Remodelación Del Palacio De Bellas Artes
Remodelación del Palacio de Bellas Artes Antonio Toca Fernández Después de 75 años se realizó una amplia remodelación del Pala cio de Bellas Artes que, por el alcance y la importancia de esas obras, fue cerrado temporalmente. Antes se habían hecho reparaciones a las cúpulas exteriores y se construyó el estacionamiento subterráneo, la plaza principal y las dos fuentes laterales. Sin embargo, fuera de tareas de mantenimiento, no se habían realizado obras importantes dentro del edificio. Los juicios contra la remodelación del Palacio se han dado a conocer públicamente desde que fue reabierto en noviembre de 2010. Sorpren- de que se concentren en aspectos muy específicos; la mayoría en la Sala de Teatro —como lo denominaba su primer creador, el arquitecto Adamo Boari— y que no se mencionen las mejoras que se realizaron en otras áreas del Palacio. De manera que criticar sólo una parte del edificio es juzgarlo parcialmente. Debido, quizá, a que se desconoce que la transformación más radical fue —desde 1932— en el proyecto original del Teatro Nacional, cuando el edificio se dividió y fue transformado en uno de los primeros centros multifuncionales en el mundo. Por eso las críticas o elogios debe rían considerar la diversidad de usos e instalaciones de todos los espacios del edificio, y no sólo referirse a la sala de espectáculos. En un informe, publicado en 1934, el escritor José Gorostiza reveló: “en vez de concluir el Teatro Nacional, se ha construido en realidad un 52 Ilustraciones tomadas de Informe preliminar para la construcción del Teatro Nacional [facsímil], Adamo Boari, México, inba, 2004 edificio nuevo [el Palacio de Bellas Artes] como sede de una institución au tónoma de servicio social tendiente a rehabilitar y vivificar el arte mexicano en todas sus manifestaciones y de promover su rápido desenvol vimiento”. -

Cultural Management in the National Palace of Mexico: Use and Heritage Conservation
Ge-conservación Conservação | Conservation Cultural management in the National Palace of Mexico: use and heritage conservation Lilia Teresa Rivero Weber Abstract: Conservation of Mexico National Palace is a complex labor, since implies the preservation, not only of the material aspects of the building and the objects contained within, but also all the immaterial values reflected on the walls of the structure that mirrors the historic continuity of Mexico and therefore part of the national identity. Due these conditions, National Palace is in our days the most emblematic and symbolical government building of the country. In order to preserve the monument, a comprehensive conservation-cultural management program has been developed and implemented, considering operational aspects of the monument management, that is also part of the cultural infrastructure of Mexico City, since this historical complex attracts around 340 000 visitors each year. In addition, among the Conservator´s Office strategy has been to promote collaboration between different actors involved with the use, operation and conservation of the monument, in which are included external governmental offices and academic institutions, both national and international. This collaborative approach has been crucial in order to implement the Management Program for the conservation of the monument. Ma. del Carmen Bernárdez de la Granja Mail: [email protected] RESUMEN Existe en la Ciudad de México, como en otros lugares, una tendencia que ha protagonizado las revitalizaciones de espacios públicos realizadas en los últimos años, se trata de la peatonalización de calles o avenidas. Dicho tipo de intervención es, definitivamente impactante en cuanto que modifica determinantemente el uso y percepción del espacio. La constante insistencia por la necesidad de revitalizar el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México ha provocado, además de una evidente transformación de imagen urbana, otras mutaciones en el espacio urbano, cambios muy evidentes de carácter social, espacial y económico principalmente. Lo que aquí se presenta, es un análisis de éste tipo de intervención, realizada en la calle Francisco I. Madero, arteria vital del centro histórico, que cerró el tránsito vehicular en 2010 para priorizar el acceso exclusivamente peatonal al centro de la ciudad; los impactos generados a partir de éste suceso, principalmente en el ámbito comercial. Palabras clave: Centro Histórico, Revitalización, Peatonalización ABSTRACT In Mexico City exists a trend, as in other places, that has played a main role in the revitalization of public spaces in recent years: the pedestrianisation of streets or avenues. Such an intervention has an important impact since it crucially modifies the use and perception of space. Constant insistence for the need to revitalize Mexico City's Historic Center has caused, in addition to a clear transformation of urban image, other important mutations in the urban space, mainly of social, spatial and economic nature. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Bedfordshire Repository Between the Stone and the Mirror: Tlatelolco 1968 Massacre and Poetic Debates on the History of Violence Victoria Carpenter, York St John University, UK On 2 October 1968, ten days before the Olympic Games began in Mexico, a student demonstration in the Plaza of Three Cultures in the Tlatelolco district of the capital was attacked by the army, paramilitary squads and police. Many were killed, including residents of the apartment blocks in the square. The massacre soon became the subject of many debates, studies, and literary works, whose aim is to keep the event alive in the collective memory and to tell “the truth” about what happened that night. The first poetic responses to the massacre told the story of the Spanish Conquest of the Aztec empire as a metaphor or the Tlatelolco massacre. We shall explore these texts to determine whether the parallels drawn between the Tlatelolco 1968 massacre and the pivotal events in Mexican history reveal the habitual or affective nature of “2 de octubre.” The analysis is based on the theory of posthegemony with a particular focus on the notions of affect and habit, exploring these in the context of Maurice Halbwachs’s theory of collective memory. The essay focuses on the hitherto unexplored theoretical perspective of the posthegemonic nature of a violent event’s symbolic value. 2 1968 was a year of worldwide turmoil and Mexico was no exception. In preparation for the Olympic Games (opening on 12 October in the capital), Mexico found itself amidst student protests and strikes by teachers, university professors, doctors and railroad workers. -

La Plaza Garibaldi está ubicada en el centro del que fuera el barrio prehispánico de Texcatzoncátl, que era habitado principalmente por alfareros y cultivadores de maguey. Durante 1850 nació la Plaza Garibaldi, que entonces era conocida con el nombre de Plazuela de Jardín, lugar acostumbrado para la vendimia, por lo que más tarde se le adjudicó el nombre de Plaza del Baratillo. Fue hasta 1921 que se le dio el nombre de Plaza Garibaldi, tras celebrarse el centenario de la consumación de la Independencia nacional. Le fue dado ese nombre para honrar a Guissepe Garibaldi, quién se enroló en las filas maderistas en 1911. Es tradicionalmente conocida porque en ella, sobre todo en la noche, acude la gente a escuchar música de maricachi y degustar comida y bebidas, como el tequila y el mezcal, en los restaurantes a su alrededor. The reconstruction of Colonial monuments in the 1920s and 1930s in Mexico ELSA ARROYO AND SANDRA ZETINA Translation by Valerie Magar Abstract This article presents an overview of the criteria and policies for the reconstruction of historical monuments from the viceregal period in Mexico, through the review of paradigmatic cases which contributed to the establishment of practices and guidelines developed since the 1920s, and that were extended at least until the middle of the last century. It addresses the conformation of the legal framework that gave rise to the guidelines for the protection and safeguard of built heritage, as well as the context of reassessment of the historical legacy through systematic studies of representative examples of Baroque art and its ornamental components, considered in a first moment as emblematic of Mexico’s cultural identity. Based on case studies, issues related to the level of reconstruction of buildings are discussed, as well as the ideas at that time on the historical value of monuments and their function; and finally, it presents the results of the interventions in terms of their ability to maintain monuments as effective devices for the evocation of the past through the preservation of its material remains. Mexico Old and New: Art from Precolumbian Times to the Present Mexico City & Teotihuacan Drs. Annabeth Headrick and Meg Jackson, Art History ARTH 3910 Sunday, March 24, 2019 – Saturday, March 30, 2019 Introduction. Mexico Old and New: Art from Precolumbian Times to the Present is an opportunity to spend a week exploring archeology, history, and art history in Central America. With the instruction of professors of Precolumbian and of contemporary art, our studies span from one of the most powerful regions in ancient Mesoamerica to a megalopolis that boasts a leading scene in today’s global art world. Our trip begins in Teotihuacan, where participants will visit one of the largest preindustrial cities during its time (150 BCE-600 CE). We will begin our exploration of the city along its grand avenue, visiting the Temple of the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, where we will discuss the symbolism of the sacrificial burials and manmade cave found under the sculpted façade of the temple. Students will also climb the massive pyramids of the Sun and Moon to experience the visual evidence that Teotihuacanos constructed their city to embody creation mythology. A visit to the on-site museum affords exploration of the ceramic and sculptural art of Teotihuacan. Finally, we will investigate several of the city’s apartment compounds where the Teotihuacanos lived, using the lavish murals in these domestic spaces as evidence for the city’s socio- political structure and civic ritual behavior. On Tuesday morning (03/26) we travel from Teotihuacan to Mexico City, where our accommodations are in the capital city’s famous central plaza, the Zócalo.
