katsapalov (RUS) have just won their first ISU Grand Prix gold medal at Shiseido Cup of China last week and want to seal their spot. The Four Continents Championships 2017 serve as a test event for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir (CAN) dance off with gold Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada danced off with the gold medal, taking home their third Four Continents title. USA’s Maia Shibutani/ Alex Shibutani earned the silver medal and their teammates Madison Chock/Evan Bates claimed the bronze. Virtue/Moir delivered a strong Free Dance to “Pilgrims on a Long Journey” and “Latch”, collecting a level four for their lifts, the twizzles, the diagonal step sequence and the spin and a level three for the circular step sequence. The 2014 Olympic silver medalists set a new personal best with 117.20 points and accumulated 196.95 points overall. “What an honor for Tessa and I to be Four Continents Champions. It was obviously a goal of ours just to qualify for this event at the beginning of the year. It was such a great competition. Today was an interesting performance for us as we left a couple of points on the board, but it was really special for us to be in that venue.

    2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships January 13 – 20, 2019 Saint John, New Brunswick A not-for-profit organization, Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is the oldest and largest figure skating organization in the world and is recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) as the governing body for the sport of figure skating in Canada. Skate Canada/Patinage Canada is dedicated to creating a nation of skaters both recreationally and competitively. Skate NB / Patinage NB is the governing section in New Brunswick and is comprised of 35 clubs organized into regions. Region 4 encompasses Saint John, Quispamsis and Sussex. The 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships will be hosted by Region 4 from January 13-20, 2019, at Harbour Station and QPlex, respectively. The championships will feature approximately 250 of the country’s best skaters in the men, women, pairs, and dance disciplines, competing in three levels: senior, junior, and novice. This will be the first national championships following Canada’s very successful 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It is expected that 2018 World Bronze medalists and Olympians, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, will be competing in Saint John in senior dance. Additionally, Olympians Gabrielle Daleman, Keegan Messing, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier and the next cohort of Canadian skating talent will be featured. The pre-eminent national championships will see athletes vie for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2019 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, 2019 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and 2019 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
