The Forest Garden Approach, developed by Trees for the Future, diversifies farming systems with trees and food crops that meet subsistence needs and market opportunities. While conventional agriculture programs focus on one or few crops, the Forest Garden Approach is rooted in diversifying each farm with many food crops and thousands of trees so farming families will be self-sufficient in their production of food, timber and non-timber forest products. What is the Facilitator’s Guide? The Facilitator’s Guide is designed for use in conjunction with the Technical Manual and Farmer’s Workbook to provide both facilitators and farmers with the resources and guidance needed to pursue the Forest Garden Approach within a four-year curriculum. Who should use the Facilitator’s Guide? Trainers, extension workers, specialists, and individuals interested in working with farmers to implement agroforestry techniques that increase both their income and food security in a restorative way. Why should this Facilitator’s Guide be used? By guiding massive numbers of subsistence farmers through the phases of protecting, diversifying and optimizing their farms, we can have a permanent impact on the lives of millions of smallholder farming families across the developing tropics struggling to survive on their degraded farms. How should this Facilitator’s Guide be used? The training modules in this Facilitator’s Guide were designed to guide farmers through the three phases of the Forest Garden Approach. In the first year, the focus is largely on growing and planting trees that protect the land. Farmers learn to design Green Walls and plant thousands of agroforestry trees around and across their field to serve many purposes. By the second year, farmers undergo training in vegetable and fruit tree production to diversify the sources of income and nutrition. By the third and fourth years, farmers learn to optimize their field by using techniques that maximize productivity on the land in a sustainable way. ii Each module in this Facilitator’s Guide has a corresponding Farmer’s Workbook section for farmers to keep records, take home activities and illustrations that will help them recall what they learned and need to do when returning home after workshops. This Facilitator’s Guide is also accompanied by the Forest Garden Technical Manual. Each module in this guide refers to the relevant chapters within the manual and provides all the technical answers behind many of the questions asked in the facilitation exercises. Please note that you will encounter annual planning and monitoring activities that Trees for the Future (TREES) uses but which may not be applicable to all communities or projects.     Chapter 6 Care and Handling The following TEKS will be addressed in this chapter: (6) The student knows the management factors of floral enterprises. The student is expected to: (A) use temperature, preservatives, and cutting techniques to increase keeping quality; (B) identify tools, chemicals, and equipment used in floral design; (C) fertilize, prune, and water tropical plants; (D) manage pests; and (E) demonstrate the technical skills for increasing the preservation of cut flowers and foliage. Care and Handling of Cut Flowers and Foliages Cut flowers, even though they have been separated from the parent plant, are living, actively metabolizing plant parts. These parts undergo the same basic aging process as the entire plant — only quicker. However, the rate of deterioration can be slowed down considerably by supplying the cut flower with its basic needs. The first and foremost need of a cut flower is water. Second is food. In addition, certain damaging factors such as exposure to ethylene gas, microbial attack and rough handling must be avoided. From a practical point of view, a controlled rate of opening is needed as well as maintenance of good color. All of these factors must be considered by everyone who handles the product. This includes growers wholesalers and retailers. In order to be competitive in the marketplace our product must be desirable to the consumer. Our flowers must be fresh for the customer to enjoy! Sassafras is a tree common to the eastern coast of the United States, especially in the mountainous regions. Historically and continuing until today, roots of the tree are used to prepare fragrant teas and syrups.

    Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Forestry Note TX-FS-12-6 Pre-commercial thinning releases over-crowded pine or hardwood stands to prevent stagnation, decrease the risk of insects and disease, and increase the growth of remaining trees. Trees are typically removed by mowing, disking, chopping, cutting, spraying or prescribed burning. More details found in the text…. Pre-commercial thinning – Benefits/Costs? What is pre-commercial thinning? Pre-commercial thinning is a thinning method performed prior to trees reaching merchantable size, typically around 4.5 inches dbh (diameter at breast height measured at 4.5 ft. above the ground). The objective of a pre-commercial thinning is to release some trees in overstocked stands by reducing densities to prevent stagnation and increase the growth of the remaining trees. Many southern pine species regenerate by producing a great deal of seed, resulting in thousands of seedlings per acre. Loblolly pine, for example, can be a prolific seed producer under ideal conditions. Natural regeneration practices in even-aged systems through seed-tree or shelterwood methods often results in extreme overstocked conditions that, left untreated, can stagnate growth and lengthen rotation ages (Mann and Lohrey 1974). The decision to pre-commercially thin a stand is often difficult for many landowners because of the initial costs involved with implementing this treatment. However, allowing trees to continue growing in overstocked conditions will ultimately result in a stand of trees with small diameters and small crowns. Pine trees generally need about one-third of the total height in live crown to sustain effective growth rates over the span of the stand rotation.

    EVOLUTION OF SILVICULTURAL THINNING: FROM REJECTION TO TRANSCENDENCE Boris Zeide1 Abstract—Our views on a main tool of forestry, silvicultural thinning, have changed greatly since the beginning of forestry over 200 years ago. At first, thinning was rejected as something unnatural and destructive. It was believed that the densest stands were the most productive and any thinning only detracted from maximum growth produced by nature. This philosophy was still dominant during the second stage when the “fathers” of forestry developed the practice of light thinning from below. It took another 100 years to acknowledge the benefit of a less “natural” medium to heavy thinning. During the last 70 years, the consensus has been that, within a wide range of densities, stand growth remains more or less constant. Even better results can be achieved when density increases with age. Heavy thinning at the beginning speeds up growth, whereas higher stocking at the end secures a larger final harvest. The last stage takes the trend of progressively lighter thinning to its logical conclusion: to control density by planting only the trees we intend to harvest at the end of rotation. Wood quality and stem form can be improved by pruning. Specific management recommendations are provided. (Abhal) is an evergreen aromatic shrub with high therapeutic potential in human diseases. This plant is loaded with nutrition and is rich in aromatic oils and their concentration differ in different parts of the plant (berries, leaves, aerial parts, and root).     Dormant Tree (and Shrub) Pruning By Sue Gwise, Consumer Horticulture Educator & Master Gardener Coordinator If you need to prune any of your hardwood trees, late winter is the best time for this task. Even fruit trees like apple, pear, and peach should be pruned during the dormant season, which is basically February through early April, and prior to spring bud swell. The worst time to prune hardwood trees is during or soon after their initial growth flush. Unfortunately, this is the same time of year when most people begin their landscape chores. A prune at this point is very stressful to the tree. Dormant pruning is done for several reasons: 1. Fungi and insects are not active, and this eliminates the chance of disease and infestation. 2. Pruning done before bud swell in early spring will maximize growth. 3. It minimizes the chance of cold damage which is higher if pruning is done in early winter. 4. The tree will go into a full season of active growth in which pruning wounds will close-up much quicker. 5. There are no leaves, so it is much easier to see the tree structure. Like anything, there are exceptions. Crabapples, for example, tend to sucker profusely if pruned in the winter or early spring. As a result, species prone to suckering should be pruned in the summer. Things get trickier with ornamental flowering trees and shrubs. In these cases, the timing of pruning relates to the type of wood that develops flowers. In species where blooms occur on the current season’s growth (new wood), a dormant pruning is fine.

ABSTRACT: We describe an alternative approach to the traditional stand-density management diagrams and stocking guides for determining optimum commercial thinning prescriptions. Predictions from a stand-growth simulator are incorporated into multiple nomograms that graphically display postthinning responses of various financial and biological response variables (mean annual increment, piece size, final harvest cost, total wood cost, and net present value). A customized ArcView GIS computer interface (ThinME) displays multiple nomograms and serves as a tool for forest managers to balance a variety of competing objectives when developing commercial thinning prescriptions. ThinME provides a means to evaluate simultaneously three key questions about commercial thinning: (1) When should thinning occur?     Recipes Tips for Cooking with Juniper • Juniper berries can be used fresh and are commonly sold dried as well. • Add juniper berries to brines and dry rubs for turkey, pork, beef, and wild game. • Berries are typically crushed before added to marinades and sauces. Hunt Country Marinade ¾ cup Cabernet Sauvignon or other dry red wine 3 large garlic cloves, minced ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 3 2x1-inch strips orange peel (orange part only) 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 2x1-inch strips lemon peel (yellow part only) 2 tablespoons unsulfured (light) molasses 8 whole cloves 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 2 8 whole black peppercorns teaspoons dried 2 bay leaves, broken in half 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary or 2 ¾ teaspoon sa teaspoons dried 1 tablespoon crushed juniper berries or 2 tablespoons gin Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Cover; chill.) Marinate poultry 2 to 4 hours and meat 6 to 12 hours in refrigerator. Drain marinade into saucepan. Boil 1 minute. Pat meat or poultry dry.
