The JohnsTown Flood oF 1889 A history of the history… The Johnstown Flood of 1889 was an event that shocked a nation and one that was covered extensively by every existing form of media. It was certainly the biggest news story since Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and the murder of Abraham Lincoln, both of which happened a generation earlier in 1865. Indeed, by the end of 1889, millions of words had been written on the Great Flood, in newspapers and magazines, as well as in over a dozen books. What follows is an attempt to make sense of the written "literature" of the Johnstown Flood. It was quite an amazing time. Queen Victoria was sovereign of the United Kingdom, Benjamin Harrison was President of the United States, and the nation has recently commemorated the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration. Some items listed below are available digitally. You can cut and paste the address in your Internet browser. Some General Histories The definitive history of pre-Flood Johnstown, as well as the Flood itself, is Nathan D. Shappee's A History of Johnstown and the Great Flood of 1889: A Story of Destruction and Rehabilitation. Mr. Shappee wrote this as a requirement for his dissertation in 1940, and never had it published commercially. Not only is it well written, the documentation is immaculate. Although it can be somewhat hard to find outside of Pittsburgh or Johnstown, it is well worth the effort. One of the first attempts to write an objective, commercial narrative history of the Flood was by the late Richard O'Connor. -

The Wittenberg History Joumal Wittenberg University • Springfield, Ohio Volume XXIX Spring2000 On The Cover The Wittenberg University History Department has been housed in four other buildings, prior to moving to Hollenbeck Hall in the winter of 1999. Pictured on the front cover are the five buildings in which the History Department has made its home. Myers Hall (1845 86) - Myers was the original building of Wittenberg University. It housed classrooms and dormitories for students and faculty. Recitation Hall (1886-1963) - Recitation Hall was built through money donated by residents of the city of Springfield; the University had outgrown Myers as its only structure. Zimmerman Hall (1963-78) - Zimmerman became the stomping ground for history majors after the elimination of the home economics program, which was formerly housed here. Ermarth Center for the Humanities (1978-99) - Synod and Learner Halls, which make up the Ermarth Center for the Humanities, became the home of the history department after the departure of the Hamma Divinity School from Wittenberg. The school is now located in Columbus, Ohio, in consolidation with Capital University. Hollenbeck Hall (2000) - Wittenberg's first freestanding academic building in more than thirty years was dedicated January 28, 2000. The building houses the departments of history, philosophy, religion, political science, English, and foreign languages, as well as the East Asian and Russian Area studies programs. The Math and Writer's Workshops and the International Education office also make their home in Hollenbeck. An American Expert in the Pacific Age Victor Heiser was in charge of Rockefeller programs in Asia and the Pacific (which his contemporaries called the “Pacific region”) as Director for the East of the International Health Board (IHB) of the Rockefeller Foundation from 1915 to 1934.1 The IHB provided a substantial portion (30–40 percent) of the funding for international health projects of the League of Nations Health Organization (LNHO, 1921–46), and also conducted its own programs in various parts of the world.2 In recent years, scholars have begun to see the League as an important harbinger of global norms in the following era of the United Nations, and the role of the LNHO is in particularly well acknowledged.3 Heiser oversaw a large part of the LNHO’s international health work in Asia and the Pacific.4 Compared to other Rockefeller IHB officers who worked in Asia, such as John B. -

National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Johnstown Flood The Great Johnstown Flood Teacher’s Activity Guide A partnership was formed with the Johnstown Flood National Memorial and the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. Out of this partnership an interdisciplinary curriculum based program about the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889 was created. Chief of Interpretation Megan O’Malley, Education Specialist Gregory Zaborowski of the National Park Service and Francis Fregly Director of Education of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association along with staff from both organizations worked together to provide a complete educational experience telling the story of the Johnstown Flood. This program takes the student from the story’s beginnings – the South Fork Dam and Clubhouse of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club to the story’s end – disaster, relief and the rebuilding of the city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
