Keeneland September Preview cont. A Tough Act To Follow... The 2003 Keeneland September Sale was conducted under a specter of uncertainty as to how Mare Repro- ductive Loss Syndrome would impact the market. As a byproduct of MRLS, officials at Keeneland made the difficult decision to forego their boutique July sale and group those horses in September Book 1. No one could have predicted what was to come. For the select por- tion of the 2003 event, gross receipts jumped 31 per- cent, the average of $387,168 represented a whopping 45-percent improvement on 2002 and the median rose by a generous 35 percent. It was, in a sense, compar- ing apples to oranges, but the results were no less impressive. Optimism rules the day again 12 months later, though tempered by pragmatism. “Our gains last year were phenomenal--to say we’re going to do that [again] would be ridiculous,” admitted Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s director of sales. “By the looks of it, the top end of the market is about the same as it was last year. We are very pleased with the horses we’ve re- cruited for the select portion of the sale and our con- signors have brought us a very strong group of individu- als both physically and pedigree-wise. We hope for the best. Obviously any increases we could get we’d be very pleased to have.”

Cautious Optimism... The upper end of the market will get its test today and tomorrow and there are some questions to be answered. While the summer’s first yearling venue, Fasig-Tipton July, held up very well, there seemed to be some hesitation on the part of buyers during that com- pany’s boutique Saratoga Select sale a month ago. While the market performed reasonably well, just five horses reached the seven-figure plateau, the cumulative average was off marginally and the median sunk by over 11 percent. Russell was unwilling to label these developments a trend and hopes the September sale can ‘right the ship.’ “The select portion of the sale is as strong as last year and I think the middle part of the sale is exceedingly strong as well,” he said. “And I hope there will be a carryover effect like last year, where we had a rollover effect from one book to an- other pretty much all the way through the whole sale.” During the 2003 sale, each session saw an increase in the average from the previous year, with the exception of the 12th and final day of bidding. Russell is also encouraged by the applications for credit which have been streaming in since August. “One of the ladies just came up from the credit office and said they were swamped down there,” he commented. “I notice this year that we got a lot of credit apps in early from some new people. I’ve been getting them on a regular basis. They are full ranges, too. There are low five-figure email: [email protected] [applications] to high six-figure. It’s a good range.” Keeneland September Preview cont. p9 www.tattersalls.com TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 9/13/04 • PAGE 8 of 12
