• 66900 Rothschild Archive Review
Review of the year’s work Melanie Aspey, Director of The Rothschild Archive Research The recorded numbers of researchers using the Archive’s resources in 2005 to 2006 saw an increase over the previous year. Scores of enquiries reached the Archive via the web site and the archivists answered questions for researchers on a diverse range of topics. Financial and eco- nomic historians researched French loans to Russia, Rothschild oil interests, the relationship between the Rothschild and Warburg banks and a history of early letters of credit. Art histori- ans found useful resources in the Archive to support research into pictures by van der Meulen, Degas, Gainsborough and van Huysum, as well as photographers, cabinet makers, interior dec- orators and art dealers associated with members of the Rothschild family. Enquiries about the history of Rothschild properties were also numerous, such as Boulogne and Grasse in France, the Luisenhof in Frankfurt, and the Pleasaunce in Norfolk. Over 50 individuals worked in the Archive’s London reading room during the year. The results of research undertaken by Professor Richard Smethurst (for a life of the Japanese politi- cian Takahashi) and Dr Jonathan Conlin (for a history of the National Gallery) are presented in this Review. Bob Pullen of the University of the Arts London made a detailed study of the Archive’s photographic collections for inclusion on a web-based directory of photographic ₁ resources in the UK. His research identified a number of unusual and notable items in the Archive’s photographic holdings. The Archive’s web site carries information about Rothschild Archive Bursaries, which are available to researchers in full-time education and engaged in projects that involve extensive use of the resources of the Archive.

THE SPREAD OF MODERN INDUSTRIALIZATION IN THE 19TH CENTURY: THE ‘SLOW INDUSTRIALIZATION’ OF FRANCE, 1789 - 1914 E. FRANCE: Business Organization and Banking during the 18th and 19th Centuries (to World War I) E. FRANCE: Business Organization and Banking during the 18th and 19th Centuries (to World War I) 1. Business Organization in 19th Century France a) There were three main forms of companies or business organization: one of which was, perhaps surprisingly, more advanced in many respects than those of Britain before the 1850s. i) société en nom collectif: (1) simple partnerships: with unlimited liability for all partners. (2) This included as well many family firms (though not all were organized as partnerships). ii) société en commandite: very different from any British business organization, and in many respects superior to British company organization before the coming of limited liability corporations in the 1850s (1) a special form of partnership, with complete, unlimited liability for all the active, managing partners; (2) but with limited liability for all other investing partners: the so-called sleeping partners, who merely invested funds into the company. (3) this curious form of partnership dates from at least the later 17th century (about 1679), # at least in formal legislation # and probably much earlier, owing its origin to the medieval Italian commenda contracts; # the medieval commenda contracts similarly provided limited liability to those ‘silent’ investors who supplied only capital but no enterprise: i.e., did not participate directly in the business venture.
