SECRETARY'S REPORT

Dear Members,

The 2002/03 season brought about on-going changes and developments for the Association. I will review the main points.

Representative Season

The Association’s team was victorious in all three games in which it participated. This was a great effort considering that selection is only available to lower grade players. There were two captains for the three games, who both did sterling jobs. There is a greater commentary in the section of this report dedicated to the representative season.

Teams

This season saw a reduction in the number of teams from previous seasons, down to 45. As a result there were only 6 grades. There were some club and team mergers, without which there would have been an even greater reduction in the number of teams.

A meeting of the first and second grade teams prior to the season decided that the experiment to participate in a combined competition with Canterbury – Wests adopted in the previous season would not continue. To their credit, the teams felt that the Association should stand on its own. Unfortunately, not all teams ultimately called to play in the top grades believed that they should have been there, nonetheless it was a good competition, even if there were only 6 teams in 1st grade.

The Board believes that the premier grade should have a full compliment of 8 teams and it is expected that this will be the case next season.

The dominance of first grade by Souths Juniors ended with a new premier in that grade. This may encourage teams to aspire to the grade without the fear of dominance, as has been the case, by this strong team since the inception of this Association.

New Points System

A new system of awarding bonus points for lodgement of result sheets and attendance at Delegates’ meetings has proven to be successful. No longer are fines being imposed, which was an additional task for the treasurer. There has been a significant increase in compliance as a result, making it much easier to administer and run the competition.

5 Premiers

True to form only 2 grades saw the minor premiers take out the premiership. The mantle of being minor premiers, even by a considerable margin is no guarantee of the premiership.

Website

The Association has now used the website provided by Cricket NSW to great effect. It is managed mainly by Dave Power. We are aware the number of visits to the site can be above 2000 at peak times. The site contains much of the information clubs will need. It contains draws, results, points tables, playing rules, the constitution, various forms etc.

The day may not be too far away when result sheets will be lodged electronically. The website is a convenient and major source of information for clubs, teams, players and new teams etc. We will look to expand the services we provide to members using this medium.

Judiciary

Unfortunately, I have to report that this season saw an unprecedented number of matters that had to be heard. Reports were double the number of previous seasons, even though there were some 100 less players. The independent judiciary is working well in providing the Association with truly independent arbiters. A vote of thanks to them from the Board.

Wickets

The Association intends participating (financially) in the total upgrade of all 4 Rowland Park in readiness for the 2003/04 season. The cost is around $30,000 with contributions from Botany Council, the ACB, our Association and hopefully the Junior Cricket Association. This should provide better conditions, although the placement of the wickets cannot change due to drainage channels and the positioning of winter sport grounds.

The Sydney Boys High School wickets proved to be of the best quality, although parking presents problems. We are working on this in the off-season.

Finance

The Associations finances are in a good position, although we will need to find considerable funds for the Rowland upgrade. Most teams honoured their financial commitments in a timely manner during the season, which is appreciated, given that the Association pays most of its major expenses in advance of fees being received. These expenses include insurance and fees with some councils.

6 Insurance

The Delegates voted to have personal injury insurance for players. The main thrust for this initiative came about as a result of some terrible head and face injuries from the previous season. There were quite a few claims in 2002/03, ranging from facial injuries to dislocations and strains. The costs of the insurance were passed on to clubs at cost.

There was still the usual number of property damage claims. There could be significant premium increases next season if the number of claims under both policies continues to rise.

The Board also received correspondence from the ACB regarding the liability of Association office bearers. This relates to personal claims arising against Board members in the event of negligence. This is a matter of concern to all voluntary officials. It is no longer sufficient to claim immunity from liability under incorporation laws. Our Association has professional indemnity insurance, and it is hoped that it is never called upon, or else there will be very few people prepared to volunteer their time and services to run such a competition.

The Board

The constitution of the Board saw once again new members join and the departure of others. It is still made up of a core of people who have offered their services for considerable lengths of time. It is these people who make the Association work, perhaps not always to the liking of all clubs, but nonetheless efficiently for the overall good of the game.

Farewell

I have announced to the Board that I will not be seeking re-election to the Board next season. I have been secretary for 6 seasons and it is time to move on. I hope that a capable person will step forward and take on the responsibility of the position. It is a challenging and rewarding position.

It is with a degree of sadness that I bid farewell to the Board. I must give special mention to John Chalmers, whom everyone involved with cricket in the Association would know. John has been a close friend and we have enjoyed a mutual love of the game and the Association.

There is a band of willing core workers on the Board that I have now known for many years, including Paul Brien, David Power and the Fulfords that I also say farewell to. I leave the Association in hopefully a better condition than when I first joined. It is through the initiatives of the Board that we aim to provide cricket to the best standard. I am sure that most involved with our Association will appreciate this fact.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has now been eight seasons since three great Associations (Moore Park Cricket Association, Catholic Cricket Association and South Sydney Cricket Association) combined to form the Moore Park and South East Cricket Association. This amalgamation was necessary if there was to be a strong, viable park cricket competition in Sydney’s Eastern and South Eastern suburbs. Season 2002-2003 is evidence of the successful amalgamation.

The season saw three new teams being St Pauls College, Ryans Hotel and St George Dragons. The Association was made up of 46 teams over 6 grades in a very healthy and competitive competition, with most semifinal spots in the various grades undecided until the final round of competition. I congratulate all the Premiership and Minor Premiership winners. A special congratulations to Ryan’s Hotel, who in there first season have won the 6th grade Premiership … well done. My congratulations also to all of the individual trophy winners listed in this report, there are some remarkable efforts that ensure our competition is of an exceptionally high standard.

This season again saw the Association compete against Sydney Morning, Northern Suburbs and Bathurst Cricket Associations. Under the captaincy of Peter Cooley (Yarra Bay) we retained the A.T. RAY trophy and accounted for Northern Suburbs. This is the third consecutive year we have won the A.T. RAY and second time we have beaten Northern Suburbs … both these Associations have yet to register a win against us! In the return match, at home against Bathurst C.A. we managed to turn last years defeat into a comprehensive victory under the astute captaincy of Richard Bilkie (G.S.N.D.S). My thanks to our Manager, John Walden, scorer Marie Fulford and umpire Gary Fulford for their assistance on the days. Thanks to Peter Cooley and Richard Bilkie, our Captains and to all the players for not only a great rep season, but for the manner in which you all conducted yourselves in representing your Association.

Whilst the successes and congratulations are recorded it is with regret that I report the passing of life members Frank Casey and Joe Hamilton. The Association was also touched with the passing of Shane Foley (Mascot RSL) in the Bali tragedy. On behalf of the Board and all members our sincerest sympathy to the families and friends of these three men who will not be forgotten.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Barry Casey as a life member of the Association. Barry has been involved with park cricket since 1969 and has been President of Doncaster C.C. since its formation in 1984/85. He has played over 340 matches in his 32 seasons of cricket. His late father Frank Casey was also a life member. Congratulations and welcome to our newest life member.

8 An Association cannot survive with out sponsors and I extend on behalf of the Board and all members our thanks to Souths Juniors for their financial assistance. Thanks also to Harry Solomon and the team at Kingsgrove Sports for their kind donation. Also to Kensington RSL who allow us use of their club for the various meetings throughout the year.

The Association is fortunate to have its own independent Judiciary. Whilst this season saw an extraordinary increase in matters heard I congratulate Chairman Ben Grant and his team on their handling of all matters brought before them.

The season saw improvements made to some wickets thanks to the tireless efforts of ground coordinator John Chalmers, thanks John. Whilst talking of grounds, a thank you to all Councils and the Centennial Park Trust for keeping our playing areas in good condition each week. My thanks also to Peter Daffen and his team at Alan Davidson Oval, which was used, and is recognized as one of the leading turf wickets in Sydney.

A special mention to our retiring Secretary John Walden, who after six years in the job has decided to retire. My personal thanks to John for his support and his professional approach to the tasks he has undertaken over the years. My thanks also to all Board members not only for the time these volunteers put in, but for their support and contribution that makes it a lot easier for me to head up this great Association.

My thanks to all players, members and supporters of the Association, for your contribution in making the Moore Park and South East Cricket Association a strong, viable park cricket association.

In conclusion, this season saw me complete 25 years as a President of Moore Park and now Moore Park and South East Cricket Associations. I was quite touched with the special presentation made to me at our presentation evening … my sincere thanks. I remember well my early years and recall the friendships I have made in the past 25 years. I believe that we have a strongly knit group of people who will ensure that cricket is played at park level in Sydney’s East for many years to come.

I look forward to seeing you again in 2003-2004 where we will have more challenges with Rowland Park about to have new wickets laid. See you on the park.

GENERAL REPORTS

FIRST TO SIXTH GRADE

10

FIRST GRADE REPORT

This season’s first grade competition saw us revert to our own premier grade competition made up of six teams from the MP&SECA competition playing each other on three occasions during the normal rounds. I would like to thank the teams that participated in helping make first grade once again a competitive force made up solely of MP&SECA teams.

Clovelly RSL

Clovelly RSL claimed their first top grade premiership trophy with a resounding win over Souths Juniors in the final of the competition. Clovelly seemed to get better the longer the competition went and finished in second place on the ladder after the 15 rounds of the competition. They then proceeded to narrowly beat Captain Cook Hotel in the semi-final and then batted extremely well in the final against Souths to claim their first title. In the department Clovelly’s best were Glen Bosco 417 runs at 32.08 average, Dave Kornits 378 at 29.08, M. Roucek 354 at 22.13 & R. Coulson 279 at 25.36. Clovelly’s wickets were shared between Andy Faulkner 37 wickets at 15.95 average, M. Baird 28 at 22.57, and John Astuy 24 at 18.00. R. Coulson & Andy Faulkner polled the most Player’s Player points with 13 each.

Souths Juniors

Souths Juniors once again performed solidly all season to claim the minor premiership but were beaten in the final for the second year in a row. Prior to last season Souths had won every first grade final contested since the MP&SECA was formed. Souths had many solid performers with the bat, the best being Anthony Sinclair 393 at 43.67, A. Crawley 352 at 29.33, and Eli Kapodistrias 339 at 33.9. Leading wicket takers were Eli Kapodistrias 26 wkts at 18.69, P. Lazaropoulos 26 at 18.12, Anthony Sinclair 24 at 16.04 and Jason Coleman 20 at 15.75. Eli claimed the most Player’s Player votes with 17.

Captain Cook Hotel

Captain Cook Hotel put in a strong performance right throughout the year to finish third on the ladder and then were beaten narrowly in their semi-final match against eventual premiers Clovelly RSL. Batting honours for Captain Cook were taken out by Brad Parkes 437 at 39.73 who was supported by T. Scullard 240 at 18.46. Bowling seemed to be Cook’s strong point with wickets shared by T. Scullard 32 wkts at 13.75, Steve Burgess 28 at 15.86, Brad Parkes 25 at 14.44, and B. Thorne 21 at 20.33. Brad Parkes scored extremely well in the Player’s Player poll with 24 points.

Sir Joseph Banks

Sir Joseph Banks were elevated to first grade this season and performed well to finish fourth on the premiership table. The Banks proved throughout the season that they can more than match it with the top first grade teams and came away with some good wins. 11 Leading the batting for Sir Joseph Banks were R. Raffaele with 401 runs at 30.85, G. Marashlian 300 at 21.43, B. Cooke 284 at 20.29 and Gary Hodder 243 at 22.09. Wicket takers for the Banks were Gary Hodder taking 38 wickets at 12.89, D. Cook 27 at 14.56, and S. Pearce 24 at 16.33. S. Pearce polled the most Player’s Player points with 20.

Waverley Wombats Marrickville Pagewood finished fifth on the competition ladder and just never quite recovered from a poor start to the season in the early competition rounds. R. Morris had an outstanding season scoring 509 runs at 50.9 and taking 21 wkts at 22.24. Others to perform well with the bat included Phil Girgis 395 at 43.89, D. Grange 288 at 22.15 and S. Lawson 280 at 20. S. Beier did well with the ball taking 19 wickets at 18.68. R. Morris tallied a very high 27 Player’s Player points.

After winning second grade the previous season Roy United struggled in the top grade. Roy started the season well but a combination of injuries and a loss of form saw them finish down the table at the end of the competition proper. M. Bohman led the way with the bat scoring 317 runs at 31.7 and he was well supported by P. Crawford 314 at 24.15. Leading the way in the bowling stakes for Roy was Mick Pruyn taking 32 wickets at 18.00 and also D. Newson 21 at 17.43. Mick Pruyn scored a total of 18 Player’s Player points to be his teams highest.

DAVID CHOY

14 THIRD GRADE REPORT

This season's third grade competition was an evenly fought out with any number of teams capable of taking out the title. Two upset results in the semi-finals saw the third and fourth placed teams advance to the final. In a low scoring final Edmund/Ferns/Mascot (EFM) recovered after being down and nearly out to defeat Botany Magic to deservedly win the title of third grade premiers.

Edmund/Ferns/Mascot

Edmund/Ferns/Mascot needed to win their last competition game against the minor premiers Captain Cook Hotel to scrape into the semi-finals. They did this and then beat them again in the semis before coming from behind to defeat Botany Magic in the final. EFM was well led by captain Nick Missenden who scored 751 runs at 57.77 scoring his runs at an amazing rate. Rod Staughton also had a great season scoring 540 runs at 45.00 and taking 38 wickets at 15.76. Other wicket takers for EFM were J. Simon with 23 wkts at 19.04 and B. McCann 21 wkts at 22.71. Rod Staughton not surprisingly polled well with the Player’s Player votes with 23.

Botany Magic

Botany Magic recovered from a poor start to the season to finish third on the competition table, defeat Archers in the semi-final and then went down in a close final to EFM. Batting honours were shared for Botany between Todd Olynik 398 at 33.17, David Anderson 309 at 34.33, David Choy 281 at 20.07, Mark Schulstad 242 at 20.17 and Dave Power 241 at 21.91. Among the wickets for Botany were David Anderson who had a great season taking 46 wkts at 13.83 and Todd Olynik 30 wkts at 15.77. Todd and Dave Anderson also tallied 23 points each in the Player’s Player Award.

Captain Cook Hotel

Captain Cook Hotel had a great season finishing as Minor Premiers, but unfortunately for them went down to their bogey side in EFM in the semi-final. Another team to share their runs and wickets around Captain Cook’s best in the batting department were Paul Elder 554 at 55.4, C. Kennedy 291 at 32.33, J. Rasonja 279 at 25.36, T. Gorman 255 at 23.18 and D. Phillips 210 at 21.00. Wickets were shared between J. Steel 32 at 17.00, D. McDiarmid 30 at 9.60, D. Phillips 23 at 16.7 and J. Beasley 20 at 15.25. Paul Elder polled 15 Player’s Player points to be the highest for his team.

Archers

Archers finished the season proper in second position on the table after a disastrous start to the season and then narrowly lost in their semi-final to Botany Magic. Archers had a strong batting line up which served them well throughout the season, batsmen to stand out included B. Ward 339 at 28.25, Dave Park 301 at 23.15, M. Brincat 275 at 25.00, J. James 268 at 20.62 and T. Kassis 206 at 20.6. J. David was Archer’s star performer with the ball taking 40 wickets at 13.55 and also tallied 19 Player’s Player points. 15

Kingsford Apaches

Kingsford Apaches just failed to reach the semi-finals but showed their ability during the competition rounds by recording some good wins and were unlucky not to go further. New recruit B. Dickenson topped the batting list scoring 327 runs at 54.5 and was supported by Andrew Jones 330 at 23.57, G. Wheeler 226 at 45.2 and P. Yang 219 at 31.29. A. Vaughan took the bowling honours for Apaches snaring 21 wickets at 17.9. B. Dickenson tallied the most Player’s Player points with 14.

Men of the Bat

Men of the Bat started the season well but fell away to finish in sixth position on the ladder despite a couple of late victories. In the batting department Men of the Bat were best served by G. Stuart 396 at 39.6, D. Speiser 332 at 19.53, J. Santangelo 299 at 27.18 and M. Hunyor 238 at 39.67. Jamie Motum starred with the ball taking 39 wickets at 22.56 and also polled the most Player’s Player points with 17.

International Barbarians

International Barbarians finished down the competition table although they were in contention for a semi-final spot for the majority of the season. Heading the batting list for Barbars were S. Wilde 389 at 48.63, D. Holwerda 321 at 35.67, G. Welsman 217 at 19.73 and S. Dolan 201 at 20.1. L Gallington was Barbars most productive bowler taking 18 wickets at 15.28. S. Wilde polled the most Player’s Player points for Barbars with 12.

In their first year in this association the St George Dragons struggled at times but were always competitive and scored a couple of good wins late in the season. John Bowden was the Dragon’s best performer all season and polled the most Player’s Player points for his club with 17.

FOURTH GRADE REPORT

Waverley Wombats/Marrickville –Pagewood

This side had a very good season in taking out the 4th grade premiership. It had some outstanding performers, none better than their captain I Khan, who took out the bowling double with 59 wickets at 11.36. He was well supported by S Ghaurie who snared 32 wickets at 12.56 and M Campbell, who also snared 36 wickets at 17.4.

The batting was also a team effort with seven batsmen scoring over 150, runs with none better than S Ghaurie who topped the aggregate with 459 runs. He also took out the batting average with 45.9 and was well supported by W Sheikh who amassed 227 at a very good average of 32.43. B Turek also amassed 222 runs at 22.2. Well done guys. Congratulations to this side in taking out the 4th grade premiership in its first season as a joint venture.

GSNDS

This side was well led by Mark Johnstone and on most occasions was well served by the Bilkey brothers, Richard and Steve as well as David Winterton. The spearhead of the club was Richard Bilkey who topped the batting aggregate with 622 runs and also topped the average at 51.83. Richard was well supported by brother Steve who amassed 425 runs at an average of 85, this only with limited appearances. They were also well supported by David Winterton who amassed 306 runs at 38.25. The bowling was carried by these three guys along with Richard Bilkey, snaring 34 wickets at 14.6, brother Steve snaring 27 at 14.48 7 and David Winterton picked up 8 wickets at 33. Richard was a member of the association representative team where he also performed well.

Randwick C Y M

This side was led very capably by Matt Bond who managed to carry off everything that was on offer. Firstly, the batting aggregate where Matt amassed 616 runs at a very healthy average of 41.07. He was very well supported by Hamish Manks who amassed 505 runs at 63.13, which in fact was the batting average for this side. They were well supported by J Dean who amassed 327 at 27.25. The bowling was nearly a one man show with, once again, Matt taking 65 wickets at a very economical average of 11.38. Matt was very well supported by S McPhail who snared 35 wickets at 16.83 and Hamish Manks lent his valuable support with 14 wickets at 14.43.

Captain Cook Hotel

This side was led by the veteran Warren Searle who always led by example, he was well supported by fellow team mates who performed well during the season the batting was well shared with the ever reliable Mick Nolan topping the aggregate with 403 runs at 36.6 and he was well supported by Zane Burnside who scored 300 at 17.6. The ever reliable Glen Blacker chipped in with 262 at 17.4 and D Harper with 234 at 29.2. 17

The bowling was shared by J Smith topping the list and W Searle captured 22 wickets at 28.9. These guys were well supported by S Wade who also gave a very credible performance every time he was given the ball taking 22.7. One other bowler who also performed extremely well when given a chance was J Heiler with his left arm spin variety taking 23 at 13.4. He also took a hat-trick against GSNDS, who at the time of him coming on looked like breaking all sorts of batting records. This team never seemed to have a steady side during the season, but performed well.

Edmumns/Ferns/Mascot

This side should have performed a lot better than it did during the season, as no less than 7 batsmen scored over 120 runs. The outstanding batting performances were from Michael Manna who scored 844 runs at 64.9 and A Barbetti who amassed 666 runs at 47.5. The bowling was also shared by no less than 5 players taking more than 15 wickets each, with the leading bowler being N Vitetzakis with 35 wickets at 12.6 and A Barbetti 29 at 15.1, and M Manna chipping in with 19 at 16.9, and T Lolis snaring 17.8 and collier with 25 at 25.

Souths Juniors

This side on paper was a very good side with a sprinkling of experienced higher grade players. The batting was led by a very experienced Wayne Mitchell, who in fact took out the batting double with an aggregate of 296 runs and a very healthy average of 26.9. He was ably supported by Matt Capon who scored 222 runs at a good average of 22.2 and Austin Miller who also kept the scorer busy scoring 175 at 20.5 and the veteran of the club Greg Stewart who recorded 172 at 17.2. The bowling was very well shared by A Radford who snared 24 wickets at 18.7 and Austin Miller, who also snared 24 wickets at 20.5, and Kris Wylie who, with limited appearance in this side, snared 20 victims at 13.3. With a bit more luck this side could have performed a lot better.

Doncaster

This team saw an all-round effort during the season with 8 batsmen getting over 120 runs, with none better than A Azhar topping the list with 551 at 27.5. Next in line was S Spears with 366 at 20.3. H Pickering with 167 AT 11.1. The bowling was well shared with 5 bowlers getting into double figures with A Axhar topping the list with 23 wickets at 20.9. He was supported by M McClement with 16 at 23.8 and M Lukas and J Fatafehi both snaring 12 victims each at 35.9 and 31.5. This side in fact was made up of a few players who made a junior rep side who went on a tour of New Zealand and performed quite well over the Tasman. This side will only get better so watch for these guys pushing for a spot in the Donnies 2nd grade side in future years.

Clovelly R S L

This side performed extremely well during the season and came within a whisker of winning the competition. It was led by Michael Spooner. There were some outstanding performances, but none better than the veteran Steve Millar who not only took out the bowling aggregate with 47 wickets, he also took the average at a very healthy 10.15 to be outdone he also took 9 catches. Steve was very well supported by Billy Saracoglu who took 46 wickets at a healthy average of 16.13. Billy also took 6 catches. The batting was well shared with 5 batsmen amassing over 150 runs each during the season. The best W Brigh, who amassed 304 runs at average of 33.78, he was also well supported by Billy Saracoglu who amassed 271 runs at average of 19.36. Well done Clovelly R S L who will certainly hope to go one better next season.

FIFTH GRADE REPORT

GCB

The GCB finished as clear minor premiers and eventual premiers. Winning all but two of their games (and one washout) through the season, they went into the finals with confidence and emerged victorious. Looking at the stats, the reason for this becomes obvious, with C McGuire scoring 985 runs at a massive 140.7 through the season. Ably supported by T Roberts with 591 at 59.1, E Klein with 276 at 47.0, C Rao with 261 at 26.1 and I McNeilly with 204 at 22.67, this meant their bowlers always had a target to aim at. With the honours shared in the bowling between J McLeod with 24 at 24.83, V Roa with 19 wickets at 19.21, C Rao with 19 at 20.42 and a number of other players chipping in through the season, that target was rarely met by the opposition. C McGuire was also the number one keeper for the team taking 9 catches behind the stumps.

Randwick CYM3

Consistent performances throughout the year saw the Randwick CYM side always near the top of the table, with an outright loss in the last round slipping them into second place. F Madon with 593 runs at 84.7 and J Abayasekera with 465 at 58.1 provided the backbone of the batting with able support from D Madon (281 runs at 25.6), J Budevsky (253 at 36.1) and C Panopoulos (238 at 21.6). A Banguru was the workhorse of the bowling attack, bowling twice as many overs as any other player and ending the season with 29 wickets at 21.9. Five other players took 10 wickets or more in support - H Subasinghe 19 at 17.5, F Madon 15 at 20.0, J Budevsky 12 at 18.2, K Ghassah 12 at 20.8 and S Barclay 10 at 25.7. J Budevsky also had an outstanding year in the field taking 12 catches, and V Sharma also took 12 catches at keeper.

Cricketers Arms

It was a season of ups and downs for the Cricketers Arms - they were never able to string together more then three wins in a row. Mixed in with a couple of outrights, including in the final round over Randwick, they snatched 3rd spot in the regular season. A Lang contributed 378 runs at 27.0 with strong support from P O'Hanlon with 324 at 54.0 and A Burton with 323 at 24.9. J Holland was the teams strike bowler with 36 at 10.1 supported by P Thurling with 18 at 23.9 and A Lang 15 at 16.5. J Harvey took 10 catches at keeper with three players taking 5 catches in the filed - G Johnstone, A Burton and J Joseph

Glebe Gypsies

A strong showing early in the season saw the Gypsies in a strong position, but they faded down the straight with some tight losses to eventually finish fourth in the regular season. A mixture of youth and experience with contributions from a large number of players was their hallmark. Batting saw only three players score more then 200 for the season (D Coleman 284 at 28.4, J Gray 270 at 22.5 and C Hamilton 231 at 25.7) but 20 another 6 players score more than 100 runs. The bowling was also spread across a number of players, with T Barnett taking 27 at 16.4 and N Cohen taking 18 at 21.1 and A Wawrzyniak also taking 18 at 19.1. D Archer was the premier keeper with 6 catches and both C Hamilton and J Gray taking 7 catches in the field.

Captain Cook Hotel

After a disastrous start to the season, losing their first 5 games, the Captain Cook Hotel came home with a wet sail, eventually falling just short of earning a spot in the finals. With their batsmen, M Cornell with 526 runs at 65.8 and D Noble with 499 at 31.2 scored a third of the teams runs between them with only R Marchant with 222 at 27.8 and M Wharf with 237 at 39.5 topping 200 runs. Their bowling lacked penetration, especially early in the season, with P Newlyn picking up 22 wickets at 20.9 and the other bowlers sharing the wickets around, with D Noble backing up from the batting taking 18 at 27.1, J Noble taking 16 for 20.6, N Ottosan 15 at 27 and M Wharf 15 at 14.2. Wicket keeping honours were shared between M Hickson and I Waller with 5 each, but J Noble outshone them with 8 catches in the field.

Yarra Bay

A season of mixed results and difficulties having a full team on the park meant Yarra Bay were always in the hunt for a finals berth, falling just short. J Harkins led the batting in limited appearances with 310 at 51.7. Support cam from D Hookey with 276 at 27.6, W Anderson with 257 at 32.1, B McPherson with 250 at 41.7 and A Deguara with 211 at 23.4. This batting was backed up by their three strike bowlers, who took three quarters of the wickets between them: D Hookey 37 at 17.2, B Deguara 20 at 15.6 and W Anderson 20 at 22.1.

Kingsford Apaches

After using a possibly record number of players for one team, the Apaches found consistency was the missing key ingredient for a successful team. With only 4 players from the 39 playing more then two thirds of the season, the batting was led by G Uncle with 309 at 25.8 with support from D Waterson with 267 at 44.5. S Byrne with 15 wickets at 20.1 and G Uncle with 14 wickets at 17.71 were the pick of the bowlers while D Waterson took keeping honours with 4 catches.

Souths Juniors

A disappointing year for the Juniors, winning only one match in the season and duking it out with Apaches for the spoon all the way. J Palsingh led with the bat scoring 366 at 26.1 and four other players scored 100 runs for the season - G Sims 174 at 21.8, I Mills 149 at 13.55 A Plum 133 at 12.1 and D Callen 120 at 10.0. W Stewart led the bowling with 20 at 23.85, with support from D Callen 11 at 36.3 and I Mills 10 at 20.2.

TIM BOOTH 21 SIXTH GRADE REPORT

The Rusty Shovel

Boasting the best-kept scorebook in the entire competition, the Rusty Shovel XI were welcome additions to 6th grade in 2002/03. Well led by skipper Mark Stott, the Rustie’s strength lay in their batting-principally that of Dave McVey (596 runs at 49.67), Craig Wealands (321runs at 24.69) and Stott himself (473 runs at 29.56). Finals contenders throughout the season, the Rusty Shovel campaign suffered at times through lack of player numbers. Eventual semi-finalists, they were unlucky not to progress further and will surely be major contenders for the title in 2003/04. Dave McVey took player’s player honours for the side with 22 points, earned with such performances as a thrilling 165 runs in a 314 run opening stand with Mark Stott that many witnesses described as ‘unforgettable’, including the opposition bowlers.

Randwick CYM 4

Minor premiers Randwick CYM 4 were the form team of the grade throughout the summer. Ably led by John Walden, Randwick featured a particularly strong batting lineup, supported by the consistent bowling of Mitch de los Mozos, Mark Prociv, J. Ford and Keith Levell. 6th Grade batting honours were awarded to opener Greg Bramley (721 runs at 60.08), who received 22 player’s player points, along with all-rounder Luke Tucker (452 runs at 45.2 and 18 wickets at15.83). Randwick were unfortunate not to progress to the final and will once again prove to be a force on the park next season.

Kingsford Apaches 3

Featuring no less than 34 players throughout the summer, Kingsford Apaches 3 this year was a blend of new talent and seasoned park cricketers who never failed to entertain. Notable efforts from Samit Chandra (16 wickets at 18), Paul McLean, Will Campbell and Cameron White ensured that the Apaches were always competitive on the field. Pat Foley scored 13 player’s player points, closely followed by White and Chandra. Among other highlights, Foley scored a match winning 71 runs in a one-day game and typified the spirit and good humor in which the Apaches played the game.

Ryan’s CC

Newcomers to the MPSECA, the Ryan’s Bar XI impressed many on their way to becoming 6th grade premiers this summer. Blessed with a genuine new ball partnership in Andrew Walkom (20 wickets at 22) and Karl Cooney (51 wickets at 10.59) the Ryan’s bowlers were at times unstoppable. Notable batting efforts from Sean Hanrahan (467at 25.94) and opener Duncan Kennedy ensured that the bowlers were well supported. Player’s player honours were shared between Hanrahan and captain Cooney with 24

22 points apiece. Ryan’s performed consistently throughout the summer and will no doubt be keen to return to defend their title.

Clovelly RSL 3

Featuring strong performances throughout the summer by Joe Necco (334 runs at 30.36), Dave Baird (21 wickets at 14.57) Andrew Archer (250 at 22.73) and A. Fulmar (29 at 13.86); Clovelly were unlucky not to progress to a semi final this season. Led by wicket- keeper Craig Marsom (8 catches and 4 stumpings), the team were always competitive and presented a worthy challenge to any opposition. Player’s player points were shared between Dave Baird, N. Horton and A. Fulmar with 13 apiece. With the club success in first grade likely to inspire, expect a major challenge from the Clovelly 6th grade team in 2003/04.

Saggy Green Cricket Circus

Surprising many, not least themselves, the Saggies were eventual runners-up for the summer. Boasting 6th grade player’s player highest points scorer in Robert Ball (51 wickets at 11.37) with 25 points, the team had an inconsistent season, managing to make the semi finals by virtue of three outright wins. Matthew Venables (208 runs at 34.67); Justin Kitchener (221 runs at 36.83) and Chris Beghin (333 at 25.62) provided certainty with the batting whist Ball, Michael Park ( 24 wickets at 13.88) and Andrew Diggle (17 wickets at 3.18) tormented many an opposition batting lineup. A one-wicket loss in the final will ensure that the Saggy Greens will return next summer keen to go one better.

Moore Park View

Led by the brothers Madhanagopal, Pravin (519 runs at 37.07) and Pradip (22 wickets at 14.09 – including a memorable 7/31) Moore Park View fielded 29 players throughout the summer. Always a challenge for an opposition XI, Moore Park View featured the bowling skills of spinner Andrew McConnell (23 wickets at 19) and P. Manohar (30 wickets at 12.77). James Kong kept things tidy behind the stumps with 11 catches and two stumpings (and 374 runs at 20.78). Alex Dartnell bowled without luck all summer. Player’s player points were nabbed by McConnell with 14, closely followed by Pravin Madhanagopal with 13.

W. W. and M. P. 4

It would be fair to describe Waverly Wombats and Marrickville Pagewood’s 4th side as the unluckiest in the grade. Commencing the season with 300+ runs in their opening innings, the Wombats went on to miss the semi finals by a solitary point- their round fourteen match seeing them 2 wickets shy of the outright victory they needed. 23

Noteworthy performances from all rounder Suraj Ghanda (521 runs at 40.08 and 17 wickets at 20.06) saw him receive 21 player’s player points for the season. He was well supported by C. Manning (359 runs at 29.92) with the bat and Rob Franich (30 wickets at 14.17) and Todd Taylor (23 at 15.65) with the ball. The Wombats improved greatly in the second half of the season and will prove to be formidable opponents next time summer rolls around.

REPRESENTATIVE SEASON

Representative Season

The representative season comprised what have now become the usual three games. These are against Northern Suburbs, the Sydney Morning Association (AT Ray trophy) and Bathurst District Cricket Association. The details and summary of each game follows.

Northern Suburbs (8 December 2002)

It was our turn to host the game and this year it was at Allan Davidson. NSDCA batted first and struggled to 118 all out. There was a steady stream of wickets and captain Peter Cooley led the way and his bowling was unplayable. His final figures were 10 overs, 4 wickets for 13 runs. A total of 7 bowlers were used.

A total of 119 seemed a formality, but there was a steady loss of wickets through some injudicious play and we were struggling. Michael Manna (39) and Rodney Staughton (47 not out) combined to win the match, although we were 6 wickets down when victory arrived.

A.T.Ray Trophy (12 January 2003)

This game was also at Allan Davidson. This time we batted first. There were good contributions from all batsmen. The major run scorers were Craig Maguire (74), Fred Madon (37), Ben Meyers (25x), Michael Manna (21) and Iman Khan (19). The total of 8 for 234 seemed to be a winning score, yet the Morning team would have some of the best batting conditions.

Yet again, captain Peter Cooley led the way with bowling figures of 10.5 overs, 5 wickets for 9 runs. The opposition batsmen found him too difficult to score from. The opposition at one stage was 6 for 36 in reply. They ultimately scored 124, all out.

Our opening batsman suffered a fractured thumb while batting and yours truly was called upon to don the whites and substitute in the field. The AT Ray Friendship Trophy was once again in the safekeeping of the MP&SECA.

Bathurst District ( 27 January 2003)

It was our turn to host the second game, after travelling to Bathurst the previous season. We were adamant not to be ‘bushwacked’ in playing a district senior representative side. Bathurst this time brought junior and lower grade players. We also moved the venue to Kensington Oval, due to the unavailability of Allan Davidson. It was a hot day and there was some early moisture. Bathurst won the toss and invited us to bat first.

38 There was a tremendous opening stand of 77 between Andrew Barbetti (59) and Fred Madon, which was in very quick time. There was a middle order collapse and suddenly we were in a degree of trouble. There was then a lower middle order recovery led by David Choy (61), Richard Bilkey (28), Matt Bond (28) and Ben Meyers(26) enabling us to post a total of 244, all out. Based on the batting massacre we endured the previous season it was unknown whether this would be enough, also our representative strike bowler was not playing.

Wickets fell regularly, including players who had scored heavily in their own competition the previous day. Bathurst was dismissed for 61. Four of our bowlers snared two wickets each.

‘The Plank’ ((the trophy for the match) now came to our Association for safekeeping. We found a more than capable captain in Richard Bilkey for the game, who led his side well.

I would like to thank Gary Fulford for umpiring 2 of the matches and Maria Fulford for her immaculate scoring for the whole rep season. I also acknowledge the financial and moral support of the representative season by the Board and of course the players who made themselves available.

TREASURER’S REPORT

I am pleased to present the audited financial report for the MP&SECA financial year 2002/03.

The Association has recorded an operating surplus for the year of $3473. It should be noted, however that this result incorporates as income the amount of $510 that was owed at the end of the last financial year by MP&SECA member clubs. Most of these debts have been paid in the new financial year, leaving only $260 outstanding to the Association.

In season 2002/03 the Association for the first time followed a user pays procedure for the insurance of all teams. The increase in income of $8,765 was almost exactly matched by the $8,428 paid in insurance premiums by the Association on the members’ behalf. Given the ever-increasing cost of insurance cover, this user-pays approach will need to be followed in future years. Insurance for the first time included personal injury.

In the other major areas of expenditure, costs were contained to levels similar to last year, mainly assisted by the Association running one less grade than previously. We anticipate that the major cost of ground hire is also likely to rise slightly in the coming year.

In my first year in the position of Treasurer, I would like to thank the Board of Directors and in particular Assistant Secretary, John Chalmers, for their immeasurable help and support through the year. I also would like to thank all the Clubs - paying your fees on time allows the Association to pay theirs on time.

I commend the following audited financial report to all members.
