President’s Report

Welcome all to our February Drivers Journal. I am always impressed with the quality of the Journal – the range of topics, reams of useful information and the insightful stories behind members’ cars. We are fortunate that we have a “top class” editor who puts much time and effort in delivering the Journal in a timely manner. Excluding Brendan’s input (which we cannot put a value on), each monthly issue costs the club in excess of $3 per month for each individual Journal. Somewhere around $40 PA back to members. This figure includes paper, envelopes, printing costs, stamps etc. Now, isn’t that great value? I suggest better value than the Sunday edition of the Herald Sun and no Fake News either! All good stuff. January has been extremely hot and this has reflected in attendances at functions and events. Quite a number of club members celebrated Australia Day in Mooroopna and provided a range of vehicles, much to the enjoyment of the public who asked many questions and reminisced about the “good old days”. My drive home was relatively short, but I did have sympathy for those that had ventured from further afield and without air conditioning! The Shepparton News was in attendance and I noticed a couple of our members were in Monday’s paper. As noted at the January club general meeting, the Defibrillator has arrived and appropriate training will be arranged for our membership in the coming weeks. Wally Smilie from the training company has been in contact and is keen to provide professional advice and direction – there will also be a CPR update. This will be a great opportunity to tune up our skills, especially for those venturing off to the upcoming rallies. Put your thinking caps on and suggest a date or two. He is happy to deliver the training on a Saturday. You may have noticed also that a couple of new concrete pads have been poured in and around the hall entrance, allowing better Disabled parking facilities. By moving the site further to the East this allows much more room and eases congestion around the entry ramp. Our thanks to Lloyd Healey, Greg Sutherland and others from the building committee who have put in much sweat to prepare the site for the pour. We are still looking at upgrading the PA system, computer and facilities in the library – watch this space. Also some time in the near future, GMW will be rebuilding the bridge/entrance to the club grounds. This will take the better part of a week to accomplish and if you need to access the site perhaps the southern entrance would be best – we will advise details ASAP. Regards to all and catch you at the February meeting. Bill Winters From the Editor The club’s annual twilight run to Nathalia was very well attended, as it always is, and was a very enjoyable social night. Well done to Jack and Robyn Nind, who turned up in the biggest Red Plate vehicle I’ve ever seen! Australia Day in Mooroopna was also enjoyable. I was a bit surprised to see Lisa Edwards singing and Michael Cristiano playing guitar – I had seen them performing Skyhooks songs with Bob Starkie the previous weekend at the Mulwala Water Ski Club! Both very talented. Red Plate Day is the big Club event this month. It’s a chance to get our vehicles checked over to ensure they’re in good running order. It’s another great social day, with lunch under the trees in the Grieve back yard. Members will find a membership list enclosed with this Journal. I hope all the information is correct! See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are. Brendan Walsh

If you’re not receiving a monthly email advising of a new Journal Please turn being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send off your mobile a message to the Club’s email address (top of page 2) and I’ll add you to phone at the the list. Over 140 members now get this monthly message. Club meeting!

February 2018 Coming Up

**Monthly Club Meeting, Clubrooms – 8th February 2018 This month’s guest speaker will be Senior Constable Neil Johnson from the Shepparton Traffic Management Unit.

**Red Plate Day, John and Jenny Grieve’s – from 9am, 11th February 2018 This is a great opportunity to have your car checked for safety by some of the experienced mechanics in the Club. For those of us that aren’t mechanics, issues can develop which we aren’t aware of, which could bite us (yes; that happens to mechanics too!). This is particularly desirable if you are taking the car on one of the Club touring rallies. The Club goes to some effort to make this service available to members, so if your special car hasn’t been checked for some time, why not bring it along and put it over the pit? John and Jenny host us in their delightful garden for a BBQ lunch after the checking is done. Even if you don’t want to have your car checked out, this is a great social event. BYO chair. Thanks John and Jenny and helpers – you have been looking after us for longer than I have been in the Club. We do appreciate it.

**Ladies’ Lunch, Shepparton – 16th February 2018 I look forward to seeing you all at our next lunch which is on Friday 16th February, 12 noon at the new cafe opposite Scots Church – I’m not sure what it is called!!! Coffee Run to Le Penelope’s, Kirwans Bridge Road, Nagambie – from 10 am, Wednesday 21 February 2018 That’s right, this Club runs on coffee! Many of us went to this venue after the Nagambie MGs run last year, and thoroughly enjoyed it. As nothing exceeds like excess, let’s do it again! Perhaps the best way to get there is to travel to Kirwans Bridge through Murchison on the Murchison-Goulburn Weir Road, cross Kirwans Bridge, and the café is some 600m on the right, just around the bend. I look forward to seeing you there.

Twilight Run to Nathalia, Broken Creek Foreshore – 14th January 2018 Once again, this traditional picnic run was very popular, with some 120 members and guests enjoying the venue and the company. The vehicles as seen in the attendance record below ranged from fleets of Morris Minors and sports cars to a Rolls and a pristine Peterbilt prime mover – a great car show beside the creek! Well done Jock and the Nathalia crew for putting on a great venue for us (again)! It was a pity that the cold wind got up and sent us home perhaps earlier than we would have otherwise – but it was a great Club outing, wasn’t it?

Australia Day Ceremony, Mooroopna & Cheeky Grog Co, Bunbartha Lunch - 26th January 2018 The Australia Day ceremony at Mooroopna is also a traditional outing for us. It is good for us to be involved in the ceremony, and to add to it by providing a great classic car display for the Mooroopna community. Saturday Social Day, Clubrooms – 20th January 2018 Our Saturday social day held on the 20th January brought many familiar faces and four visitors. We enjoyed a variety of cold meats and salad, followed by some nice sweets. Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed a salad. There were many lucky winners in our raffle. Keith brought along eight different jugs from his beautiful collection. Everyone is invited to bring anything of interest to share. It is nice to see so many people enjoying each other’s company and sharing ideas over lunch. There was interest shown in attending the Tatura Museum after our Saturday social day on the 17th February.

After a couple of weeks of hot weather, it was good to get out in the cooler weather, even if the cars got a bit wet! Some 34 members enjoyed their caffeine and pastry, not to mention the drive and the company. Alan Lavis

February 2018 Rally Report

Ford Coupe Club Hardtop Anniversary Rally, Bathurst NSW – 9th-12th November 2017 The Ford Coupe Club has been holding its national rally in Echuca every two years since 2007. In 2017 it was moved to Bathurst to commemorate the famous 1-2 finish 40 years ago. Both those cars are in the Mt Panorama National Motor Racing Museum at the moment. Special guests for the weekend included Murray Carter, Allan Moffatt, and Fred Gibson. The rally started Friday with a look through the museum and a talk by Colin Russell (Moffatt’s diff and gearbox mechanic) and Peter Malloy (Moffatt’s engine builder). Both spoke about their experiences at Mt Panorama and with other types of racing. Several cruises were held on the Saturday. At the evening event, the guest speaker was Chris Bitmead, owner of X-Boss, a very modified XB coupe that was finished by Maskell Restorations in Shepparton. It went to the US and finished in the top eight at the Detroit Autorama, a top modified car show. The show and shine was held in pit lane on Sunday. All 140 coupes were lined up, along with the two 1977 winning coupes. The first guest speaker at the presentation dinner that night was Christine Gibson (Cole), who spoke of her racing history that included nine races. The most famous was in 1981 when she and Bobby Morris collided on top of the mountain on lap 121, effectively stopping the race. Colin Bond and Allan Moffatt also spoke about their racing histories. They then presented the trophies to the winners of the nine categories. The organisers of this event did an amazing job, organising it from Melbourne, 780km away. Entries came from every state and all had a great time. Brian Boschetti
