She is the culmination of her experiences, she is her parents and siblings, her former lovers, her husband and children. A woman can be known, but not truly understood, until one gets to know the parts that make her. Like this collection of short stories, a woman is the product of years of work, love, labor, and many others who contribute to who she is and who she wants to be. She is strong and determined in the face of the dangers that stand before her. These stories tell the story of one woman through her childhood, her experiences, her lovers, her husband, and her child. All the characters in this collection are inspired by someone specific, except for our main character. She is the woman I imagine we all are at some point in our lives: at times a fool, at times wise, confused, in love, happy sad, seeking happiness and peace with her present and her past.

“I am the one who knocks!”: What It Means to Be a Man in Breaking Bad. Tibbetts ________________________________ Dr. Ron Wilson ________________________________ Dr. Germaine Halegoua Date Defended: August 18, 2014 ii The Dissertation Committee for Stephanie Wille certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: “I am the one who knocks!”: What It Means to Be a Man in Breaking Bad. ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John C. Tibbetts Date approved: October 30, 2014 iii Abstract Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-2013) dramatizes the rise and fall of Walter White, a mild- mannered high school chemistry teacher who, through a series of misfortunes and freak opportunities, is transformed into a notorious, brutal drug kingpin -- a trajectory described as "Mr. Chips" to "Scarface." I contextualize and conduct a textual analysis of this acclaimed television series as a case study that demonstrates the increasingly complex construction of masculine identity in contemporary television. This study examines the reception of specific characters among critics and audiences, as well as investigates the ways in which the setting and depiction of ethnicities influence representations of masculinity. Calling for attention to the apparent lack in masculinity studies on television, the complex male representation in Breaking Bad suggests that men are not merely experiencing a crisis of their masculinity in contemporary society, but demonstrates that there is a problem with uniform white, hetero-normative representation of masculinity on TV.

  • Analysis of Recent MASS SHOOTINGS ANALYSIS of RECENT MASS SHOOTINGS
August 2015 Analysis of Recent MASS SHOOTINGS ANALYSIS OF RECENT MASS SHOOTINGS Everytown For Gun Safety conducted a comprehensive analysis of every mass shooting between January 2009 and July 2015 that was identifiable through FBI data and media reports. This report describes the 133 MASS SHOOTINGS – ALMOST TWO PER MONTH THAT OCCURRED IN 39 STATES in the nearly seven-year period. Each description includes the location of the shooting, number of people killed and/or injured, and information on the shooter, gun(s), ammunition, and gun purchase, where available. The FBI defines “mass shooting” as any incident where at least four people were murdered with a gun. Everytown For Gun Safety reviewed mass shootings in the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Reports from 2009-2012 and searched the media for further details about these incidents as well as for mass shootings that occurred in 2013– 2015. This survey includes every shooting we identified in which at least four people were murdered with a gun. And the findings reveal a different portrait of mass shootings in America than conventional wisdom might suggest. 2 Analysis of Recent MASS SHOOTINGS Mass shootings Mass shootings represent a small share of total U.S. firearm homicides. The Privatization of Everything in Breaking Bad David R. Lee A Thesis in the Field of History for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University November 2016 © 2016 David R. Lee Abstract Television is the quintessential medium of popular culture. As such, its content can provide an important window into the cultural dynamics in a given period for a given society. Vince Gilligan’s award-winning Breaking Bad is one of those shows that powerfully engaged with its moment. Gilligan created a compelling protagonist in the deeply flawed yet charismatic genius Walter White. He had Walter build an illegal drug business at which he had savant-like skills, and situated Walt in a family characterized by dysfunction. In showing how and why Walter traded a quiet but economically marginal existence as a high school chemistry teacher for a violent but wealthy life as a drug lord, Breaking Bad offered a compelling critique of one of the most insidious economic policy initiatives of late-20th/early-21st century America: neoliberalism.

The Wages of Sin is Death: Breaking Bad as the New American Tragedy Course Syllabus -- Spoiler-Free! Messiah College. Fall 2015. Tuesdays, 6:15-9:15 p.m. Boyer 131. Instructor: James B. LaGrand Email: [email protected] Office: Boyer 264 Office hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, 11-noon; Telephone: ext. 7381 Thursdays, 3-4 p.m.; & by appointment Course description A number of serialized TV dramas over the past decade or so have led many critics to call this period “the golden age of television.” No show better epitomizes this label than Breaking Bad. Its thrilling plots and cliff-hangers have won it millions of viewers. But it’s more than a pop culture phenomenon. Creator Vince Gilligan’s show stands out for its novelistic structure and sensitive examination of characters’ inner lives. Even more remarkable for a television program, Breaking Bad provides a relentlessly honest picture of the human condition--both its vices and virtues. The show’s depictions of the seven “deadly sins” or “capital vices”-- especially pride, envy, greed, and wrath--have led many viewers to recall Greek and Shakespearean tragedies. Acclaimed not only by the public but also by television and literature critics, Breaking Bad is uniquely well-suited among television shows for study and reflection in a classroom context. In this course, you will take in course content (i.e. episodes of Breaking Bad) outside of the classroom--what’s sometimes called a “flipped classroom.” Thus, class sessions can be reserved for discussion and assimilation of this show’s many timely and important themes--including human depravity and morality, drugs, drug policy, marriage, family, friendship, masculinity, gender relations, work, vocation, money, and race.

Reynolds* INTRODUCTION Walter White could teach us many things: how to read the periodic table; how to destroy a tub with hydrofluoric acid; how to build a battery; how to make poison out of castor beans; how to build a bomb under a wheelchair; how to use the remote control of the car to operate a ma- chine gun; and how to coordinate multiple assassinations of prison infor- mants within thirty seconds of one another. But these are niche skills at best. Is there anything useful we can learn from Walter White? As it turns out, Walter White can also teach us how to negotiate— or, to be more precise, watching Walter White negotiate in Breaking Bad helps us think more clearly about what we are doing when we negotiate. For the student of negotiation, Breaking Bad is an absolute treasure trove, producing an incredibly complex and varied array of bargaining parties and negotiated transactions, episode after episode.

  • Angry White Men: How Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead Predicted the Trumpian Zeitgeist
ANGRY WHITE MEN: HOW BREAKING BAD AND THE WALKING DEAD PREDICTED THE TRUMPIAN ZEITGEIST Graeme J. Wilson A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2019 Committee: Ellen Gorsevski, Advisor Raymond Swisher Graduate Faculty Representative Lisa Hanasono Thomas Mascaro © 2019 Graeme J. Wilson All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Gorsevski, Advisor The archetypal protagonist of the modern “Golden Age of Television” is a maladjusted, White male struggling with feelings of marginalization. While this description applies to characters such as Breaking Bad’s Walter White, it is also used by political commentators to characterize what is popularly perceived to be the prototypical male supporter of President Donald Trump. When considering the cultural zeitgeist of the angry White man, are there any cultural and rhetorical connections between White, male Trump supporters who exhibit irrational feelings of marginalization and dramas such as Breaking Bad whose protagonists similarly exhibit and are motivated by such feelings? As a theorist and critical scholar of televised rhetoric and discourses, I am interested in analyzing such programming to determine whether these prestige antihero series invited viewers to contribute to the current masculinist movement under Trump and reassert dominance in response to perceived losses to women and minority groups. The specific episodes that will serve as case studies for this research into the relationship between modern prestige television and the cultural zeitgeist of Trump’s America will be drawn from Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, due to their cultural influence and visibility.
