Sat Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus: Tippet – ‘A Child of Our Time’ (with Halle Orchestra) 6th 7.00pm Tippett's moving oratorio was inspired by the assassination in 1938 of a German diplomat by a young Jewish refugee, and the Nazi government's reaction in the form of a violent pogrom against its Jewish population - the Kristallnacht. Sat Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust: Volunteer work day on Blacka Moor 6th Blacka Moor is on the A625 out of Sheffield a few hundred yards on the left before Fox House. 10am – 3pm Practical volunteer days at Blacka Moor are held on the first Saturday and third Thursday every month. Tasks vary from footpath improvements and access work, to habitat and vegetation management. Gloves, tools, and refreshments are provided, but wear suitable outdoor clothes and boots, and bring some lunch and drinking water if you're able to come for the whole day. Mon Friends of Bishop’s House: ‘The Romans at Whirlow and the Forgotten Frontier’ 8th Bishop’s House, Lane 7.30pm This talk will describe the unexpected discovery of a complex of Roman sites around the Whirlow area and the archaeological investigations. The findings are then related to the broader context of the Roman invasion of Britain and the re-discovery of an early Roman frontier running right through Sheffield.

Wed Totley History Group: ‘Refractories and Ganister Mining: the Forgotten Industries’. 24th Totley Library, Baslow Road 7.30pm Parts of the Pennine slopes on the western edge of Sheffield abound with the 19th and early 20th century remnants of ganister and other clay mining, both above and below the ground. An industry that had once employed hundreds of men has now all but passed into obscurity. Non members welcome
