Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 141, 1-24. The Botanists Way is a promotional concept developed by the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mt Tomah for interpretation displays associated with the adjacent Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA). It is based on 19th century botanical exploration of areas between Kurrajong and Bell, northwest of Sydney, generally associated with Bells Line of Road, and focussed particularly on the botanists George Caley and Allan Cunningham and their connections with Mt Tomah. Based on a broader assessment of the area’s botanical history, the concept is here expanded to cover the route from Richmond to Lithgow (about 80 km) including both Bells Line of Road and Chifl ey Road, and extending north to the Newnes Plateau. The historical attraction of botanists and collectors to the area is explored chronologically from 1804 up to the present, and themes suitable for visitor education are recognised. Though the Botanists Way is focused on a relatively limited geographic area, the general sequence of scientifi c activities described - initial exploratory collecting; 19th century Gentlemen Naturalists (and lady illustrators); learned societies and publications; 20th century publicly-supported research institutions and the beginnings of ecology, and since the 1960s, professional conservation research and management - were also happening nationally elsewhere. -
The Koala Blooms Introduction Program
The UCSC/ Koala Blooms Introduction Program and Suncrest Nurseries One of our great local treasures in Santa Cruz County is--and has been for many years--the Arboretum at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I had the pleasure in the 1970s of watching its fledgling collection of Australian plants grow from an odd menagerie under foil-covered bottles to a beautiful public garden. Within a few years it became the most extensive collection of Australian native plants outside Australia itself. The process involved tireless work by the Director, Ray Collett and an enthusiastic, at that point mostly student staff, plus generous cooperation by Rodger Elliot, one of the great plant collectors and distributors of Australia. One of the side benefits of this arrangement was that many of the acquisitions were not merely random representatives of their species, but outstanding horticultural selections. Dr. Collett was notably generous with local nurseryfolk interested in giving these plants a try, and the Arboretum became--as it remains to this day--one of the great sources for new ornamental plant material in California. There was only one thing missing from this picture: Income for the garden to pursue its work in new plant research and introductions. Individual nurseries and the Monterey Bay Chapter of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers have offered significant support. But as the sheer size of the Arboretum and its projects grew, with only modest increases in funding by the University, the quest for funding became an urgent matter. One small piece of the solution was conceived jointly by Rodger Elliot and others at Koala Blooms in Australia and the staff at the Arboretum: A new introduction scheme under which some of the most promising acquisitions from Australia are offered to cooperating nurseries for propagation, and a substantial royalty is paid on each plant sold. -

SOME FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SUDDEN DEATH SYNDROME IN CUT FLOWER PLANTS A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Horti cultural Science at Massey University Clinton N Bowyer 1996 11 ABSTRACT Soil/root mixes from plants with the Sudden Collapse Syndrome of cut flower plants were tested for Phytophthora infection using a lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) baiting technique. Boronia heterophylla and Leucadendron 'Wilsons Wonder' root samples both caused the lupin seedlings to exhibit symptoms of Phytophthora infection. The efficacy of phosphorous acid (Foschek® 500 at 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm) and a combination of phosphorous acid and an additional product (Foschek® 500 and C408 at 1000/200 ppm and 2000/400 ppm) in controlling Phytophthora cinnamomi root infections of L 'W ilsons Wonder', B.heterophylla and B. megastigma rooted cuttings was compared with fosetyl AI (Aliette® 80 SP at 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm) under conditions of high disease pressure. The fungicides were applied as a root drench 7 days prior to the roots being inoculated by a split wheat technique and the effect of the fungicides and their concentrations on the rate of plant mortality was measured. The results were species dependent. -

It grows in heathy vegetation amongst granite boulders of the New England Batholith, where it is restricted to a limited number of mostly small populations. This recovery plan describes our current understanding of B. granitica, documents the research undertaken to date and identifies management actions required and parties responsible in addressing the conservation of B. granitica. Legislative context The Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act) is NSW’s most comprehensive legislative framework to protect and encourage the recovery of threatened species, populations and communities. -

Pink Wax Flower
Eriostemon australasius Pink Wax Flower Nothing heralds the arrival of Spring in Sydney bushland better than the glorious pink flowers of Eriostemon, the Pink Wax flower and its close relations, the Boronias. This lovely shrub is not only common on sandstone ridges around Sydney but grows in heath, woodland and forests along the coast from Lake Conjola south of Wollongong to Fraser Island in south-eastern Queensland. Until relatively recently, there were many species recognised as Eriostemon. However, most of these have now been transferred to the genus Philotheca, initially leaving only two species, E. australsius and a second species, E. banksii which grows on the northern tip of Cape York in far north Queensland. But now it appears that E. banksii has been reclassified as merely a sub-species, in other words, E. australasius subsp. banksii. E. australasius was the first Eriostemon to be described by botanists, so this species is known as the type species. Eriostemon belongs in the plant family Rutaceae, characteristically trees and Eriostemon australasius shrubs with conspicuous oil subsp. banksii glands in the leaves. Crush a leaf and take a sniff – this Eriostemon australasius fragrance is loved by some, subsp. australasius loathed by others! For Sydneysiders, it always brings back childhood memories of the Sydney bush. The family has Gondwanan origins, although now widespread throughout tropical and temperate regions of the world. Probably the best known Rutaceae are the citrus fruit (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, mandarins). Don't confuse Eriostemon with Boronia: the former has five petals, the latter only four. There is another trap for the unwary too. -

Offord Botanic Gardens Trust, Mount Annan Botanic Garden, Mount Annan Drive, Mount Annan, NSW 2567, AUSTRALIA 1 Scientific Services Division, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW, PO Box 1967, Hurstville NSW 2220, AUSTRALIA Abstract: The New South Wales Seedbank (at Mount Annan Botanic Garden) stores seeds of both common and threatened species for conservation, research and restoration or revegetation projects. The value of the collections depends on our ability to germinate seeds once they have been retrieved from storage. The collection includes 129 collections representing 93 taxa in the family Rutaceae, but seed viability in Rutaceae is variable, germination cues are poorly-understood and problems are likely to arise in trying to grow plants from seed. In this study we quantified seed fill and/or viability and germination for 112 species in the Rutaceae family. For many of the species, this is the first time that these seed characteristics have been recorded. We found that seed fill (0–100%) and seed viability (0–97%), were highly variable, with 80% of collections having low viability (<75%). There was also a trend for threatened species to have lower seed fill than common species, while viability and germination were similar. This review reaffirms the need for further study of seed characteristics in Rutaceae. Cunninghamia (2009) 11(2): 203–212 Introduction variability to be retained.
