To refute any notion of a homogeneous South and demonstrate the dynamic nature of an individual or community identity, I examine the history, song lyrics, performances, and activism of the folk-rock duo the Indigo Girls and their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. This project applies the theories of locational feminism found in Susan Stanford Friedman’s Mappings and New Southern Studies in Tara McPherson’s text Reconstructing Dixie . Analyzing the biographies, song lyrics, performances, and activism of the Indigo Girls as an archive of southern literature allows us to understand the fluid, multiplex nature of regional identity and view Atlanta as one “borderland” in a heterogeneous U.S.

This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Most of this resource is comprised of a discography of popular music recordings by LGBTQ artists. It is not meant to be complete, but many recordings still available in CD format for each artist are listed, and several are annotated. On ONE LOST DAY, musicality, whimsy, rawness, sadness and joy move through each of the 13 tracks. This theme is especially evident on the first single, “Happy in the Sorrow Key,” written by Amy Ray. “I drew from lyrics I wrote during some of my travels with the IG’s,” Amy said. “I was thinking about the things that keep us weighed down with non-acceptance and a refusal to embrace impermanence and suffering.     Roots Report: An Interview with Jimmy Webb Okee dokee folks…One of the biggest legends in the songwriting world is coming to the Greenwich Odeum on October 25. Most “civilians” may not know the name Jimmy Webb, but we songwriters sure do! Webb is responsible for some for some of the greatest and memorable songs of ALL TIME including “Up, Up and Away,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “The Worst That Could Happen,” “All I Know” and “MacArthur Park.” A Jimmy Webb show is extremely entertaining. He performs many of his classic hits (on piano & vocals) and tells great stories behind them as well of his experiences with other artists. Glen Campbell was one of his good friends of his and talks a lot about this and collaborations with others such as Linda Rondstat, Art Garfunkel, and Carly Simon. I had a VERY long conversation with Jimmy Webb a few years back and spoke with him again recently. Jimmy Webb: Hello, John John Fuzek: Hi, Jimmy, how are you? JW: Oh, I’m pretty good, I just had five gigs in a row and I’m a little bit hoarse. JF: I know the feeling all too well, I can empathize JW: I’m ok, I’m fit, I’m certified for an interview, though I may cough every once in a while JF: (laughs) Where did you just play? JW: I played, umm, two gigs in San Diego, then I went up to Seattle and I played two gigs up there, then I had one in Portland, then I flew back, I got back late last night JF: you’re out on Long Island, right? These songs are rooted in tradition and inventive, too: nourished in dark soils, leafing and luminous. Memories here are more than specters; they are evolutions.   • The Roots Report: Indigo Girls
    The Roots Report: Indigo Girls Okee dokee folks… Thursday night the enduring duo Indigo Girls performed a show, accompanied by Francisco Noya and the RI Philharmonic, to an enthusiastic audience of about 2,300 at Providence Performing Arts Center. The Indigo Girls dominated the Newport Folk Festival during the early ’90s and were a fan favorite for most of that decade. They have played the area many, many times over the ensuing years and this recent show had 65+ musicians playing along with them. I believe this is the second (maybe third) time that they have performed this show at PPAC. Each time they present this show it is a treat. Thursday night was no exception. The “Girls” played a 17-song, two-set show that included selctions from some of their 30+ year catalogue of recordings: Swamp Ophelia, Beauty Queen Sister, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug, One Lost Day, Rites of Passage, 1200 Curfews and, of course their eponymous release Indigo Girls. Unfortunately, performing with a band of such size and type has its limitations and restrictions — no requests, no encore, much to the dismay of the screaming fans — but on the other end you hear songs with strings, brass and woodwinds like you have never heard them before. Though the orchestra rehearses the arrangements in depth before the performance, they only get a once through rehearsal with the Indigo Girls in advance. Amy Ray goofed a little during one song, she stopped and they all started over again. It was all fine and they had a laugh. The song of resistance, “Go” took on the feeling of a Bond theme with the help of the Francisco Noya and the RI Philharmonic.
