TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.

  • Reading for Fictional Worlds in Literature and Film
Reading for Fictional Worlds in Literature and Film Danielle Simard Doctor of Philosophy University of York English and Related Literature March, 2020 2 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to establish a critical methodology which reads for fictional worlds in literature and film. Close readings of literary and cinematic texts are presented in support of the proposition that the fictional world is, and arguably should be, central to the critical process. These readings demonstrate how fictional world-centric readings challenge the conclusions generated by approaches which prioritise the author, the reader and the viewer. I establish a definition of independent fictional worlds, and show how characters rather than narrative are the means by which readers access the fictional world in order to analyse it. This interdisciplinary project engages predominantly with theoretical and critical work on literature and film to consider four distinct groups of contemporary novels and films. These texts demand readings that pose potential problems for my approach, and therefore test the scope and viability of my thesis. I evaluate character and narrative through Fight Club (novel, Chuck Palahniuk [1996] film, David Fincher [1999]); genre, context, and intertextuality in Solaris (novel, Stanisław Lem [1961] film, Andrei Tarkovsky [1974] film, Steven Soderbergh [2002]); mythic thinking and character’s authority with American Gods (novel, Neil Gaiman [2001]) and Anansi Boys (novel, Neil Gaiman [2005]); and temporality and nationality in Cronos (film, Guillermo

  • Noreascon Four Is Delighted to Announce the Winners in 13 Categories for The
Embargoed until 12:01 a.m., 5 September 2004 BOSTON - Noreascon Four is delighted to announce the winners in 13 categories for the prestigious 2004 Hugo Awards for the best science fiction or fantasy stories of2003, and for related areas in fandom, art and dramatic presentation. The Hugo Awards were named for Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneer magazine Amazing Stories. The award categories have changed over time, as the field of science fiction has grown and evolved. This year's honors mark the 50t11 time the Hugo Awards have been granted for exemplary work. Both the John W. Campbell Award for New Writers and the Special Noreascon Four Committee Award winners were announced as part of the Hugo Ceremony. The Special Committee Award honors contributions to the field of science fiction and fantasy which are not included in the currently granted Hugo Awards, but which are deemed exemplary and worthy of special recognition. This award was given to Erwin "Filthy Pierre" Strauss for his many, largely unrecognized gifts of his time, energy, and boundless enthusiasm to fandom. This year's voting included a larger than average number of late-joining supporting members who wished to vote but not attend the World Science Fiction Convention. Because of the mixed process of balloting (mail-in and online both), a statistically larger than average percentage of unsigned ballots or ballots without correct PIN information were rejected. Complete statistics for the preferential (or "Australian") ballot format used for Hugo (and Campbell) tabulation follow: 2004 Hugo Detailed Results Best Novel --- 789 ballots counted first place: Paladin of Souls by Lois Mc Master Bujold 230 231 241 280 330 Ilium by Dan Simmons 158 160 191 212 305 Singularity Sky by Charles Stross 133 133 170 191 Humans by Robert J.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman Image: the cover of American Gods Released from prison, Shadow finds his world turned upside down. His wife has been killed; a mysterious stranger offers him a job. But Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about Shadow than is possible, warns that a storm is coming – a battle for the very soul of America . and they are in its direct path. American Gods is a kaleidoscopic journey into myth and across an American landscape at once eerily familiar and utterly alien. The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval—an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. Gaiman is an exemplary short story writer, but his ventures into novels are also compellingly imaginative.
