Wednesday 5th October 2016

Callington will be buzzing again this October with its annual Honey Fair. The Fair was originally granted a market charter status by Henry III in 1267; it is now in its 38th year since it was reintroduced in the 70s.

With over 100+ stalls Honey Fair is one of the best supported events in the area. ‘Bee-sides’ the ever popular Bee Keepers displays, with their live bees and honey products, there will be live music, street entertainment, the ever popular owl display, ‘Teas with the Bees’ and Children’s Art Competition (with over 800 entries), charity stalls and much, much more. Don’t forget you can follow the trail of the Honey Fair Shop window displays, where the theme this year is ‘A Decade in our Queen’s Reign’.

Once again we host the Town Crier Competition – so come along and cheer. The ever-popular Rowland’s Fun Fair will be also here again.

If you are charity or stall holder it is still not too late to book your place, please see: http://www.callingtonlions.org.uk/honeyfair.html

LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB

Our Luncheon Club did not meet during August and September but start up again on Wednesday 5th October at the China Fleet Club in . It is here that we will be celebrating our third anniversary. Members of the Luncheon Club will be baking a very special celebration cake and, as our emblem is a full bloom rose, all members will be presented with a real rose at their table. We will also be celebrating one of our members 80th birthday, a very special double celebration.

At our last luncheon of the season, which was held at the Sleepy Hollow, we surprised Val Sue Smith, our transport guru, with a beautiful photo album with pictures of all members of the Club who attended our Christmas lunch and, as it was Val's birthday on the same day, a beautiful cake in the shape of a maypole was presented to her. This was to remind Val of the mistakes she made while dancing the Maypole, of course Val was innocent, she blamed Santa Clause.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the ladies for their wonderful gift, I’m looking forward to meeting up again in October. See you soon. www.http://callingtoncave.weebly.com FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS

From the director of

THE QUEEN & PHILOMENA

Thursday 22nd September Florence Foster Jenkins was a wealthy grande dame and patron of the 7.30pm arts who notoriously deluded herself she was a talented coloratura soprano, warbling off-key at excruciating private concerts and soirées. Callington Town Hall Meryl Streep plays her with great gusto, the empress proud of her new clothes. Hugh Grant plays her indulgent partner and chief courtier, a failed Shakespearian thesp called St Clair Bayfield – and his performance “Meryl Streep is superb and her is genuinely touching. character is simply larger than life.”

Stephen Frears’s movie lays out the awful situation: because they wanted “Streep is, as ever, flawless - to sing as her cash and her contacts, some of the grandest musicians swallowed bizarrely as this you have to know how to sing well in the first place -- and her their pride and paid court to Jenkins, flattered her (in private) and chemistry with Grant is moreish in the pretended not to notice how terrible she was. Reassured by her evident extreme.” association with these genuine titans, her undiscerning fans cooed and fed her the delicious drug of celebrity prestige at countless little events – “Funny, charming and moving true story while other people suppressed their astonished giggles. Jenkins might - brilliantly acted and lovingly shot.” have remained a private embarrassment, until her catastrophic decision to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall, to which the meanies of the “Florence couldn’t hit the right note national press would be admitted: like the opening night of Springtime for with a blunderbuss, but Streep’s Hitler. And this is where the story begins. performance is pitch perfect.”

This photo is of a group of gentlemen outside The Railway Inn (now Swingletree), Kelly Bray in the 1950s. It is not known what the occasion commemorates, however two individuals are known. The tallest at the back, Monty Mewton and sitting in front to his left is Mr Lazenbury (Station Master of Kelly Bray). Unfortunately, the names of the two school children sat in front is not known but the one on the left is very “familiar”. No doubt someone out there will put us right. The photo also shows the front exterior of the Pub as it used to be with its portico and rather grand columns, space now taken up by the conservatory.

Green Light for Samba Group

No-one can have missed the vibrancy of the atmosphere in Rio over the last few weeks, especially in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. Don’t be shy! Now is your chance to be a part of bringing some musical fun and excitement to brighten up the streets of South East Cornwall! After last month’s article where we were looking for someone to lead a new Samba Drumming group we have come up trumps and found a willing volunteer who not only has the energy and enthusiasm - but the experience as well.

No stopping you! No matter how old you are and no matter what experience you have there is nothing to stand in your way! Come along on your own or bring some friends or family. All will be made very welcome.

First rehearsal The first meeting will be held on Thursday 1st September at 7.00pm in Callington Town Hall. If you want to come along and give it a try, want to sit and watch what happens or want to chat to someone about it, then do come and join us. Future dates For the time being we have settled on Thursday evenings as a time for rehearsals and they will be held fortnightly in the Town Hall. Future dates will be Thursday 15th and 29th September and 13th and 27th October. Once we have an established group we can then decide on the dates, times and frequency of future rehearsals.

The way ahead? Sean Hooper, who initially ran the group for MayFest, was really impressed with the Callington ensemble and would love the group to be involved in the City of Lights parade. There are obviously plenty of occasions throughout the year when a Samba Band would be the ideal group to create some fun and noise in our area: MayFest, Carnival, Honey Fair, the Callington Christmas lights switch-on and a host of local fetes and shows. As the band gets established there will be plenty of scope for other people, for example with experience of costume design, to get involved. Dance fits in well alongside Samba, so anyone interested in being part of a samba dance troupe or a new majorette group would also be warmly received.

We look forward to seeing you! Callington Heritage Centre

Photos such as the one opposite (page 7) are so important in recording events and freezing in time a special moment, our archives at the Heritage Centre are fortunately full of them. It is sometimes an aspect of our experience overlooked by our visitors to the Centre. However, no matter what your interest, looking for family members or events down the years, I would advise to allocate at least an hour to even begin tackling our stock! Our history brings thousands of tourists to the UK, it is long and chequered, visitor experiences such as ours are a rich source of material, showing everyday life in the raw as was “enjoyed” by our forebearers. It is who we are and how we got to be who we are. Some would say that we are too fixated with the past, but ignore it with its lessons and we are in trouble. Which brings me nicely to Anniversaries. Some are joyous occasions, some are sad and introspective. The Queen’s 90th Birthday, the Centenary of The Battle of the Somme, 50th Anniversary ofour World Cup Win (I still can’t believe it’s been 50 years). But for those of us brought up in SE Cornwall “Anniversaries” were usually associated with our Methodist Chapels and celebrating the Harvest “We plough the fields and scatter” – everyone was encouraged to bring their own little donation or piece of agriculture, the ubiquitous wicker basket of fruit, these were built into a display at the front of the pews, the farmers bringing a hay bale or two. You could have been in no doubt of the relationship between the seasons, yourselves, production and the land. Sadly, these events have diminished in number, along with some of the Chapels now confined to dust and we are all the more poorer for it. The Heritage Centre remains in Liskeard Road and welcomes your visits on Fridays 10.00am – 4.00pm and same hours on the first Saturday of the month. Enquiries to Kay Greenstock on 01579 383209 or Chris Cansfield on 01752 851403. Heritage Centre telephone number 01579 389506.

Page 7 SANTA RUN Back for 2016

Callington Rotary Club are delighted that they will be working alongside CHICKS again this December when the annual Santa Fun Run makes a welcome return.

CHICKS provides free, week-long respite breaks for disadvantaged children aged between 8 - 15 living in the UK, a good number of whom come from Cornwall, some very close to home. CHICKS believes every child has the right to make positive childhood memories!

A CHICKS break inspires new confidence and gives children the chance to have fun, enjoy new experiences and relax. More than anything, it gives them the chance to just be children.

The children CHICKS helps come from a variety of backgrounds. They might be living in poverty, be young carers, be victims of bullying or abuse, or have been bereaved. The one thing they all have in common is that they could really benefit from a week away from their circumstances. Children are referred by professionals (for example, teachers or social workers) so CHICKS can help those who need support the most.

Let’s show how generous the people of Callington are by either taking part in the Fun Run or by supporting it by donations or sponsorship. The first two years we had nearly 200 people of all ages running the course. Let’s try and top that this year and really make a difference to young people’s lives!

Make sure that you and all your family and friends put Saturday 3rd December in your diaries and look out for details of the enrolment process in future editions of the Callington News.

And start searching for sponsors!

My work experience with Callington Town Council by Cameron Smith

For a week in July I had the opportunity to work with Callington Town Council as part of my work experience for school. The Town Council carry out many different services and I helped out in many different ways, like monument testing in the Cemetery, databasing the wayside seats, taking pictures of headstones in the Cemetery, taking photos of the allotments and uploading them to the database, helping with the park inspections and weeding flower beds. In that time I have had a blast while also gaining more of an understanding of what the Council does each day and who handles what.

Each day I came in those doors I was greeted by smiles. Although there were some parts that I didn’t enjoy, like the stock take of the cutlery cupboard, just because of the annoyance of trying to keep track of the amounts of cutlery. These are just petty annoyances that all work places have, overall it was still quite fun and just interesting to see all the effort the council put in to keeping the Town Council premises clean and maintained. I hope that I can come back and help out more later on in life because, and hate to be a broken record constantly repeating myself, this was just a fun time with fun people who also seem to have the same amount of enthusiasm about their work and keeping this community a nice place to live.

Page 8 New Life for MURALS

Fate has not treated all of the Callington murals equally. Some have unfortunately disappeared due to new building developments. Others have suffered because of the structure on which they were painted. Time and the elements have not been too kind to several and a lack of a decent coat of varnish has meant that others have become faded.

Love them or not, there is no doubt that they have made a considerable impact on the town. They do, of course, need constant maintenance to keep them in pristine condition and the difficulty in finding sponsors to this end is not as easy in today’s economic climate as it once was.

The Town Council has made an initial survey of the present murals and has come to the conclusion that they do have considerable benefits for the town.

 They have brought gallery-worthy art to our streets where they can be enjoyed by all;  Murals are important in that they bring art into the public sphere;  For artists, their work gets a wide audience who otherwise might not set foot in an art gallery;  A town benefits by the beauty of a work of art;  Murals can have a dramatic impact whether consciously or subconsciously on the attitudes of passers by, when they are added to areas where people live and work;  It can also be argued that the presence of large, public murals can add aesthetic improvement to the daily lives of residents;  Many rural towns have begun using murals to create tourist attractions in order to boost economic income (even today they are encouraging visitors to Callington to view them and take photographs).

Callington is unique in its shape and design. A signposted tour of the town, together with information points, would draw residents and visitors alike to our town, inform them of the town’s heritage, help them appreciate its riches and encourage them to use the facilities.

Next Step?

The Council has agreed to a sub-committee being formed which will investigate the necessary pathway to revitalising the present murals and consider the possibilities to either extend the range of murals or develop complementary art forms. The project will:  be one which engages with the community across the ages  be one of education and skills enhancement  increase understanding of local heritage

It is envisaged that a preliminary feasibility study will be carried out and that then a suitable project manager and experienced street artist/muralist will be employed to undertake the project.

Like to be a part of the project?

The first meeting will be held in the Committee Room of Callington Town Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 8th September. If you would like to get involved, please come along and join in with this exciting project for Callington or ring 01579 382705 for more details.
