Community Group Directory – 2010

This is the third edition of the Parks Forum Directory. It includes brief descriptions of voluntary organisations that help look after many of the parks and other green spaces in Bristol. The groups listed are all members of the Bristol Parks Forum. Also listed are some of the organisations that work with these groups and assist them, for example, with advice or resources. Contact details are included to facilitate links between groups, these were correct at the time of printing in March 2010. There is also an online listing of groups on the Parks Forum website at www.bristolparksforum.org.uk that will be updated if new groups are formed or if contact details change. Our thanks to the groups, not just for sending in their information, but for the brilliant contribution that they make to the greening of Bristol.

This directory was produced by Bristol Parks and the Bristol Parks Forum. Bristol Parks Forum

Bristol Parks Forum (BPF) BPF is a network of individual community groups and organisations that are working to improve parks and green spaces or have an interest in them. It is supported by the council but acts independently and is currently the only “community voice” that is dedicated to all of Bristol’s green spaces. The Forum’s 3 main roles are to: • Offer an opportunity to share ideas and experience; • Act as a consultation body for the Bristol Parks service and other agencies; • Influence decision-making, including the allocation of resources. The forum meets four times a year, including an annual conference. You can sign up for regular BPF email updates with news about parks & green spaces in Bristol via the BPF website'. New parks groups and similar organisations with an interest in protecting and enhancing green and open space are always welcome.

Shirehampton Greens Shirehampton Greens is a small community group dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of open green space in Shirehampton. We have been active with Bristol City Council in the management of and particularly that part of the Nature Conservancy site known as the Daisy Field. We have campaigned locally to secure the riverside area known as Lamplighters Open Space from possible future development. This year we took part in BCC’s bid to Natural for Access to Nature funding. Lamplighters Marsh is one of seven proposed Wild City sites. We hope to deliver a range of events opening the Marsh to wider access as part of the Wild City project.

Henbury & Southmead - North Area (NP2)

Friends of Badock’s Wood The Badock’s Wood Local Nature Reserve is situated in north Bristol, between Southmead, Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym; it was formally designated as a LNR in January 2008. The area covers approximately 12 hectares and can be readily accessed from Lakewood Road and Doncaster Road. The Woods were given to the City by Sir Stanley Badock (a local industrialist) in 1937 and consist of a large grassed area and a beautiful wooded valley, with the River Trym in the valley floor. The woodland is at least 400 years old in parts and a Bronze Age burial mound (tumulus) gives added interest to the site. The Friends of Badock’s Wood is an enthusiastic local amenity group who provide a focus for local residents with an interest in protecting and enhancing the woods – this includes workdays and community events. In 2005 and 2007, Wild Flower Meadows were sown in order to enhance the appearance of the grassland area, which had previously been a site for 81 prefabs that were demolished in 1979/82. Tarmaced paths throughout the majority of the site provide good access and are wheelchair friendly.

Friends of Stoke Lodge Stoke Lodge is a beautiful and important historic landscape forming the grounds of a listed building in Stoke Bishop. Magnificent specimen trees are carefully spaced throughout the parkland/playing fields to allow them to reach their mature shapes and to be properly admired. The BBC’s first live “Spring Watch” series filmed with Bill Oddie, Kate Humble and Simon King (then called “Wild in Your Garden”) was based at Stoke Lodge. The program said that its open parkland and surrounding properties form one of the best residential areas for wildlife in the nation. It is well loved by locals but also used by teams from further away who have lost their playing fields to development. The Area Green Space Strategy has highlighted the locality’s lack of public open space. The aims of Friends of Stoke Lodge are to preserve Stoke Lodge Parkland/Playing Fields for future generations for sports and casual recreation and to retain its trees, its open aspect, its grass sports pitches, its wildlife and its undoubted beauty.

Friends of the Avon New Cut The Avon New Cut is a tidal waterway running through the centre of Bristol. Excavated between 1804 and 1809, it was an essential part of the development of Bristol’s Floating Harbour. The Cut is still vitally important to the function of the City Docks and the surrounding area for drainage. It is now an area rich in flora and fauna – a green lung in the centre of the city. The Friends of the Avon New Cut (FrANC) is a group of local residents who are promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of the Cut - including its history, wildlife, bridges, bankside buildings and its role in making Bristol work. We run guided walks and events, organise riverbank clean-up sessions, publish regular newsletters and have produced a book and a wildlife leaflet. FrANC was founded in 2004. Membership is free.

Kingfisher Group The Kingfisher Group was formed in 2004 by residents living in Windmill Hill who are interested in caring for and improving our local green spaces. We took the name ‘Kingfisher’ because of our desire to once again see kingfishers along the Malago River that runs through our area. We look after the banks of the Malago (where it runs through Malago Vale), the Cotswold Road green and the St. John’s Burial Ground. In addition to organising

Northern Slopes Initiative The Northern Slopes are three linked areas of public open space, located between the north of and the southern edge of Bedminster/Windmill Hill. The slopes are made up of undulating, steep terrain and escarpment, with a mixture of semi-improved grassland, woodland and scrub. They are used by local people for getting around, dog walking, cycling, informal play, watching wildlife, and for admiring spectacular views across Bristol. The Northern Slopes Initiative is a group of people seeking to maintain, conserve and enhance the Northern Slopes. Originally set up to protect the areas from housing development, the Group has expanded its work to encourage others to join with them to work for the benefit of the people and communities that live around the Slopes; and the features that make the Slopes what they are.
